Believe it or not, the surface area of your small intestine, which is where your food is absorbed, is the size of a tennis court. Your small intestine is also the home of your gut-immune system, which accounts for about 60 percent of your total immune system. The lining of this sophisticated system is just one cell layer away from a toxic sewer where all of the bacteria and undigested food particles live in your gut. If that lining breaks down-from stress; too many antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen; steroids; intestinal infections; a low-fiber, high-sugar diet; alcohol; and more-your immune system will be exposed to foreign particles from food, bacteria, and other microbes. This, in turn, creates havoc that can lead to an irritable bowel and other system-wide problems including allergies, arthritis, and autoimmune and mood disorders.
In today’s episode of a new series called Health Bites, I discuss how to heal irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and upregulate your gut health, which is at the forefront of Americans’ most common health complaints.

Don't underestimate stress folks. Many people think stress is this invisible ethereal thing, but its really there. Anxious people tend to have gut issues- solve the underlying issue , which is most often related to stress. Somethings you've been ignoring, or avoiding. Either you have adhd issues and you're carrying too much weight, or you don't talk your problems out. Or , most commonly watching movies or media that bring darkness, sadness, depression or anxiety into your life. More than eliminating bread, try eliminating negative media of all kinds. Music that is too violent or loud? change it to soft and calming music. Happy movies, not sad. Talk with friends about positive things, nature is your friend, get some sun and walk. Fix whatever is causing your anxiety and your gut will follow- it is your second brain after all. ( obviously don't ignore your dietary needs and supplements)

Is there a reason why functional medicine doctors don't usually accept insurance? I would love to find one but paying out of pocket is just too much, and my plan does not reimburse for out of network providers. I'm so unhappy with the usual care that's out there

@@sarapiksit that's not it, lol. It's because regular insurance doesn't pay for things outside of the "standard of care". Regular medicine basically ensures everyone does mainstream treatments by not paying for other treatments. Most functional medicine doctors would love to accept insurance because they'd get way more business. The insurance companies just don't pay for it.

Intesteringly enough I had an IBS flare up and I went to a gastroenterologist who prescribed a drug for constipation which sent my gut over the edge. ( I also have celiac and have followed a gluten free diet for many years.) I finally quit taking the drug when I looked like I was 8 months pregnant and went to the health food store where I got supplements for gut renewal. Between watching your videos, following the IBS diet and taking the correct supplements my gut is healing. Thanks to you and I hope my story helps someone else.

@@charvankerck9617 my GI doc that did my colonoscopy, in 2021, said diet has nothing to do with colon cancer. However, he failed to address any of my IBS symptoms. I’m consulting with a new GI doc in Feb-2024 to hopefully get testing outside of the actual colonoscopy, and get more answers. I’d agree, junk food definitely doesn’t help the IBS situation. The more carbs and sugar the worse. But, as we know too many high fodmaps and too much fiber isn’t good either.

I have been deteriorating badly in the last 6 months, since I had a severe dry cough. Nothing that has helped previously is having any effect and I've been to hospital numerous times, my Functional Medicine Doctor and Gastroenterologist have both given up. They have no idea what is happening. I've had Faecal Transplants previously and they have helped, but in the last 6 months they have actually made it worse. In the last 2 months it has actually spread up into my mouth and throat. It started with what seemed like a slimey biofilm. Perhaps from candida, as I'd had oral thrush. Then a fizzy type gas started building up on the whole surface of my mouth, which felt like my skin inside my mouth and throat were fermenting. This has gradually spread and has has now broken down the whole lining of my mouth and throat, to the point where it is literally just a porous spongy tissue left. The lining is completely broken down. I feels the same all the way through my whole digestive tract. Doctors are just assuming that I am crazy when I explain this. But, it is unfortunately, all too real. I just got a stool test back. My bifido bacteria were a bit low, butyrate was also a bit low. But, Calprotecton was 117 and funnily enough, my akkermansia muciniphila was the highest level possible. Which is supposed to be good for the digestive lining. But, anyway, I am at a point of complete despair. Doctors are just passing me onto another doctor or suggesting mental illness. No idea what to do next.

What about recurrent SIBO? Is this related to a damage in the nervous system?
@ubaidullahakhtar9727
@ubaidullahakhtar9727 Жыл бұрын
I'll tell you what causes SIBO relapse. Even if you use common sense, there only 2 ways for bacteria to enter your small intestines. 1. Through stomach, so if you have low stomach acid (due to antacids, stress, age, low salt diet, antibiotics, NSAIDs, etc.) the bacteria in food won't be killed in stomach and will keep entering your intestines causing SIBO relapse. Use Betaine HCL, ACV, Potassium, Salt and Niacin (B-3) to recover your stomach acid. 2. Ileocecal Valve Syndrome/dysfunction, you may have a chronically Stuck Open or Stuck Close Ileocecal Valve which can have due to a couple of reasons like Stress, caffeine, diet, food allergies, food sensitivities, and SIBO. In case of SIBO, more often than not, its stuck open, allowing bacteria from large intestines to regurgitate back into small intestines causing all sort of problems. You might wanna look into taking good amounts of Chlorophyll on empty stomach to help the valve function better in case you have Stuck open valve. You will also need to eliminate a whole list of food temporarily and add digestive enzymes for better/complete digestion to prevent this valve dysfunction. I recommend carnivore diet for 2 months while you address all these issues. Last but not least, you want prokinetics to keep things moving in your intestines. Use Ginger tea, Iberogast and Bile Salts on empty stomach for this. If you do not address these issues first, killing SIBO would not help as the relapse will keep occurring. Hope this helps.

Listening to this great doctor I realize that we are going to doctors that are too mediocre. I have been suffering from this problem for years, it is very difficult to feel like this on a daily basis. I have asked two different doctors for something as simple as a stool analysis and in both cases they have refused, saying that it is something that is not necessary. They have never done a study on me for anything, they have preferred to do endoscopies and colonoscopies than a simple stool examination. Please don't give up. I respect doctors but a lot of them don't want to think outside the box. They only want to patch the symptoms instead of finding (and fixing) the root of the problem. I was diagnosed with IBS as well since 2021 after having horrible and painful flare ups (they are not fun). I started watching Dr. Berg, Bobby from flavcity (I learned how to read the ingredients) and lately I like to watch Dr. Sten Ekberg. You learn something from each of them. Just following their tips I have lost 12-14 lbs, just by changing my diet. IBS comes and goes, so I decided to see a holistic doctor. She requested a test and just like I thought, my gut is all wacked, so we started a healing process of my gut firts. I can see improvement but I am not done yet. You can AND WIIL FEEL BETTER. I went carnivore because lettuce was killing me! I was having trouble with so many vegetables and fruits that I just decided it might be easier to just go carnivore. And it was! And my body has been so much happier! Both physically and mentally!!

I'm on state assistance. I was diagnosed with h pylori by a student doctor who was about to graduate. During our third visit, my primary physician literally bitched him out for testing me. She refuses to retest me and continue a treatment plan. What should I do?

Please, where can I come see you or get all of these tests done? I’ve been on many diets, thousands of supplements (they always work at first then completely stop) and I’ve told my doctor about all my symptoms and he is clueless. Constant bloating and constipation, abdominal pain, inflamed colon (tmi) severe anxiety and fatigue, severe brain fog, memory loss the last few years, highly stressed all the time, EXTREME insomnia, and I eat healthy! I take pro biotics, every vitamin out there (and all natural stuff with the least amount of additives possible) I spend hundreds ever money, and I work out. Nothing makes sense… please help if you can.

Can you please refer someone in Orange County calif ? I have spent thousands on say they are like you and Funcional medicine doctor and they don’t. They charge a lot and I learn more from you and Dr Hagmeyer on here then with them. I have lupus , but my gut has been bad forever and now worse which I believe it’s the Constipation sibo and inflammatory bowel disease. My inflammation is bad. I did a stool test. That’s about all they did for me. But I have treated natural my whole life and always healed but this way more and weightloss my body is literally starving to death and I’m 90 pounds at 5.7 and skin and bones but my gut is out a foot like a pregnant woman and then I got edema in both legs that were ten times bigger then mine. I could not believe it. The pain is so bad all over and I can’t believe how hard it is in California to find a doctor who heals the gut like you. I don’t know if I should just call your office. I’m doing a documentary on this and I want to live to finish it and have my happy ending after all of this. I’m almost completely disabled now because of the edema and the vascular doctor says it’s because I’m protein deficiency. Please refer someone here ? Please Dr Mark. I have a sick dog too and my fiancé died 2 years ago of Lukemia and he was only 35. We all 3 had years of mold and toxic exposure which in the end there was a fire. I just want someone here to tell me what to do. I know I have to be disciplined with treatments because I know the body can heal but when your this sick and desperate to live and save your dog too, I don’t have family or people to help me close. But these doctors have taken advantage of my desperate situation and I pay all this money and I don’t even have a plan. So I need a referral of someone here in Irvine calif or OC that you stand behind who they are. Thank you and God Bless

Can IBS form without the crappy diet? Mine came out of nowhere it seems and I have eaten a pretty healthy diet most of my life. Suddenly I couldn’t tolerate many vegetables anymore and even steak. It is hard for me to have a healthy diet when my body turned on me. Any advice on where to start healing my gut??

You might want to look up Dr. McDougall and his elimination diet. Which is basically rice, potatoes (white and sweet), and cooked vegetables. Wish you the best success!❤️
