The Rook (1974) is short animation based on a quick little game of chess. The chess board act as witness to a game in progress. The players move their pieces until two kings remain and the game back to continue from the beginning which represent ongoing metaphor of political power vs. loss of society.
The humorous piece of animation looks at the absurdity of war, politics and stance of society in between these notions.
1. Honorary Diploma for the best short film from Tehran 9th International Festival of Films for Children and Young Adults (1974)
2. Honorary Diploma from Krakow 12th International Film Festival (1974)
3. Bronze Medal from Krakow 12th International Film Festival (1974)
4. Gold Medal from the Virgin Islands International Film Festival (1975) it is worthy to note that 38 countries participated in this festival and there were 2000 film entries.
5. Silver Medal from Chicago 11th International Film Festival (1975)
6. Honourable Mention from Los Angeles International festival of Children’s Films
7. Honourable Mention from the 4th International Animation Film Festival in New York
8. The Rook was selected as an outstanding film of the year for presentation at the London Film festival in 1975.

Let me explain about this animation 1-This Animator is Persian. 2-in Persian Rook is Castle 3-Bishop is Elephant 4-Queen is Minister

Kopen Hagen at first persians not arab then yeah its based indian chess but animator is perisan

wow, i absolutely love it! this is my first iranian animation i saw, well except for Persepolis of course which isaw in school years ago. i'm mainly interested in old(er) animation, from 60s and 70s, so i'm very happy i found it!!! if you're here it means you have a great taste in art love from Poland

سرشار از خلاقیت! من در دهه ۱۳۷۰ شاید اولین بازی کامپیوتری شطرنج خلاقانه رو مثل این دیدم که فرنگی بود بیخبر از آنکه در ایران ۱۳۵۰ این فکر قبلا شده بود

Hilarious and well animated! First I've seen (or heard) of a male queen though, was that a thing in old-school chess? I always wondered if it was, but have never heard of it directly.

In this version of chess, instead of a queen there's a piece called a "vizier" that can only move diagonally 1 square (but unlike pawns, they can move backwards). And instead of bishops there are "elephants" that can move diagonally 2 squares (hopping over an occupied square if need be).

in the middle east, we use to different names for the Queen and the Bishop for not so obvious reasons The Queen is called "The minster" or the Vizier and The bishop is called the Elephant idk what the other guy is saying but we play chess the same way over there haha

In Arabic, the Queen is called the Minister, and the Bishop is called the Elephant. As that is what they used to be in the old school of "chatarange".

@@hulkamal5434 He’s referring to the rules of chess used in the Middle Ages and ancient times. Chess moved from India to the Middle East and into Europe. The elephant and minister were changed to the bishop and queen in Europe, since elephants aren’t native to Europe and queens usually acted as the King’s highest adviser in medieval Europe. The rules of chess were later altered in Europe, adding the modern moves of the queen and Bishop. The new rules became popular and spread to the east where they also became popular.

@@alireda646 The rook is represented by a castle tower in modern sets, but the word “rook” is actually Persian for “chariot.”

@@WideMouth the chariots in ancient India had fortress wall like structures on them. When Chess went from India to middle east it took the persian name rook (chariot) and when moved to Medieval europe then it was named castle because of the structure.

در ایران به bishop یا همان کشیش فیل می گویند که در حقیقت همان فیل بوده و در اروپا ینگونه دگرگون شده.این شکل عاج فیل است. نام دیگر سرباز یا پیاده نیز در ادبیات پارسی بیدق است
