Scientists tend to stay away from political and ethical debates - but more and more political and ethical questions depend on scientific knowledge. In this video, produced for Compassion in World Farming, Prof. Yuval Noah Harari discusses key facts about animal experience and the ethical questions they raise.

It does seem possible that there could be humanely produced dairy. It is the factory farm that produces animal products to be affordable, though. Barring some different more humane technology, only the wealthy elite can afford products produced without animal suffering. Even then, it is often a fraud that provides a false peace of mind.

Thank you for talking about this. I am now in my seventies and due to health I eat far less animal products than I used to earlier in my life. I grew up in and around a farming family in the humid pampas of Argentina. I learned to process most animals into food. We were taught to be grateful for the food we were about to consume. Later on when killing an animal prior to butchering I would thank the animal for feeding us. Now I know I would be incapable of ever killing another animal for food. I know i would kill it if its suffering was unnecessary. I m divulging this to all my friends and family who have enjoyed processing and eating all meats.

Would world suffering go down if we reduced animal agriculture? Would we be able to feed people better if we stopped giving most of the grain we grow to farm animals? Would greenhouse gas emissions go down if we stopped making fertilizer for the crops we feed to animals? Would loss of biodiversity decrease if we stopped cutting down the rainforest to create grazing land for cattle? Would global health improve if we ate more plants? Now I agree with you that veganism is not the most efficient way to produce food. Grazing animals have the unique ability to convert grass and other inedible plants into meat and milk. We could also feed animals milling residues, protein-rich oil cakes left after extraction of oil, by-products from creating alcohol, leaves and peels from canning fruits and vegetables, and fruit pulp left from creating fruit juice. But let's be real here, eating less meat (and other animal products) is one of the best things you can do for the planet right now.

Why would anyone focused on having an objective view of the reality we live in and putting serious thought to it feel like that? To put your mind at rest, I present you an excerpt of an article he wrote for Haaretz in 2014. “Israel’s neighbors should recognize its existence, the Israeli occupation should end, and the Palestinian refugees should be allowed to strike roots, even if that falls short of giving them justice. In practice, as we all know, none of this is happening. The truly great anomaly of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is that the global order has been willing to allow these anomalies to fester for decades, as if they were perfectly normal.” www.haaretz.com/only-in-israel-or-only-in-palestine-1.5253847

Aye I gathered whales have a higher spindle sell count than humans after taking into account size. I'm also not sure e.g. guilt is a uniquely human emotion. Dog owners intuit that guilt is a strong emotion for these animal companions. Considering we also know oxytocin (the 'love' drug) is highly secreted in dogs, and how much we might consider love and guilt as highly connected emotions (something I have observed and theorised, without scientific evidence, although perhaps something is out there on this?), I think a lot or all animals could experience guilt in some way. Motherly love and fear are, for me, the two basic emotions. I wonder if both consciousness and these two most basic primal emotions could go all the way back to amoebic life forms, on some essential level.

Many of that "90% that can't afford to subscribe to veganism" have a vegan diet because it's SO much more affordable and accessible. 3. Veganism can help solve many of humanities problems. With a vegan world, we'd lower air pollution, deforestation, dislocation of native tribes, death from heart disease, acidification, drought, extreme weather, and END world hunger. 4. Being vegan does not impede any other actions to help humans. A vegan can go on protests, sign petitions, put pressure for government action, volunteer with aid agencies... in the same way a non-vegan can. 5. What are you doing to contribute to, say, the abuse of Palestinians? Unless you're a Israeli government member, probably nothing. What are you doing to contribute to animal abuse? Everything: buying and financially supporting this abusive and murderous industry. By being vegan you can stop this abuse at no cost to any other human rights issue. So in conclusion, if you TRULY care about humans, you'd be vegan, as it's better for humans and doesn't impede you fighting against other human rights abuses.

And even if they don’t have emotions, isn’t it a fact that they have a life and no one can survive on something which doesn’t have life? Keeping that aside I am working hard to be a vegan at least for as many days as possible!
@ichodernicht8131

I would say plants don't have emotions because plants don't make decisions. Emotions are necessary to quickly make the right decision for survival or procreation. Plants can't move on their own, so they have no need to make any, especially quick, decision ever. So, there's no evolutionary impulse for a plant species to develop emotions. A plant that is afraid of a cow eating it won't live any longer than a plant that is completely fearless at the sight of the cow since neither plant can act on their emotion (or lack thereof).

That is assuming that the plant can even sense the presence of the cow. Which it also can not since, again, it couldn't act on that sensation anyway.

A very inspiring speech, while I find the idea that every bite of beef or every box of milk is produced in an inhumane way is really hard to accept, considering how much I love beef steak and latte. Admitted I am trying to avoid thinking about those poor animals and continue finishing my breakfast.

This is a disconnect that the meat industries achieved by hiding the truth and advertising meat is good for you and the main source of protein. Just like the tobacco industries used to. It's brainwashing and indoctrination that cause people to be unable to disconnect meat with suffering of abuse and torure caused to the animals.

Perhaps another question is: When an animal is living in constant state (or even a rare state) of stress, do the chemical compounds (cortisol among others) that flood their bloodstream have impacts on the phycology and physiology of humans that consume them? Love you Yuval!

Jack Kabibble My guess is that stress, anxiety, and fear consumed begets stress, anxiety, and fear in the consumer. It is important to remember that the animals we are consuming could live +/- 50 times longer if they were in good conditions, but the animals they we are killing in 6-9 months would nearly all have overt diseases and organ failure. Exactly what we are seeing in the human population that are over-consuming these animals. I wouldn't be surprised if agricultural practices (having studied the studies) are responsible for much of our "unexplained" health epidemics.

Any of those studies you studied make a direct connection to support your claim? What is stress in a cow? Has anyone talked with a cow and asked them what is stressing them? Sure, in an industrial breeding situation, the cow isn't doing what it would normally do on a range. But then again, do humans accept their fate when they are put into horrible situations for extended periods? I suspect there are some studies done (Hitler might have done it to Jews) of taking a baby, toddler, 10 year old, teenager, adult and having them live in isolation without human contact of any kind. Did they stress, I suspect they did, but then did they adapt and accept what was happening to them? If they accepted, didd their stress go down? Once we personify the cow with human emotions that scientists haven't proven, there becomes a subjective or non-scientific argument that will create sides. Sure, by nature, a cow, elephant, chimp will wish to go to its mother. The mother will allow her young to suckle but may not let just any young suckle. Humans, the father doesn't get any kind of empathy towards their child except through the bound they have with their spouse. I've also read a piece that claimed human babies have some of the father's features so the father will bond with the child. This is mine, I shall protect it thinking because men don't get that it was growing in me like the mom gets. Emotions are nurtured. In the absence of the nurturing behind the stimulus for the emotion, the emotion may never materialize. Isn't that demonstrated when DOCs claim a person who kills pets, etc, because they didn't have an emotional tie to a parent as an infant makes it possible for them NOT to feel the emotion of love, caring, understanding or empathy to other humans. This lack of connection makes it possible for them to indescremently kill others? That is how many wish to claim a mass murderer or serial killer is capable of doing this horrible deed rationalizes the act? They didn't get the nurturing. If this IS true, and if cows DO have emotions beyond flight or fight and herd mentality, then NOT having the emotional ties to the cow and the subsequent nurturing given to the calf by the cow won't happen. They won't realize that the mechanical utter placed in front of them isn't mom that should be giving it emotions, higher order feelings, etc. The nurturing associated within its world is all it knows. Because it is all it knows, it isn't going to be stressed other than what fight or flight is found in the calf. At some point early in its life it realizes that if it tries to run or fight it gets hurt and all the noises around it are not something to stress over? That it acclimates to its surroundings. Arguably, aren't people who are claiming the calf is overly stressed giving it qualities and experiences that the calf never had making the stressful environment people see to be greater than what the calf is experiencing? That we, with our knowledge and world experiences are putting our selves in the position of the calf and then saying, "geeze, I wouldn't want that" as if the calf is thinking that. Yet the calf doesn't know any other life so it accepts this life which removes the stresses from its thinking? It does go to the genesis of the question if you never experienced freedom, do you know that you are missing it? But once you experience freedom, you can never forget it? The calf never experienced anything other than this life. To this particular calf, it doesn't know other calfs eat grass and suckle on its mother's utter. This calf is ignorant of what other calfs have. It has food, it has water, it is safe from preditors. From a cow's perspective, that is a good life. Humans may not like that thinking, but that is the life of a cow. Born to be a hamburger and a leather belt.

"If they accepted, didd their stress go down?" Yes, it's called depression. Most of your questions were already answered by the foundations of psychology, when human infant psychological traumas were studied through experiences with non-human mammals and confirmed that the mechanisms are the same.

Please support animal rights. Animal welfare permits inherent cruelties including weakening animals with domestication, inseminating them for breeding, and slaughtering them. Rights recognizes and abolishes these inherent cruelties, let's not perpetuate a "humane" way to cause a sentient being pain when it's unnecessary and immoral.
