The Ryzen 5 3600 Is Still Really Good

Today we're taking a look at 2019's excellent all-rounder, the AMD Ryzen 5 3600.
This Socket AM4 6 core CPU was ideal for those who wanted to play games, stream and create content. Although it will fall short of modern, sometimes less expensive options, I think it's still certainly worth considering in 2022.
Thanks for watching :)

Zen2 really was the moment when Ryzen sorted the quirks and just became a brilliant line of CPUs. My 1600 was okay, my 3700X is just immense. Nice to see the 6 cores are still doing as good as the day they came out

For me: 1st gen Ryzen: as with every new endeavor, it was a bit buggy, not much close to Intel at gaming, but everyone knew it would be better in the future (at least when comparing i5 vs R5) 2nd gen Ryzen (zen+): was when Ryzen was starting the mindset, with even better prices, a bit more performance and MUCH less bugs. But still behind. 3rd gen Ryzen (zen2): it was the turning point, when everyone felt safe at switching to AMD. Honestly I felt more amazed with the zen 2 launch than with Ryzen launch! 5th gen Ryzen (zen 3): all around improvement, finally getting the gaming crown, but also with AMD trying to upsell its processors. 5th gen Ryzen told us that AMD would happily become Intel 2.0 if left without competition. Waiting anxiously to see what 7th gen Ryzen/Zen 4 brings us

Curious. I am considering an RX 6700 10GB. I have a system with a R7 1700, ASRock AB350 Pro 4 mobo, and 4x8GB G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4 3000 CL15 ram. I also have a R9 3900X which I've had for quite some time but not installed since I want to use the Wraith Prism cooler but I'm missing the screws to secure the plastic brackets to the back plate. Wondering what you have in your system as far as mobo and ram. Edit: Also wondering about your monitor. I'm using a 43 inch 4K TV with 60 Hz refresh rate. What resolution do you run and what kind of frame rates do you target at that res?

I miss mine, though I got a 5600 new for $150 so I went for it. 2 months later it worked out cause I found a 3060 Ti for a good price too and upgraded from an RX 580. It's a hell of a CPU for around $80 used (at least that's what I paid for it in late 2020) But I never even fully pushed it to its max, since it was typically always GPU bound at any resolution. Only time I saw it fully utilized was during stress tests and benchmarks lol. Could hold 4.1Ghz all-core @ 1.31v all day never breaking 65c w/ the Wraith Prism, wasn't too bad at all.

But as someone who tends to play things like Skyrim SE, Fallout 4, 3, NV etc even the 1650 was more than adequate for what I used it for. So if my friend hadn't unexpectedly offered the 6800 at less than half of msrp, then I'd still be using them 1650 which admittedly would probably be a more sensible pairing.

I built my computer in Oct. 2019 w/r5-3600 and rx5700, use it every day (carry it to work for daily use, then back home for gaming/fun), in-fact, I'm typing this on the rig...still feels like my "new" computer aside from the duct-tape handle and scrapes/dings. I was given one of these all-but on launch day as a birthday present by an extremely generous friend. Still proudly using it today. Pushing a GTX 1080, under a cheap 240 AIO, with 16GB 3600 RAM, an Asus X470 Prime Pro, a 240 NVMe SSD for boot, and a 1T SATA one for my games. Does absolutely everything I ask it to do, and because I don't buy new games much, will continue to do everything I ask it to for years to come. .... it's already three years old? Doesn't feel like it! Then again this was my first true current gen processor since I built a Core 2 Duo.... Was rockin' a hand-me-down FX4100 when the C2D got a little too old to play the games I wanted. The FX with 8GB RAM and a GTX 470, which was upgraded to an R9 290X (boom) ... uh, I mean, GTX 970 (dead) .... darnit! RX 570 4GB (whew) were still "enough" when I retired them. Just now I have room to grow and stay relevant for even longer before it's time to finally upgrade again. Hopefully a meaningful used or New/Old Stock GPU market exists again by then, and I've got tons of options to grow into without even needing a new motherboard. Though since I don't buy new AAA blockbuster games much if at all, and there's a sprawling market for older or indie titles that this rig is more than capable of running, I don't see myself upgrading again for a *very* long time. Probably when my hand is forced by a hardware failure. My finger is on the pulse of that 1T SSD (sometimes hangs while updating games) and the AIO (it's cheap) as being the next causes of longevity concern.

The 3600 should remain a decent option for another year or two, especially if you overclock it so that it remains at its highest boost clock of 4.2GHz at all times. I haven't tried it with the 3600, as I sold mine a while ago, but the Wraith Stealth can handle up to 100W of power if you don't mind it being a bit noisy, so it's a no brainer in my opinion to give it a static overclock and enjoy using it for a bit longer.

I'm running it with a GTX 1660 SUPER and it holds a solid 144fps @ 1080p in Fortnite, CS:GO and other competitive games at medium settings. I generally lock it to 72fps (half of 144Hz) for AAA titles at medium to high settings. The 1600 was a significant bottleneck and was causing a lot of stuttering especially in high fps scenarios. The 3600 just fixed everything for me. I've slapped on a cheap $25 tower cooler on it and overclocked it to 4.0GHz. It barely touches 76C when on full load in Cinebench R23.

Great summary of this amazing chip. I scored a 3600xt way under the 3600rrp when the Ryzen 5000 launched in 2020. It rocks 4615 MHZ with PBO at 65 watts, easily running my 1440p triples with a 3080.

Just upgraded to 7900xt and using this cpu. Gaming at 4k 120fps on an oled and I've not noticed any issues with performance. So, guess I'm good? Good stuff!
