One of my favorite operas. The story is sad, tragic end, but there are so many very nice arias and all the music is brilliant.

This production has a Carmen (Aigul Akhmetshina) who, for her voice, acting and presence, could hardly be bettered. Alas, she shines in a staging of quite staggering ineptitude, featuring an open revolving shed and a battery of spotlights of such intrusiveness that one could hardly focus on the action. The modern costumes obviously came straight from charity shops, and were both inconsistent as to period and at times grossly unsuitable. As for the bullring, it never materialised at all! The other singers were unexceptional. All in all, a disappointing experience.

I'm glad of your comment as I went a few hours ago and already wanted to leave midway through the first act. I couldn't, though as there was no possibility of escaping without jumping over the seat and probably twisting an ankle. I am from Seville, where the story takes place. Not only that, Carmen worked in the tobacco factory, a beautiful and old building that later became the main building of the University of Seville, I read my degree there and it was easy to see filming equipment as it was a location frequently used for films about Carmen. The image of this Carmen was a bit offensive to me as she behaved in a quite vulgar and cheap way whether I think Carmen is sensual, cheeky, captivating and so sure of her power over men, but not cheap. The costumes are quite realistic for the men if we think about the Spain of the 70,s but I personally want to see flamenco dresses for the ladies, which the gypsies like Carmen may have worn. Instead she has an Amy Winehouse style hairdo and the factory workers are dressed like farmers from Texas. Seville is depicted as a dessert with dried plants and a dusty atmosphere. It's true it's hot in summer but it's not the far West. To my dismay, the second act was even worse. A lot of the action takes place in some sort of bar. The aesthetic is what we colloquially call in Spanish "un puticlub" meaning a place for the cheapest kind of prostitution, normally isolated on a road, in the outskirts of cities with trademark neon lights. It seems like Carmen and her friends are like prostitutes, one of the men looks like their pimp. At some point they're so drunk that two of the girls start a lesbian scene while Carmen is lying on a sofa completely drunk. I wanted to film that scene but it's obviously forbidden. In retrospect I should have done it until I was asked to leave because then they would have helped me to get out of my row. The voice of the bullfighter though, is amazing, it was of course dressed as John Travolta in Saturday night fever in neon yellow. Closing my eyes to listen to the music did the trick, though. I could not be bothered to come back after the break, of course. My neighbour tried to jump over the seat as well but considered it too risky. I've been to so many operas and ballets at the ROH and Is the first time I have to say a performance was painfu and could not wait to leave itl. I do not recommend.

@@MMercedes-zj9pi I'm sorry you were as dismayed as I was. It's the same with the National Theatre - One never knows whether to expect production idiocy or a masterpiece. Hopefully, there will be a return to more sensible ideas eventually.

@@rosemaryallen2128 oh, no, I'm so sorry for you as well. I only had this fail, to be honest. I previously had to leave an opera but only because my son, who was then six years old and came with me to the ballet productions insisted on coming to le Noce di Figaro but it proved too much for him. At some point he was shouting "Boooring!" And pretended he was a cowboy shooting at the stage. I was so embarrassed but he was very little. The opera was perfect though, and I did not want to leave. I saw Madama Butterfly recently and found it too minimalistic for me. I was shocked the public will boo at Pinkerton at the end as well. This happened with Rothbart in the Swan lake a few weeks backl. So for a village theatre, expectable but I would never thought I could hear boos at the ROH. It wasn't about the singing, but about the credibility of the performance of the "mean" characters, though. But still...this is a professional interpreting a role. I loved la Bohème, amazing production , visually gorgeous as well. And all ballets were were an absolute delight this season except for Don Quixote at some levels. I must say though I also liked Don José yesterday. Very clear French as well, so easy to follow unlike some others. And I'm a French and Spanish teacher, so following these languages is not a problem for me. I would expect this production at the Saddlers Wells. Like Matthew Bourne's Romeo and Juliet being set in a mental hospital. This is in, my opinion, so right for this story and it totally worked for me. Because I know the actual setting, Carmen didn't, though.

@@rosemaryallen2128I'm sorry for you as well. I found a better performance while passing by the pub in the corner from people singing after their team won. This is the first time I feel like this at ROH. My neighbour was also trying to escape but felt jumping over the seat was too risky and aborted mission. I had to leave La noce di Figaro due to my son (7 years old), who insisted on coming was shouting "Boooring!" And pretending he was a cowboy shooting at the stage. I should have done that for a chance to escape faster. That said, I went to La Bohème, which was gorgeous in every sense, I found Madama Butterfly's stage too minimalistic even for Japan but amazing opera. I could not believe, though that people were booing at a character (Pinkerton) which is shocking in this theatre. More boos for Rothbart in The Swan Lake, all because they were credible as "mean" characters. All the ballets this season, except for some stuff with Don Quixote have been gorgeous as well. Carmen, though was insufferable.
