The Roddenberry Archive presents an in-depth two-part conversation with award-winning science fiction novelist and screenwriter David Gerrold. During the conversation, Mr. Gerrold tells how, as a college student he broke into the television industry by writing a script for the original Star Trek, the classic episode, "Trouble With Tribbles.". Mr. Gerrold speaks candidly of his sometimes-tumultuous relationship with Star Trek's creator, the late Gene Roddenberry. He delves into his personal experiences in the making of the legendary series and of his pivotal role in the development of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

I’vee been a Trek fan since I was in elementary school and have read and watched many interviews with David but have never seen him open up like this. Bravo and thank you, @OTOY, for sharing this with us.

I never knew he was in a relationship with Steven Parent. It has been known DG was gay, but I don't recall him talking about it in public, other than in passing in the "Chaos on the Bridge" documentary. I had heard Gerrold had testified at the Manson trial. Just awful. That poor kid, Parent. Wrong place, wrong time. DG's approach to remembering Steve is wonderful. DG is a good man for adopting and accepting the challenge of raising a child as a single parent.

Wonderful to hear David open up like this. To share such personal feeling is never easy, but it's worth it, because you know others might benefit from knowing....Very courageous.

Freiberger did the second season of Space 1999 and killed it as well. He drastically retooled the show without any dramatic explanation. We just had to lump it. Part of the retooling was to introduce an alien science officer. Now where have we seen one of those? 🤔🤔 In the first season they always managed cope with the challenges that came their way. In season 2 there was an over reliance on the science officer's shape shifting ability to save the day. It was Anderson's first live action show to get a second season and he destroyed it.

Fred Freiberger also produced Six Million Dollar Man at the end.

And Space:1999, (which he killed), and a couple of other shows which failed. There's a reason why he has The Freiberger Effect named after him.

Many serious SF writers stopped submitting after season 1 and the Ellison affair. Many of the S2 scripts of famous freelance writers had been submitted in S1 In fall of 1966, GR took his friend Ellison off his 3rd rewrite to start a letter writing campaign to the WGA colleagues to save Star Trek from being cancelled mid season. He did that without pay in an office on the studio lot. Ellison was paid $3000 for the script 1st draft and one polish. Those were the WGA rules and he was a big union guy. They said it was too hard to film and too long, yet wanted scenes added about what was happening on the alternate timeline Starship. This made it even longer and more expensive. Then they said cut all that out and cut out the drug dealer situation alltogether. In the midst of his 3rd unpaid draft he told them to stick it. However Norway Corp/Desilu had promised NBC an Ellison episode in Spring of 67....so they cajoled him to not insist on using the pen name Cornwainer Bird (that was his option in the contract)....then got Fontana to make it fit the current Star Trek situation format. Remember, all Ellison knew about Star Trek when he wrote his 1st draft was what he saw in WNMHGB. His script fit that situation and bookends the conclusion of WNMHGB Kirk/Spock character arc.

Speaking of the "haves vs. the have nots", now the "haves" tell us we will "own nothing and be happy". The "stakeholders" (as they call themselves) tell us they will own everything and we will have a "life by subscription" rented from them, where we cannot build any wealth for ourselves. That's not exactly what I call a better vision of the future. It's not very egalitarian. People need to have ownership of at least some part of their lives.

Where does he get off saying Roddenberry was wrong, about anything?
@crownprincesebastianjohano7069
@crownprincesebastianjohano7069 5 ай бұрын
Probably because Roddenberry was wrong about a lot of things. The first season of TNG is a remarkable demonstration of that. But, hey, no one's perfect.

Coon spent a lot of time running mistress interference and getting rid of starlettes that could derail the production due to GRs wreckless libido. The description of Coon by Justman and Solow reminds me of the character Nixon in "Hail Caesar"....a talented executive that could get brilliance to the screen but had to deal with a mine field of stupidity and egotism.
