@@lmm Yes! Love that kind of preservation stuff! And that 'tube whistle is awfully similar to some of the air whistles we have on streetcars (trams), and the dual controls-ish cab setup is something I particularly love on these kinds of industrial locos.

There's nothing quite like a Ruston & Hornsby shunter! Descended from good Lincoln folk, having lived in York and regularly walked past Rowntree's and lived in Grantham where Hornsby's originated and heck, even born in a place called Hornsby, am I now rather in love with this little loco? You betcha! Am I also a little bit in love with you for sharing this footage, well, err, not quite, but I am very thankful! :)

I can understand your enthusiasm for the Ruston 88DS- I have a soft spot for them myself (see my Icon) having helped commission and drive one at Upper Boat power station in the late 60s and being involved with the procurement, preparation and delivery of the GWS loco from Didcot power station (then being constructed) to the Didcot Railway centre. If it had been towed dead, the chains would have had to be disconnected, but that was avoided by driving with engine running, coupled behind a 08 BR loco (necessary to operate the track circuits) on the main line-great fun! The loco did need some work- new leather ring on the air brake cylinder, cylinder head repair & extraction of rusted spark plug from the Wolsley petrol donkey engine, a change from 6V electrics to 12V and a complete repaint. After that it was a very useful engine for shunting and PW work, but the heaviest consist that it was called upon to move was the hauling out of the shed of "Pendennis Castle", "Blue Peter", the Huntley & Palmers fireless loco, and a coach all coupled ( I could be wrong, but there might have also been a crane tank loco in the consist). Quite a load, but the Rustons are impressive little machines. One point, again relying on my memory, seeing the movement of the pressure gauge, the gearbox oil pressure is normally maintained fairly smooth by air pressure in an accumulator in the gearbox and the shutdown procedure should ensure that the air is not lost when the engine stops, otherwise the charging procedure has to be followed. I enjoyed your video, the memories it brought back, and it was obvious that you were enjoying driving the Ruston. Well done.
@lmm

Oh that's really cool, what an adventure to be part of! They were certainly built to last! What am impressive load for it to drag. The owner of this did say it should move 500 tonnes on the level. Yes indeed, this one's air system was very good. We charged the tank for air start after the engine fired up, and it maintained it for the day - owner said it'll last weeks!

I used to live next door to Rowntrees in York before the Swiss took over. They still had their little railway. York is a smelly city, there were two breweries and Rowntrees, take your choice depending on wind direction, mash or chocolate. Only it wasn't just chocolate, they boiled down bits of animal for the gelatin to make jelly, eww, but the worst was the After Eight days when the air smelt of peppermint. Nice for the first 5 minutes then quite nauseous. In the mornings my little Metro would be covered in brown dust, I often wondered what if I licked it, would it taste of chocolate? My Wife would love a full sized loco.

I would argue on one hand, based on all the tribulations your team have faced, that the fewer vehicles you have the easier it is to keep on top of everything - especially since your passion for vehicles is part-time. And yet your enthusiasm for anything new and exciting to add is delightful, unwavering and the sign that the essential measure of getting everything back in order is there. Loss of a girlfriend to that is entirely another matter! Regards, Samuel F.

I can see you loved that. It's great to see you doing your bit for recruiting some younger folks (like yourself) into the heritage/preservation scene. I was listening to a programme (probably on Radio 4 - I'm old) about one such place and one of the old boys was worried that there wasn't enough younger people coming up to hand on the skills required to keep these fabulous machines running. After all, the old boys and girls with the knowledge won't be around forever. Also - what's going on in some of these carriages (not the passenger ones) you often drag along behind you? That second pink one seemed to have a working chimney - is there a stove in there to keep the guards warm?
@lmm
@lmm 4 жыл бұрын
It's a worrying issue that is creeping up, getting my generation to be involved in such things like this. There aren't enough of us around at the moment, and many railways - and societies generally, are crying out for volunteers to come and be part of it. The railways that I'm part of are same people week in week out. It's important for me to be passing on what I know now to try and get the next generation involved. I'm lucky, I'll be one of the younger people to have actually learnt from ex BR drivers. That's just what's known as a Van, or general term, a Wagon. That's what freight would generally be transported around in. The last one is the brakevan, marking the end of the train, providing additional braking, and yes, has a stove to keep the guard warm!

It's worth mentioning that on normal operating days you can usually drive whichever locos are in use the full length of the line for £5 under supervision, and light engine between the scheduled service trains: www.dvlr.org.uk/self%20drive.html I drove this and their 03 and 04 over the course of one afternoon and the following morning in May 18. I have a question! Does UK still make it's own locomotives! It really pinches me when great British car and lorry manufacturers are lost in hands of invaders ! This is what happened when British leyland was acquired by the Indians and now they make crap copy cat versions of ford iveco trucks ! And what I hate more is when Tata had completely changed the meaning of land rovers from a manufacturer of 4wd workhorses to luxury cars ! The British did make quite better cars ! And slowly Britain is loosing it's industry! There was a time when the greatest buses and cars were made in large number ! Also many of their greatest works machines are not preserved! Darjeeling,which is my native is also a home of many Land Rovers of the 50s'60s and 70s ! The locals still preserve it ! But people working in junkyard just break them with hammers ! My uncle owns a collection of land rovers and I know all about them by heart ! One day when I visited a city in southern India ,I noticed one Land Rover lying in the garage ! I was glancing at it ,when all of a sudden when a stupid guy (owner of it ) approached and said that it is a pile of scrap ! And that moment my blood started boiling !

Boring thought. The speedo most likely works the way it does, because otherwise you would need an extra diode or two. The meter presumably measures a voltage, which is proportional to the speed, and is most likely generated by a spinning magnet in a coil of some sort, and smoothed by a capacitor (condenser). The voltage will be positive in one direction and negative in the other, hence the center weighted meter. I could of course be entirely wrong. Time to consult the service manual, which of course will be in the glove box ;¬)
@lmm
@lmm 4 жыл бұрын
Oh that would make sense. I've got no idea how they're linked. I love the idea of checking the glove box for the manual 😂
