For our latest adventure on the Don't be a Tourist in Paris web series, we go 30 feet beneath the city to discover the subculture of iconic midnight movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show just in time for Halloween.
Below ground, we're in the subterranean cinema of Alexander J E Bradley a photographer, filmmaker and catacomb dweller (aka. cataphile)
Movie screenings in the catacombs are strictly not open to the public (or legal), but Bradley does host Paris tours and photography workshops: : www.alexanderj...
Above ground, we're at Studio Galande, the petite Parisian picture house that's been showing the cult film twice a week in its original language, alongside the theatre’s resident troupe of performers for 40 years.
It's Rocky Horror à la Parisienne....

Recall seeing this at midnight when I was 18. A very surprising experience. Another film exploring a subculture is ‘Paris is Burning’ (which is about New York, not Paris)

I love watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show. There were outdoor viewings at my college in the late nineties! So much fun.

Saw RHPS in “78” at midnite. It was already a cult classic and it was the first time I saw people dressing in costumery for a movie. It was fabulous. The Glam -Rock - Opera style music is very enjoyable, even today. Tim Curry is the best 🖤

This is so fascinating. How did he manage to map the catacombs? So much of it must be in dim light and permanently closed off. I don't know how you'd manage to get to know it so well and then construct an amphitheatre without getting caught. This is so amazing; I'm so jealous ☺

Ok Ms. Nessy, so what is the Rocky Horror Picture Show about? Is it about letting the public, who are different, feel normal and know that they are normal? Honestly, I never seen it either. I never was a Queen fan, but I heard he was amazing in the movie.

@@jridsy All I can guess is that Queen was still doing rock -opera music at that time, as did Pink Floyd. But I think the first to really get the whole gothic-rock-opera craze going was Alice Cooper. His performances were really quite stunning! 🦇I see some influences in Rocky Horror from AC. I think this is because listening to FM radio was still fairly new and because of the new format of very little commercials Radio stations used to play a whole album on air so it could be taped by the listener. There were no commercials during the album being played, ahhhhh. So bands started making albums that told a story as a whole instead of just individual commercially popular songs lumped together.
