@@catchaser52 I understand Enterprise improved considerably after season 2-3. I actually do like some individual episodes. However I will be blunt in saying that its thinly-veiled apologism for the Iraq War was a dramatic turn off and nothing in line with Star Trek's traditional sort of humanitarian/xenotarian ethos. The acting in the early seasons was very rough, and Scott Bakula as lovely as a man I am sure he is and no matter how wonderful he was in Quantum Leap (which I watched and enjoyed) was not the right choice as captain. I never got around to watching the whole thing and I may do so one day. But I know already based on following the story lines that it will never hold the same special place that the Bermantrek era offered us in terms of the grandeur, beauty, and moral sensibilities that were still well championed from Gene's influence. For me everything since then has been a complete wash until season 3 Picard. The poor lighting alone, then the tonal darkness, and indulgence in griminess and moral dregdery is just amazingly unappealing.

@@danivarius I do not disregard the Enterprise E. it was in First Contact and even though it was really beat up at least they didn't just decide to try and trash it at the end of the movie. The Enterprise D is a masterpiece. It is the best looking spaceship of all time bar none.

Wonderful stuff! And Andy Probert is a genuinely great guy. I was once at a champagne afterparty for a non-Trek convention that he was attending. I'd spoken to him at the convention earlier in the day when things had hit a bit of a lull and said "I don't think it really needs to be said, but the Enterprise-D is one of the greatest designs ever to grace the screen." He replied, "Oh well thank you, and I think it does need to be said, because I've always worried that it looks like a fat whale!" At the end of the party he was hitting the road, he came across the room, taps me on the shoulder and says "Okay Andrew, I'm leaving now, it was great to meet you!" I've never forgotten that, he'd never met me before, but he took some extra time after a long tiring day to come and say goodbye. Not just a legendary designer, but an absolutely lovely human being too :)

Do you always get along with your spouse? How about siblings and parents? No you don’t and if you say yes to getting along I’ll call b.s., simple fact is being locked up in a confined area with the same people day after day you won’t always get along. You’ll fight its human nature and to remove that you remove independent thought and will. Don’t get me wrong it’s a wonderful idea, just not an interesting one.

That is something pretty much no other sci fi production has ever managed. All at the behest of Roddenberry's vision. Hope, respect, logic, communication, cooperation, harmony. Throughout everything. One of about 30 times I teared up during Season 3. For the first couple of episodes, I thought, gee it's odd they didn't use AI or just write the script so that prerecorded lines from Majel would be the voice of the Titan computer, since it was the old cast and nostalgia was a major theme. But the way they did it, bringing her back with the Enterprise D as an absolute masterstroke of nostalgia, was so much better, and well worth the wait. It was amazing.

They had TOS and TNG sounds all over the series - the transporters, the sensors, the cloaking device, the intercom whistle, etc. So in the first few episodes I was kind of bummed that none of the computers were Majel Baretts voice. And then, the E-D spoke up. Brought a tear to my eye, it did.

When they were having Star Trek conventions back in the 90s. I never had a chance to meet any of the cast members. But what I did end up doing was that I meet and had a conversation with Majel Barrett. There was a Star Trek convention in Nashville Tennessee and we had a short conversation about her standing in for Marina Sirtis who could not make it at the last minute. She was a wonderful woman and I enjoy talking to her briefly. Also I am proud to say that when Paramount opened up Star Trek the experience in Las Vegas in the back of the Las Vegas Hilton back in the 90s. I had a opportunity to do some role-playing on the actual Bridge of the enterprise-d. I visited that bridge three times. I stood behind the weapons console were Lieutenant Worf stood the first and second visits. The third visit. I stood at the engineering station that Geordi laforge used on the show. When no one was looking I reached out and touched the console. On TV the bridge looks very big but in person it is quite small probably because it was a totally closed in set. What I thought was really cool was while we were standing there as a small group trapped in the future on board the Enterprise in the roll playing. There were actual actors playing the roles of bridge personnel they will come in and out of the turbolift just like on the show. I even had a chance to walk through the Halls corridors of the ship after we left the transporter room at the start haven been beamed aboard the enterprise-d. Luckily there are videos on KZfaq that you can watch from all those years ago. I am proud to say that I have stood on the bridge of the Enterprise-D.

This is amazing on so many levels. It took a year for Star Trek to come to Australia. Since Sept 67, I'd been a fan. Flash forward 20 years. Thanks to my contact with Gene's archivist Richard Arnold, in May 87 before filming began, I was able to stand on that newly completed bridge. Like most Star Trek fans, I didn't know what to expect from this new iteration but, walking on that bridge, I was sold. It was almost a religious experience. The icing on this particular cake was meeting Gene, Bob Justman & Dorothy Fontana that day. Coming full circle, when Picard said he missed "the carpet", I had to laugh... I have two bridge carpet swatches from the original D in my very modest collection. Thank you to all involved in the D's virtual re-creation and physical re-creation of the bridge. When the Next Gen crew walked thru that door, I got the same goosebumps as when I did the same. And hearing Majel's voice... I was home.

I don't understand why people insist that this is "boring". I never found it boring. I found it comforting. The TNG crew feels like a family. They respect each other. Everyone has their specialities. They have different perspectives, different knowledge. In the end, the captain has to make the decision. That's where the tension comes from. That's probably harder to write than just having people be in direct conflict with each other. But that's what I've enjoyed.

I loved hearing the story of how The Next Generation came into being all those years ago. And, best of all, it’s from the people who actually were there, doing the creating. So good for my soul.

Gene Roddenberry. People will say what they like. But he was a man who was ahead of his time. He was also a flawed man with deep contradictions. However he succeeded not once... but twice. I think it says something that he tried several times to do more Star Trek but he gave us six movies. One of which he had a direct hand in writing himself, and two television series. By far and large he was a success. Despite his flaws.

Great mini documentary on the original Next Generation series, but even in this it is evident how much new Trek is not Gene's vision it is not what he would have wanted for his series.

I will always love Star Trek and Gene for bringing so much love over the years from TOS to Ent and the movies. It’s why I’m so protective of it and disliking of current Trek, save for Picard S3. I’ll also say Trek didn’t really take off till after Gene was pushed out, and that is what saved Trek.

Thanks Gene, you vision lives on. You blokes, theres a photo round of a bloke vacummin the set. He'd know alot about the layout too. Don't forget him. Whats happening with Chief Miles and his Mrs. Keiko O'Brien and Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher?

Huh,... good eye. I think what you're referring to was a small opening at the bottom of the under-rear cut-out. If so, that was the open housing for the aft TractorBeam Emitter.

God I missed this bridge so much. The lighting and aesthetic screams optimism. So many of us grew up with it, in it's corridors... Keep the lights up. The D can certainly kick butt still and we definately need what it stands for. I am genuinely tired of dark bridges. And if the bridge crew is okay to go on, don't let the game end.

I've never understood the hate for the E. It's long, slender, sleek and athletic. Many things the D was not. But attractive in its own right. I suppose it's just hard to follow up near-perfection. But, yea, I love both.
