An awesome review. Thanks a ton Harris. The 2 devices seem quite solid for content creation. What's your take on these 2, especially the Mackie (as the "audio interface and processor"), in terms of "low budget" audio & music production? At times doing live streaming & podcasting too. Would these work well for audio/music production? Or would say such would be better done supported by something like the Midas MR18 Digital Mixer (albeit the MR18 would likely be a less favorable choice from the perspective of Live Streaming and Podcasting). Thanks again for this great review and your content over the years.

Got my Mackie working with Linux, by going out with balance leads to my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, then USB out to my PC. No longer need Windows to load up settings for GOXLR. Never before has my voice ever sounded so clean. I'm a musician too, though have not plugged in my 1956 Hofner President into this as of yet, or my Gretsch. The problem with a lot of these mixers is they rely on Windows software, but Mackie has it all built in, plus the benefit of having an off switch and knowing that your settings are remembered is a must. Screen is perfect too. I do my own show for work on WhatsApp, though the 16mb limit of sound file upload, only leaves total minutes of 40 minutes, using open source sound converter mixing output to very low quality, but the Variable Bitrate to best quality, resample to 11KHz and the sound is still good enough.

Biggest issue with the Elgato ecosystem; that software is not just helpful, it's required to make everything work because the mics and the capture cards misreport their hardware.

I think half the reason I watch these videos is because I remember working in the theatre in the days before any of this technology, when MiniDisc (rewritable like tapes, crisp like CDs) was a massive QoL improvement for us and laying 100 yards of multicore XLR was the only reliable way to get sound from one side of a room to the other. The first time I saw a sound-tech using a laptop, we all crowded around to learn what this sorcery was. Even if I have no current use for mixers like these, I love to see how accessible everything is getting and how much control they give to professionals.

I’m using all the new RØDE gear rcp2, duo and the streamer X. All good and work perfectly for my purposes. I especially like dual USB ports since I bring in secondary audio into my stream or while I’m working, I can bring in audio / through remote sharing to my second MacBook Pro m2 and not have it go out to my main stream. I have it on my third 4k monitor up in to a small part of the corner. Little hard to explain in works vs visually 😎

If I knew RCP2 only has 3 channels and in order to have them I need to plugin both of the type-c cables, I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. And I don't think they are giving more virtual channels to RCP2. That's why they released SteamerX or whatever it's called. Everything we need is in that device.

Sorry for the long question but hopefully you can help I'm currently using the Rodecaster Pro 2 with a two PC setup. Gaming on a Windows PC and sending the image over to OBS on a M2 MacBook Pro using the Elgato HD60 X, it's pretty easy to capture the audio from the roadcaster on the Windows PC but this is where my problem is, I also record music on my MacBook using an Apogee Symphony interface into protools. what is the best way to use the Apogee Symphony interface as my main source on the MacBook pro and at the same time feed that audio to the Rodecaster so that the stream can hear the music session as I hear it. Or maybe there's a way to use both interfaces at the same time?, idk Note I tried headphone out of the Apogee interface into a line in on the Rodecaster but it wasn't that great , how would you attack this ?

The GoXLR lives on with unofficial / Officialish 3rd party support. They recently even added Mac support which TC Helicon never did. So I wouldn't be so quick to throw in the towel on the GoXLR. Besides it just works without issues. Personally I'll stick with the official software as long as it works. Then switch over to the 3rd party software only when needed long before I'd give Rode a dime.
@NasDa
@NasDa 11 ай бұрын
If you are looking for a GoXLR alternative, DON'T BUY RCP2. For one thing, in GoXLR you get 5-7 channels right? In RCP2, you only have 3 channels, so for your mic, discord and system sound and that's it. If you want another channel for your spotify, you can't. And you need to connect two type-c cables to your computer cos 1st cable give you two channels and 2nd one gives you the 3rd channel. If you love the routing table of goxlr and gives it 10, RCP2's routing table scroes 2. It sucks so much.

I can chime in a little bit here as someone who owns both the Mackie DLZ Creator and the Rodecaster Duo. Both are fantastic and seem to be excellent for anyone who wants a hardware recording solution. I had gotten the Duo first to use in a dual PC streaming setup. USB 1 is connected to the gaming PC, while USB 2 is connected to my streaming PC. It allows me to easily capture multitrack audio for post-production audio correction, while still being able to live stream with the audio I've got. The Mackie is for a set of KZfaq videos I am going to be doing on the basics of music production. I had considered the RCP2 for it, but the increased inputs seemed like a no-brainer for me. I had also considered getting one of the Zoom Livetrak mixers for it, but figured the ease of use in terms of automix + the "listen and set levels for me" feature might make setup for different videos that much more streamlined. Anyway, just my input on the conversation.

I currently have my GoXLR routed through my Focusrite 2i2. I want to replace this set up with a Mackie so I have enough inputs for 2 guitars and 2 mics maybe, I also think getting this would make being able to stream Neural DSP Archetypes just straight to a stream instead of having to run Reaper into OBS then through the stream. I'm hoping it will be Archetype then Stream. I also need something to push my RP8 Monitors, as a musician I love having full control of the audio. But as a bad friend I like being able to set up sounds and stream them from my phone.

So this may be a stupid question, but I haven’t been able to get a definitive answer from anyone. With the either, can you set each fader to be something different from the PC like the Elgato wave? Like will it detect a capture card? I do mostly console streaming but also do a podcast and I’ve been waiting for something like this to come along. Right now I have pc, capture card, music, discord, and mic with the appropriate sub mixes. Will either be able to do the same?

Do either of these have digital input/output for each channel within windows sound settings? Or is it only a mix from the device into the PC? That's the single most important thing for me.

I don't know about Mackie, I own the rodecaster pro 2.. But yes it does have digital inputs and outputs to computers. The usb c ports on the rodecaster pro 2 are 2 way channels, that you have full individual channels routing and volume control over. Plus the primary usb port on the rodecaster has another 2 way channel. In otherwords if you need to, you can have a total of 3 inputs and outputs into 1 computer with 2 usb c cables. Personally, I use 2 of those channels for sub mixes for streaming, one is what twitch/youtube hears and the other is what I record on obs that doesn't have music and some sound effects. The 3rd channel I just run my mic through for discord/zoom etc

I really like the increased number of faders, 1/4 inch line inputs, and processing on the Mackie, but the dual USB-C ports for a 2 computer setup is just so clutch on the Rode! If Mackie comes out with a 2nd gen that adds another USB port for a 2nd computer like Rode did then that would be a game changer.

@@creativegreatsvisuals the biggest one i can think of are streaming scenarios examples: Gaming live streamers often run 2 machines, one for the game and the second to capture the gameplay and manage all the inputs, alerts, and the streaming upload itself - this is to take the process lift off of the gaming PC so you have the highest performance possible. Second / Podcast scenarior is that you've got a podcast host with a laptop running a slide deck or pulling up audio on the fly, and a show manager - think Joe Rogan's Jamie - that can pull up content, manage stuff going on and recording. This way both people can connect and manage audio if necessary. It's not a MUST have, but it is pretty nice to have available.

No solution,Mackie support ignoring questions about it. The Mackie system is built on fat32 which is outdated and doesn't support large files (over 2gb in this case) so all your recording split up. The other major problem is the lack of timestamps

I was so close to buying the RCP2 but, although they have been claiming to be working on it, their lack of virtual cables to assign to any audio source was a deal breaker.

As someone with a 2 PC Setup I am having a huge issue with my Mackie in that the 'analog' portion that is transferring audio to my Stream PC is elevated VS the audio that is transfered via my USB C. I've contacted Mackie but while I've gotten it working the less control on sub mixing etc on the Mackie is a huge disadvantage. Granted I'm one of those 'crazy' people you mentioned. I took a leap on the mackie and they've assured me with future software and firmware updates they will fix this....but starting to look like I'm going to need to return mine and get a Rode Procaster 2 instead.

I replaced my broken goXLR with the rodecaster pro II... Never have regret it since. It is absolutely great for my 2 PC setup. The dual USB is a gamechanger. Still lacks a few virtual channels, but I solved that problem with a StreamDeck +. Also, having the possibility of Back channels for talking to you gaming buddies, without going out to stream with just a press of smart pad is pretty great. Thanks for your video Harris...

@@tokaji9092 ye that's what I thought. You need another mixing software or device (elgato wave link software or BEACN mix device) to make it work for streaming so basically RCP2 turns into an audio interface with sound pad. IMO if a product needs another device to do its job then it's a bad product. That's why I regret buying RCP2 in the first place.

@@NasDa for me it is so much more. I have my microphone, my DJ controller connected to it. I have my wireless microphones connected to. I use the back channel smart pads for talking to team mates off stream. And the big advantage is the two USB. With it, I can use my microphone on both my PC's, with just one mixer. Also, I had the SD+ anyways and why not utilize it. So for me it is good as it is...and maybe one day we will see more virtual channels ;)

In elgato wave link softwere or goxlr or BEACN, you can have 6-9 channels for your mic, your game, system sound, browser and spotify etc. In RCP2, you only have 3 channels and you need to plugin both of the type-c lines as 1st one gives 2 channels and 2nd one give you one. Comparing to the routing tables in goxlr and BEACN the RCP2 one is a joke and one of the most confusing thing I've ever used. RCP2 is for podcasters or music content creators, not for streamers, especially those who are used to goxlr, elgato and beacn. That's why RODE released streamer X later.
