The Spanish Civil War was a conflict fought between 1936 and 1939 and ended with a Nationalist victory, leading to almost four decades of fascist dictatorship. But as is often the case in civil wars, many people from other countries also fought and died for both sides in the struggle for Spain's future.

Totalmente cierto.

There was very little support from the USSR. At the time The USSR was courting France and Britain, looking for an alliance which would contain the aggression of Germany. When this ultimately failed, the Soviets signed the Molotov Ribbentrov pact to avoid a war they werent ready for. The USSR planned to be ready for war in 1944, so they needed time to prepare.

Religion played an enormous role in the affair, and up to that point it played a huge part in Spanish life in general. The Catholic church enjoyed tremendous political and social power and the Second Republic's forced secularism and the church immolation by the Far-Leftist parties did more to drive the faithful to join Franco's forces than any piece of Fascist propaganda ever could.

Liked it a lot! Only two things were that I'd include that the Soviet Union supplied substantial aid to the Republicans (Communists gotta stick together after all), Mexico under Larenzo Cardenas gave $2,000,000 to the Republicans, and many of the Romanian fascist organization called the Iron Guard went to fight for the Nationalists as well. Romanian involvement was important because two of the most important members of the Iron Guard, Ion Mota and Vasile Marin, were killed in the war and subsequently became seen as martyrs against communism by many Romanians.

There is a very famous song called Viva La Quinta Brigade which was about the 15th International brigade consisting of mostly Irish men. Great song that explains the Irish Republicans and Irish fascists. Here it is..... 10 years before I saw the light of morning, a comradeship of heroes was laid, from every corner of the world came sailing, the 15th International brigade, they came to stand beside the Spanish people, to try and stem the rising fascist tides, hate and love against the force of evil, Frank Ryan's men came from the other side, and there is more to it

Most of the Irish who fought for the Republic were ex IRA from the War of Independence (1919-21), they voted to transfer to the Lincoln Battalion on 12th January 1937 because some of the officers in the British Battalion had served in the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries during the War of Independence and they wouldn't fight under them. On the Nationalist side Franco couldn't get rid of O'Duffy and the Blueshirts quick enough.the only real action they were involved in saw them mistakenly engage in battle with some Italian Fascists from the same side. O'Duffy refused to leave Spain until Franco gave him a letter stating that "They had fought bravely defending the faith"

I like that you provide good detail and you seem to have a good grip of the cultures involved, such as your excellent pronunciation of nouns. I would like to see you spend some (more) time on theory or biographical aspects of these histories to build a better picture of the people involved and to just paint a clearer picture of the people. Otherwise your videos do have a slight tendency to feel like lists of dataset and events in chronological order. Otherwise, keep up the great quality research. Thanks

Mexico was the only country, other than the Soviet Union, to officially give diplomatic and material aid (both for civilian and war use) to the Spanish Republic, going so far as to covertly buy small arms, naval ships and warplanes on the international market under its name to then smuggle to the Republicans (this was necessary given that the large "democracies," the US, Britain, and France were officially "neutral" and as a result had a naval embargo and block on Spain, which let´s be honest, it was a backhanded way of helping the Nationalists win without appearing to be openly helping Franco´s thugs). There were around 5,000 Mexicans that fought on the Republican side, they were largely integrated into the regular Republican forces due to their cultural and linguistic similarities. Additionally, there was also the Benito Juarez Infantry Brigade (named after the first Mexican president) in the International Brigades which was relatively small. After the war, Mexico also welcomed around 50,000 Spanish Republicans as refugees, more than any other country.

@Stephen Jenkins The Nationalists were getting help (weapons, supplies, and volunteers) from Nazi Germany and Mussolini's Italy. The French and British blockade overwhelmingly affected the Republican side (which was much more democratic than Nationalist Spain, you dipshit). That's why it was a backhanded support to the Nationalists disguised as "neutrality. Read a bit more before spouting drivel.

@Stephen Jenkins a naval blockade by definition is not neutral. It's an act of war. No one had illusions in the French and British colonial powers coming to the aid of the Republic. The Republic was simply too weak to have taken them on as well. There was no neutrality, only the rhetoric of neutrality. Think a little more.

It’s sad to see so many commenters with severe misunderstandings and errors about political theory and history. I’ve noticed a disturbing strain within KZfaq history fans that often lament and tacitly support far right and fascist government and militias throughout history. I have even seen a commenter say he/she would actively have fought for the fascist forces of Franco in the name of ‘law and order’. The victory of Franco backed by the Nazi and Mussolini regimes issued in decades of oppressive dictatorship in Spain. This should not be forgotten. It is absolutely true that people fighting against the fascists committing atrocities and war crimes. However this should never be an excuse to reduce the complexities of the civil war to ‘killing reds’. The Marxist Leninist factions funded by the Soviet Union were antithetical to socialism. Socialism is worker control over the means of production with industrial democracy at its core, NOT state ownership and centrally planning authoritarian control. I hope many history fans look further into political history and don’t just take the tired lie ‘Soviet Union = socialism’ as gospel.

Yes people forget many innocent people were killed in vile cold way on both sides, its completely ignorant and disrespectful to dogmatically support either side. But if i had to choose i would say the republic was, in the end, a legitimate government doing its best to advance liberalism and democracy even tho the leftists wanted it to be more radical. We can't know what would have happened if the republic had been allowed to continue and find its stability, what we do know is that Franco's regim suppressed free speech and freedom, and continue to execute dissenters and liberals for long after the war ended.

As far as I am concerned, WW2 really began in 1936. The people knew it before their governments. We need to not look at history as an affair of Nation-States, but of people and ideas. EDIT: Shucks, no mention of Orwell? I've taken a few courses specifically on the Civil War in Spain. Might I suggest Paul Preston's "The Spanish Civil War: Reaction, Revolution, and Revenge"? It is, to me, the ultimate account of the war.

WW2 doenst have a universally agreed on start date. In Czechia and Slovakia as well as sometimes Hungary the war begins in 1938, the Russians consider the war to have started with their involvement and this is probably also true for the East Asian nations. The invasion of Poland is considered the start of WW2 by most, but not by all the countries in the world

by WW1 do you mean trenches associated with the western front or mass movement and defensive strongholds of the Eastern front as well as Mesopotamia it was more similar to Eastern front ww1 as like the eastern front their just wasn't the manpower to build continuous trench lines like those on the western front so the stalemate never happened (although on a side note the Trench warfare stalemate of western front was only 1915-1917 in both 1914 and 1918 it was really a war of movement much more like we associate with the second world war with the 100 day offensive of 1918 carrying all the hallmarks of what is associated with Blitzkrieg)

If anything its a massive misnomer that the Western Allies went into WW2 with WW1 techniques they didn't the Army of 1939-1940 was far less mobile far less capable than the Armies of 1917-1918 due to the budget cuts and the loss of expertise (talented officers leaving etc) in the 1920s the Armies of 39-40 of the western Allies were far less capable than their forebears and to be honest If the German Army of 1940 (which in itself was less capable than the German force of Operation Michael in 1918 had came across the Western Allies of 1918 they probably would have been crushed by the sheer weight of fire power. In WW2 the Western Allies spent 1939-42 relearning the skills and organisational systems developed in 1916-1918 that had been allowed to atrophy in the 20s and early 30s.

The fact that Mussolini supported the church really amazed me beacuse from the sources i do study, they always show them on a stance more related to an " enemy of my enemy" situation, based on their mutual hatred of Marxism. Considering that Benito used to be a Socialist and remained an Atheist troughout his life, not to mention the strong Nihilistic influences on his take of Fascism. But perhaps i got my information wrong, or he took more pro-christian personal views troughout his later years .One way or the other this video has encouraged me to study the subject even further. Thanks!!!

ScottCantDance True, the modern conception of propaganda as bad naturally developed, since propaganda, in the purest sense, is media that helps support and propagate your position. So if the facts don’t quite do that, then you often ( like 97% of the time) have to skew those facts.

Because of this when my grandad did his national service he wasn’t able to sign for the army although he fit the criteria and signed an order where he wasn’t allowed to talk about it because if they put him in the army they thought he might defect to Eastern Europe and they were worried in case he would become a spy.
