On this ride the Royal Enfield Classic 350rides in Bronte County. Starting in Oxenhope we ride toward Haworth with a great view over the town. Dropping down a very steep hill with a tight left-hand bend we pass the Keighley and Worth valley station and loco yard then head out over the moors roads to Wycoller Hall.
Today Wycoller Hall stands in ruins but this 16th century hall is believed to have been the inspiration for Ferndean Manor in Charlotte Bronte’s novel, ‘Jane Eyre’. The Brontes lived at Haworth, not far from Wycoller, and Charlotte would have passed through here on her way to Gawthorpe Hall when she went to stay with the Kay-Shuttleworths. Charlotte’s description of Ferndean Manor when approached from the old coach road fits Wycoller Hall perfectly.
A mixture of stone-built mill villages, remote farms and fantastic views, this was a short but really good ride.
Grab your cuppa and let’s ride.
Ride safe,
Dave
