Sean Connery in The Rock is James Bond - and I can prove it. On the 25th anniversary of Michael Bay’s 1996 action classic The Rock, starring Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage, this video essay looks at the evidence in WAY too much detail to definitively prove once and for all that Sean Connery’s character in The Rock is James Bond 007.
This video essay doesn’t just look at the surface level similarities between The Rock/James Bond. It relies on information from all six of the Connery Eon Bond movies (Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever) and from actual world history, as well as the backstory of Sean Connery’s The Rock character John Mason (who is 100% James Bond).
By the end of this video I guarantee that you’ll either agree with me, or you’ll wonder why you spent twenty minutes of your life watching a cartoon penguin talking about movies.

The only time they "officially" rebooted it onscreen was Casino Royale. So for example Roger Moore laying flowers on Tracy's grave could be a reference to Moore's Bond's offscreen backstory, but also doubles as an easter egg for fans of OHMSS. So the different actors are all playing the same character of James Bond, just different versions of him in different timelines (like how we have had lots of Bruce Waynes and Peter Parkers). The existence of recurring actors like M, Q, and Moneypenny don't change this because they never reference events of previous films. So this theory just looks at the continuity of Connery's Bond.

'never reference events of previous films'...you literally just mentioned a reference to the previous films they had with Moore's Bond visiting the grave of his wife Tracey. The references to his wife are one of the recurring bits of continuity in the Bond series pre-Craig reboot, that helped establish it was continuing with the same character.

@@jeffreyrigged The DB5 isn't so much a reference to an event as it was iconography. They've never reference any actual events with the car. (And the appearance of Spectre in Spectre the film doesnt line up at all with the 60s films.) With Tracey on the other hand that is an actual event that happened- the wedding and her death. And in For Your Eyes Only they very clearly show the date of her death as well...so its not quite the same thing I feel.

There are way to many things that line up in this film to be coincidence. Some of the incredible details could have come from Sean Connery himself. I saw an interview with Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay that took place right after the movie was made, and they said they had to work Connery hard to get him to agree to the part, AND that Connery was very involved in the script re-writes. Who is to say that this may have been a swan song of sorts for Sean Connery's last Bond Film? Additionally, both Bruckheimer and Bay have denied that the Film was indeed about Bond. However, it could not be included in the Cannon of Bond Films because it was not produced by the Film company that owns the James Bond Franchise, so legally, they had to deny it. I would have liked to have heard Sean Connery's take on it, and I have seen some interviews with him right after the "Rock" was released, but never heard him mention the "Bond" correlation.

@@geeebuttersnap2433 Not really. The pre-production of this film is quite well know now a days and this film went through a lot of changes as it went on. It was originally a 'spec' script that was picked up and then worked upon [Bond doesn't really look at spec scripts as they use a stable of writers then bring in guests for a polish] and other people were in mind for the roles before Connery and Cage were cast [I've heard Arnold Schwarznegger was offered Cage's role for example] rather than any actor in particular so any Bond in jokes were added during the writing process after Connery's casting [and the plot doesn't resemble a Bond film much anyway, more a 'Die Hard on an X' type of film and one of the best examples]. The production was quite troubled with Micheal Bay almost replaced at one stage so the script was probably altering when filming [as is the case in most films]. The Seagal film 'Half Past Dead' was also written around this time and was actually called 'The Rock' but shelved as the script was deemed to close to this film until the early 2000's.

The 1981 Clive Cussler novel 'Night Probe' features as a supporting character what is very probably an aging James Bond but he is using the codename 'Brian Shaw'. @@geeebuttersnap2433 A good example of how things often work on films is Last Action hero which was a spec script bought by the studio. When Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast, the spec script was largly ignored [so those writters only got a story credit] and the writers credited for 'screenplay' on the final film were hired. However, Shane Black [one of those writers] says his work was heavily revised by several others so the film doesn't resemble his script very much.

@@sigmahyperion955 Technically he's not, although Bond was a Royal Navy Commander he's supposed to have joined the SAS (both in The Rock and Bond), the SAS is the army branch of UKSF, a member of the Royal Navy would normally join the SBS but it is technically possible for anyone to jump from any branch into one of the other UKSF teams (although I doubt the SBS take anyone that isn't Royal Navy). So at this point the last UK military job Bond had was soldier.
@TheLAGopher
@TheLAGopher 2 жыл бұрын
@@carlberry5494 It could have worked like this. Bond started out in the Royal Navy as a submarine officer and rose to the rank of Lt. Commander where he would rate being called "Commander" for everyday military use outside an official function such as certain ceremonies and proceedings where his full fank of Lt. Commander would be used. It's the same concept behind why Hummell who is a one-star Brigadier General is simply addressed as General which formally is a 4-star rank but can be applied to those General officers of lesser grade. Bond then joins the SAS which is open to applicants from across the UK armed forces. While Royal Navy and Marines typically gravitated towards the SBS, there was no official ban on officers and men from those services joining the SAS. Since the SAS is an Army unit, Bond would have to hold an Army rank on a temporary basis while a member of the SAS. It was also customary for officers and men in the SAS to hold a reduced rank upon joining the SAS Regiment because people of lower rank in that unit held the responsibilities they would have at a higher rank elsewhere because of the experience level in the SAS being so much higher than the regular UK armed forces. Since Bond was a Lt. Commander in the "regular" Royal Navy, his Army equivalent rank would Major, and a one rank reduction to hold a SAS billet would be to that of an Army Captain. It would have been from the ranks of the SAS that Bond was recruited into MI-6. Since SAS service is looked upon as a special assignment. Once recruited into MI-6, Bond's military service of origin and the rank he held there would revert to that of a Lt. Commander in the Royal Navy. Since MI-6 is British Military Intelligence, he would still be considered on active duty status with the RN but on a different Special assignment. That is why Bond could continue a career in the Navy as he worked in the 00 section at MI-6, and even be promoted to a full RN Commander by the time of his faked "death" in You Only Live Twice. We saw this play out in the Craig Bond films where Vesper refers to Bond being recruited to MI-6 out of the SAS in Casino Royale, but after Bond's "death" in Skyfall, M is writing his obituary referring to Bond being a Commander in the Royal Navy at the time of his death.

One small additional thing you may have missed - the Fairmont Hotel (the hotel where Mason gets a haircut) is on Mason Street in San Francisco. Bond probably liked staying at the hotel in his earlier life and picked Mason as his fake name for that reason.

The story is simple yet enjoyable, The Villain's motives are reasonable enough to see why he did it, And the fact this works as Sean Connery's last James Bond film is brilliant. In my headcanon, this is the very last James Bond film for Sean Connery. Truly delights me

Being a huge Bond fan from the 80's, I had to throw my 2 cents in. It's said in 1959, the 23rd regiment SAS was renamed the Reserve Reconnaissance Unit. With a specialty in escape and evasion. If Bond was assigned to a military intelligence unit after the SAS, it would make sense. A commander in the British Navy is 2 ranks up from a captain in the army. It's possible that Bond transferred to the Navy, he had a rank increase. After a couple years, he had another rank increase to Commander. The reason he told Hubble he was a captain in the army is because it was the last rank he had as a soldier. And he wanted to address Hubble as one soldier to another since his other 2 ranks were as a spy. And spies lie for a living. So in his attempt to speak equally to Hubble, Bond used his last rank as an actual soldier to create equals. And for that rank, Bond would still be in the SAS for that rank. So that's why he used his REAL military rank and service to Hubble.

Most importantly, he revealed to Godspeed that he was trained by none other than the British Intelligence. And ever since the inception of the franchise, Bond has operated under pseudonyms, be it Peter Franks(DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER), James St. John Smyte(A VIEW TO A KILL), Van Biguel(DIE ANOTHER DAY), Arlington Beech(CASINO ROYALE). John Mason was just another of them, and fit quite accurately in Connery's saga.

For example- the missile launch in Dr. No, what is shown is a Titan 1, which was not launched from Canaveral after late summer or early fall of 1960. Most the rest of the evidence shown is pretty circumstantial, I'm afraid. Bond was a jet setter, and every other British Intelligence officer like him would have been as well, they would have been in HK and SF multiple times per year.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was intentional, all the writers would have to do is write a loose script based off of Bond’s exploits, and then fact check the dates and events of Bond’s timeline, and adjust the script to fit them, and leave it at that. Don’t allude to anything else, just adjust dates and times of certain plot points and worst case you have a decently developed character, best case your audience puts the pieces together and discover a whole new meaning to your movie and you become a cult classic for very minimal effort.

Especially considering that it was by Michael Bay, who got a bad rep as a filmmaker at the turn of the millennium. The key to the film are the three main characters: Mason, Hummel, & Goodspeed. All three could've carried their own movies, but instead we got a crossover of their stories that elevates the concept from being just another Die Hard knockoff.

Biggest clue against the theory is that James Bond was Royal Navy. Not SAS (Army). Hummel called him 'Sailor' because he was with a team of Navy SEALs, and was in Navy Gear.

Part of the intelligence business is creating fake aliases and affiliations. When Bond was first captured and profiled, he sought to avoid MI:6 the embarrassment of his arrest and gave a testimony that he was a part of the SAS rather than the RNVR. He escaped and not long after, Alcatraz was officially closed. When he was captured again a decade later having stolen the microfilm, he resorted to maintaining the identity he gave at Alcatraz.

Him being SAS under his cover identity disproves nothing. In fact, the clear discomfort that Mason showcases for a second after Hummel refers to him as a sailor makes no sense if Mason had no relation to the Navy.

If he had been a younger guy in a Navy uniform, yeah. But when you seen a guy in his 70s dressed in that gear, your reaction is more likely "who is this guy?" and assume he just hitched a ride with the Navy guys they had just encountered. If he didn't recognize him, he might assume he a chemical weapons expert that tagged along to help with the proper handling of the VX gas. But when you see this older guy and wonder "who is this?" until he gets within arms reach, you have a clear view of him, and it occurs to you that you recognize this guy, that is when the "testing" type of questions come out.
@daredemontriple6
@daredemontriple6 2 жыл бұрын
@@SkylerKing I agree. The most convincing part is the reaction. The entire film Connery's character is portrayed as being a hardened veteran, fearless. The kind of man who's been on the wrong end of a gun so many times he probably feels more uncomfortable when he's not got one pointing at him. And yet, with that one simple - and to any other military man, routine - question, he is taken aback. If only for a moment, he has to think and question what this guy really knows, before doubling down on his false identity. It's not about what prompted the question, or the choice of Sailor over Soldier, it's about the reaction. Name and rank is standard procedure when taking in a prisoner of war, all combat personnel know this. In-fact the only odd part is that he didn't also ask for a serial number. That's besides the point though, which is that to any other man/woman in the forces that question is just as unremarkable as "What time is it?" or "How are you doing?", and the reaction would be an almost robotic response thanks to years of military routine. The only reason why this question would challenge Connery's character is because the man asking it already knows the answer. Because he's not really asking him for his name and rank, he's telling him "I know who you are"

The English comedy writers, Ian La Frenais & Dick Clement ( Likely Lads and Porridge ) were called in by Connery to rewrite bits of the script, fleshing out the character of John Mason and adding the quips and one liners said by Connery, certainly got their inspiration from Connery's previous incarnation as James Bond ...

Excellent video…I’ve always fully believed that the script for The Rock began its life as a pitch for one final Connery Bond film… Considering Sean Connery kicked off a career renaissance when he won the academy award for best supporting actor in The Untouchables…Makes complete sense that someone, somewhere had the thought that it would be a good idea to revisit Connery’s Bond and give the character a proper send off… This idea was attempted with Never Say Never Again but was a legal nightmare at the time…This was only a little over a decade since that all played out…I mean there was void in the Bond where they had a gap after the critical failure of License to Kill in 1989, coincidentally right at the same time Sean Connery’s career resurgence began… ION likely eventually passed on the idea because they were looking to reset the series and update it for a 90’s audience, which they did with Brosnan in Goldeneye…Rather than scrap The Rock as a Bond film, or force it through (Like what happened with Never Say Never Again), Bruckheimer et al just lightly retooled the script for a character named John Mason and here we are talking about it today…
