David McVicar directs a new production of Umberto Giordano's passionate drama of liberty and love in the French Revolution. It presents a fictionalised account of the life of the pre-Romantic French poet who was guillotined during the Reign of Terror in 1794. Acclaimed tenor Jonas Kaufmann (“One of the great singers of our time” -SMH) stars; his three arias provide highlights in a production that also offers major opportunities to Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek as his beloved Maddalena. Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera, conducts.
