Honky Tonk woman is a good song to find out if you are a real Stones fan. As opposed to just liking some of their songs. Because this song is arguably the most quintessential Stones song with its distinctive riff, the guitar weaving, and rhythm. There is no way you can think this song is mediocre and be a Stones fan.

Thanks for the reaction! Here's the thing about people who do these reactions. Most listen to the song one time. Then, they make a decision on whether they like it or not. That's not how we experienced these songs. Well, yes, we did that first part. But, we heard it again. Over and over. Over a period of time. Most of us listen to these songs with friends family and others. That affects how we feel about a lot of these songs. There are some songs that I didn't like when I first heard them. This may have been one of them. I don't remember. But, over time of listening to an album or going to a party and hearing it or hearing it on the radio, you hear it differently. It's not like the first time. You hear things you didn't hear the first time. You hear things you didn't hear the second time you hear things you didn't hear the 30th time. At least, with great songs. So, yeah it wasn't your favorite. And that's cool. But, I encourage you to listen to not just this song, but, all of these new songs to you, more and more often. Because, there's a reason people are suggesting that you listen to these songs. .

There’s two versions of this song. This was released as a single but a very different version is on the Gimme Shelter album from 1969 as Country Honk. It’s worth a listen to see how the same song can be styled two ways. Maybe they got the idea from what the Beatles did with Revolution in 1968.

Ouch, Chod. I finished with you. ;>) Just kiddin'. Appreciate your honesty. My high school friend had a basement rec room with a real jukebox (of course, it was fixed so we dint have to pay). We'd be shooting pool and I would always put this song on. After a while my friends stated to make fun of me for it. I think it's the beat and the cowbell. The Stones did a country version of this called "Country Honk" with a fiddle. You may want to check it out.

I'm 70 if you didnt grow up on this music you'll never understand it all. It was a time in history were there where changes going on a lot of the music your is a reflection of the time Stones music or a lot of others music was based in that time not just based on a opinion if a song is good or bad. The body of work and time are maybe more important then other things.

The Stones have such an incredible catalog that spans for 60 years next month. And although they are a Rock n roll band( (Arguably The Greatest one in history) They Have ALWAYS kept up with the times. EXAMPLE: When Disco was big in the 70's As a rock band they had one of the biggest style disco hits that went #1 with (Miss You) Knowing your a drummer I gave you this great Stones rocking suggestion before, if you get around to it? I'm sure your going to love it. And all the reactors seem to miss this one. It called (Monkey Man) Trust me! Once everybody sees you reacted to it? If you do? They will all be following you. I sincerely enjoy you reactions.

This song is my go-to argument for why it’s wrong for bands to use MIDI and metronomes for the various reasons that they do when recording. The difference in tempo between the start and end of the song is massive, but it serves the song. At the beginning, a slow groove is simmering away, and the lyrics start to tell the story. By the end, the pace has truly picked up and it’s transformed into a bluesy rocker that’s celebrating the Honky Tonk Women the song is dedicated to. I swear this song would not be as great if they were locked into a tempo defined by an engineer who needed them to stay ‘in time’ so he could do a bunch of automation and other such post-production tricks. Music has been around for millennia, and timekeeping devices for musicians and singers only for a very short period, relatively speaking. I always feel a band should play at the tempo that feels right at the time, whatever that is.

You started with ground-breaking epics like Gimme Shelter and Sympathy For The Devil. It's hard for a short blues-rock song to compete with the expectations. But I don't think you'll skip to the next track if it pops up in the future. I think it'll grow on you, just like the song itself grows in layers, from nothing but cowbell to horns and backing singers.

Don't like this version? The Stones re-did this tune on Let It Bleed, (considered their finest LP), calling it Country Honk, with the great Sugarcane Harris on fiddle, recording a countrified version of their original 60s single. It kills. Meanwhile RIP Charlie Watts, if you're a boomer, you feel you know this man. It's like losing a family member, an integral part of the Stones sound. Finally we need to talk about studio vs live. The Stone are phenomenal live. I saw them in Mtl 1972 and they rocked the house down. They came on stage and it's zero to 6o, without the zero. But they were just as good in the studio. They spent hours on individual tracks, tinkering with arrangements, tuning, musicians, mixes, etc. Listen to the studio versions of Monkey Man, Moonlight Mile, or You Can't Always Get What You Want to get a broader understanding of just how fucking good they were. Love your channel, keep on.

Hey Chod. Personally I love this song but that's in the context of what else was around at the time and once you love it, it stays with you. If you want some more top echelon Rolling Stones, give "You Can't always Get what You Want" from the same album as "Gimme Shelter" a try. But the studio version. You may have seen a live version that's doing the rounds but the studio version is next level. Appreciated your honesty as usual - and that's from a Rolling Stones fan since 1963.

As a guitar player, I've always appreciated the playing on this song, staying away from a simple riff or chord structure, instead going for something a little more innovative and funky. Stones are certainly one of those fundamental, foundational bands that defined the 70s, along with bands like Zep, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Floyd, Genesis, etc.
