First it was professional cavalry that won the battle not Sacred Band. Once Theban cavalry routed Spartan cavalry which was in serious dissadvantage in numbers and training, the Spartan cavalry run over it's own lines they lost cohesion and that is when Sacred Band charged. Second, it's said that Epaminondas developed proto Phalangites because slingers were placed inside the Sacred Band forces and of course Phalangites had the longer spears. That also explains unusually deeper line. And we also know that Philip of Macedon was pupil of Epaminondas so all hints toward new military inovation Sacred Band had but we can’t know for sure. I don't know what you're talking about, but in one battle they kicked off the Spartan King Agesilaus II, and in another battle (Leuctra, if I'm not mistaken) they killed the Spartan King Cleombrotus.

Fabio in real life the sacred band of thebes would have mopped the floor with them but if both forces were in a hoplite formation things may have been different in this game

I love Alexander the Great, but the defeat of the Sacred Band of Thebes is not on his curriculum, it is on Philip's curriculum. Yes, obviously we know that Alexander was one of the leaders on the winning side, but whoever takes the trophy is the chief leader - in this case, Philip.

They were not. They translated a word incorrectly in that in ancient Greek means something different than in modern Greek. In ancient Greek means "strong friendship".

@@wingedhussar4219 the words used for the members of the Sacred Band were "eromenos" and "erastes", both derivated from "eros" which in ancient Greek was a word for lust and erotic, sensual love. The word used to describe deep friendship, but without any erotic context, was philia and such people would have been described as philoi (friends) or hetairoi (companions). They were gay as heck and there is nothing wrong about it.

Well, gay in a way far different than what one may think. Homosexuality was well spread in the ancient greek world but with extreme differences with today's standards. Yes many men had male lovers with which they had usually a strong bond either of friendship or an experienced older warrior/young apprentice warrior bond. The thing is that they also had families with a wife and children. So far away by today's "gay" standards. Penetration was viewed as something bad and wrong except for young slaves and young boys. So yes, homosexual in a way but nothing to do with today's way of thought about it. One could maybe call them bisexual in a way but still not exactly with today's connotations.

In the battle of Tegyra (which took place before Leuctra) the Sacred Band also defeated the Spartans. They were outnumbered over 2:1 by the Spartan force and still managed to completely rout the enemy and kill two Spartan leaders.
