Just because a watch is more expensive or fetches a higher dollar (in terms of appreciation) in the aftermarket doesn't make it more significant or iconic as it relates to a brand. I'd argue, if not for the Datejust, Rolex would not be the recognizable brand it is today. The Datejust is instantly recognizable as a Rolex to the "layman" whereas a Submariner is not, IMHO. I'd go so far as to say to most outside of the watch community have no idea what a Submariner even is.

Don't we all have both? Both are classic Rolex. Agree DJ36 is the way to go for the reasons stated, SS rather than TT.

Sub / Date-Just : completely two different animals. Sub is a tool watch and the Date-Just is a dress watch. We clearly need one of each.

The DJ isn't a dress watch, it's a sports watch, or perhaps just a watch (which is its strength). A dress watch is a slim, classically styled watch, ideally hand winding and without a seconds hand, worn on a black leather strap or perhaps a mesh bracelet in precious metal. The term "dress watch" is massively abused these days. Because of the unfortunate trend for people wearing tool watches as everyday watches, real everyday watches get incorrectly refered to as dress watches.

@grand_caliber I don't think it's debatable. Rolex is the biggest name in watches, it's the most recognized name, people who don't know watches, know Rolex and know their flagship watch. The Submariner. No watch collection is complete without one.

Fun video and format. Datejust is your quintessential watch; Sub is quintessential TOOL watch. I think Marco won pulling the Bluesy into the debate--I think that is just an iconic warch. Looks like a million dollars on the wrist.

When I go to buy my 1st Rolex... it will be a DateJust... I understand the Sub is iconic but the design of the DateJust is a better looking everyday, every occasion watch in my opinion! Especially on jubilee.

I just found this Chanel and vid, loved this content! Both are Iconic models, but just due to the variety of Datejust's with different dial colours and materials, and more recognisable worldwide as the quintessential Rolex, The Datejust pips the Submariner to the post for me.

Both classics but the Datejust is actually a little better than the Submariner...The Datejust has elegance and grit with a high number of variations to attract everyone. We can only compare the exterior due to the fact that the Datejust and Submariner share the same movements.

Agreed!! It got edited out, but one of my arguments was that the price point being more accessible on the datejust is largely caused by the fact that it was ALWAYS popular and so there are many examples floating around

I like Datejust more. I think watches don't look as good worn on the right arm. They were designed to be worn on the left. I know the thing about adjusting the time while writing, but nobody does that and even if one did, it would be very hard to reach and turn the crown if watch is on the right arm.

Perhaps this video should be renamed to “The Rolex Rivalry in America”. Marco is overlooking the fact that in the US (and other Western countries), Rolex enthusiasts obsess over the sports/tool watches, whereas in the East, watch enthusiasts prefer the elegant, classic Rolex (DJ, DD, OP). And yes, I do agree with those that have pointed out that the classic, elegant models are what have put Rolex on the map. At least for me (a Western man myself), I first think of the elegant, classic models when I see the name “Rolex”.

One of my personal favorite modern GMTs! The black and grey bezel is amazing in person and I’m a big fan of two tone watches already so it’s a huge winner to me

@@fivedigitking yeah, the late 80s reference in twotone Black has always been a grail (birth year)and I was just about to buy one earlier this year. However I am now lucky enough to have payed a deposit and been put on a waitlist for this new “guiness” it couldn’t have been launched at a better time for me personally.
