The Road Films: Bing Crosby and Bob Hope

At the age of 37, Bing Crosby had 24 films behind him and his Hollywood career was at a crossroads. He found the perfect comedic partner in Bob Hope, with whom he had first performed on stage in 1932. Starting in 1940, Hope and Crosby would star in seven "Road" films. This film excerpt from American Masters: Bing Crosby Rediscovered is rich in archival footage of interviews and film.

The only comic that could compare with Bob Hope was Robin Williams.Hope could make you laugh with a look,a joke,in a movie,on TV, at a nightclub or in the middle of a warzone.A genius.

One son out of seven children wrote a book that was partly critical of his upbringing. He was interviewed years later and his responses were interesting. I've also read that he apologised to the family about this years later. The book was more a self critique about his own life. The other three sons gave defensive quotes about their father after the books release. Gary had definite reason to complain about aspects of his childhood but some of the book has been queried. He loved his boys but had trouble expressing it, but read about the amount of worry and help he gave to his sons over the years. The boys actually said some lovely things about their father.

The problem in the family was not Bing, but the boys alcoholic mom (and Bings wife, of course), Dixie.
