Enjoy! Check out the (non-monetised) music video version here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/prlkmKZjz8uYp6s.html There was a weird glitch in this mission where one of the tanks (one of the silver ones attached to the re-entry capsule) wasn't being used by the engine and wasn't draining. I don't know why this occurred, but manually draining the fuel into another tank and then pumping it back in (therefore leaving me with a net result of no actual transfer) fixed the issue and the engine could use it. Really strange. That's why my DeltaV total increases at 16:14 despite the fuel levels remaining unchanged, I just pumped the fuel out and back in.

The smaller the ship is the more maneuverable it gets, so reaction wheels will be sufficient. RCS is useful only with bigger ships. Do a simple experiment if you have a rotating chair, sit on it, make it turn and try playing with your arms by outstreching them and folding them back, you'll notice your speed will change. The farther your extremities are from your center of gravity, the slower you'll rotate. In short, the more compact you are the better to gain maneuverability. Same with space ships, even small part ships with lots of long and heavy extremities will be a pain to rotate than a compact ship with same mass. So with small ships able to rotate quickly all you need is an engine, (tweak the thrust setting so not to overburn) and good sense of spatial movement. Burn one way, rotate 180 degrees, burn the other way to cancel the speed and then, turn 90 degrees to face target, burn to get closer at slow speed and the docking port magnet will do the rest.

In science yes, but in general public communication, weight is also used; which is not really accurate, but most people don't make the difference between mass and weight, just because our measurement units were chosen here on Earth where wieght and mass are identical. Because the weighter is on Earth, so the result you get is your mass according to Earth's gravity. Put the same device on Mars, the result will obviously be different, design on other measure instrument tuned to Mars' gravity with units chosen in function the environment, you'll have the same results that on Earth and in absolute, both results remain different. Same kind of problems people had in the same country before the metric system. Kilos and grams and pounds didn't measure the same amount from one town to another, just because the tuning was different and the reference object was different.

Beginning of the video Matt: "This has a lot of delta v anyway so I chose i slightly less efficient efficient Terrier for the TWR. I'm not being too efficient in my burns here." End of the video Matt: "You can see that we have to do a lot of budgeting here. Just 590 m/s of delta v left to get to Kerbin." Me: (Insert fancy voicover) "We are observing the rare Matt performing it's daily routine in it's natural habitat of the Kerbol System. At the (almost) top of the food chain, he dominates the Kerbol system. His only fear is a vicious monster, the KRAKEN, and like dark matter, no one has ever seen it, only it's effects are observed. However, this particular Matt seems to deal with the creature very well. But he seems to have an odd habit of being liberal with 'delta v', thus going easy on those who watch and attempt to recreate his actions. As a result, he makes mistakes which take a hilarious turn and give a good laugh to anyone watching."(End Fancy Voiceover)
@Crimsonedge1

Terrier is second most efficient after Poodle. ISP 345s. Only the poodle beats it at 350s but that's 2.5m size. Well, the NERV has 800s but still. The other engine used is the spark but that only has 315s so the terrier isn't less efficient.

Sy W In what context are you saying this?
@Supadubya
@Supadubya 6 жыл бұрын
Sy W if the heavier engine pushes the fuel-fraction down by enough then a light, lower-ISP engine actually results in more Delta-V (especially if the mass saved on the lighter engine is added as additional full fuel tanks). Matt was almost certainly looking at Kerbal Engineer readouts to design these craft, so you'll have to take his word on this (and mine, from experience- with a craft this light, a 909 would provide more Delta-V)

Props for using a real pod. I've been frustrated recently because so many KSP videos are just going somewhere in a command seat in a service bay. I recently started playing with life support mods (very much the opposite extreme in terms of design complexity). Life support has been a very rewarding challenge not because you have to remember to bring enough supplies etc, but because it's forcing me to design much larger and more complex vessels to support all of the life support hardware. I'm going to end up building some really cool stuff in order to go interplanetary that I wouldn't have built otherwise. Coming from that perspective, when I see all of these chair videos now I find myself thinking "but... you have no payload". Obviously playing with life support is not for everyone, but it's nice to see someone at least making a point of not unnecessarily doing the most minimalist thing humanly possible.

Burn at a 45° angle upwards when you get closer to the ground. That'll keep your altitude up but continue to burn off horizonal speed. Once your horizonal speed gets very low (10mps-ish) you'll just start falling straight down and can land that way. I know this is a really old post, but I hope this helps.

One question: Why did you put the tiny fuel tanks on the nose of the command pod rather than have a few of the ring-tanks on the bottom instead? It would have made your splashdown speed a bit lower. If you're interested in requests, I wouldn't mind seeing a 'pimped out' (no mass restriction) version of this mission with some science equipment and data relays. With some minor tweaks of the tanks, you could probably do a bit more with this basic concept; it would likely be suitable for Dres and maybe even Vall (whilst being fantastically excessive for Minmus).

Disabling the tanks individually was an idea I put in chat during the livestream but I guess you didn't see it lol

How do you get your docking ports to snap together soo nicely almost every time i try even if im 98% direct on, the other craft almost always goes into a spin from the bounce of docking

why didnt you use the fuel in the lander to do the ike burn? like, flip the craft and use the engine from the lander to do the burn and then flip around again to finish

That's what I was thinking. Either that or tell the docking ports to transfer fuel and make the lander the highest priority. Then eject the lander.

Awesome video! I have a question about your transfer at 9:28 - how is it so quick? (~75 days) I can never get my transfer under ~150 days.
