Still one of the greatest short stories ever written. Lawrence was at the peak of his artistic power. This is essentially a symbolist piece, an extended metaphor for the psycho-sexual and emotional toll of capital -- I'm hard-pressed to think of a more powerful example in literature. "There MUST be more money!" If the frantic solitary rocking reminds you of something ... you're onto it.

This is like some teenagers taking drugs and suffering addiction in exchange for psychological pleasure :(

@@chungyanwong7293Can’t you just enjoy a made up story for what it is, a story. That is what theatre is,stories. ET, Dracula, Frankenstein and Star Wars, etc. Television, Cinema is all about fantasising creating stories and now we have game shows! If is all made up! It is not supposed to be real.

One of my youngest TV memories is seeing someone on a rocking horse which seemed to be moving by itself at speed. It terrified me. I've been trying to discover for years what it was and finally I've found it

The 1949 film was far better. It was an hour longer and allowed much more understanding of the characters. Kenneth More was just wasted here, and Bassett was almost a non-character compared to the one played by John Mills in the original film. The uncle and gardener were supposed to be sympathetic and well-meaning to the boy, but here it seemed they just wanted to exploit him to make money. All the background in the story about the mother and father were missing. (The father was a gambler and the mother insisted on living beyond their means to advance the social ladder.).

It is better since it is more realistic. No one gave a shit about the boy

Is this about child abuse?

No, just ordinary English upper class child rearing of the time.

The rocking horse is an F.H Ayres ''D'' Type, the right period for the film, being made in the 1930's.

The setting of Lawrence's story was the 1920s. (Basset was lame because of wounds in the Great War). In this 1977 version, the setting was meant to be "modern" (1970s), as can be seen from the cars.
