The song is so beautiful and sad. I think it is not first of all about the sheep but betryal between people. That someone can sell their best friend or companion for gold or money. I love this song but it make tears in y eyes.

That is the saddest song that I have ever heard! As I listened, I hoped that Todor would buy back the ewe Rogusha, but unfortunately there was no happy ending. But at least this song indicates that in Bulgarian culture maybe animals are appreciated and loved.

Roy Kosonen ...?Beautiful comment. Once you have betrayed your Love, there is no coming back. The heart torn apart fills with the rain of unrelenting sorrows: human tears. I know.

Roy Kosonen Indeed there is variant of the song where the mother of the lamb Rogusha is saved by the Shepard's dog and brought back! Yet the song is for the betrayed love... Greetings

Bulgarians have a strong connection with their animals; my great-grandpa had his horses stolen by the turks to pay taxes, due to lack of money, and he cried for days.

Ok, so for some context... is the meaning behind the song that a child is asking about his mother sold in slavery during ottoman occupation? Or am I reading too much into it.
@dayanbalevski44464 жыл бұрын
The story can be applied to the trying times of the Ottoman slavery and really any situation of loss and betrayal. However the song itself is about a Herdsman and his flock of sheep and his betrayal.
@user-pg1er7ct9v3 жыл бұрын
It's about betrayal of a good and innocent friend. It's about not keeping someone's promises. The dialogue is between an animal and a human being and of course the person has done something bad. A little lamb is crying and asking his Master - the shepherd why he had sold its mother - the Best sheep in the herd. He sold her for money to some cruel butchers to be slaughtered. And she was special because she managed to save the whole herd from drawing during a flood not long ago because she found a place from where to take the herd away from the coming waters. At that time the shepherd was so happy that the sheep saved the whole herd so he promised that he would cover her legs and horns with gold. But in stead of this he sold his favourite sheep. This is a Very sad song because lots of times in our lives we are forced to do dishonest things and betrayals because of poverty, greed, fear, selfishness or some other feelings. And this song is about these terrible and immoral deeds in life. It is also about suffering of absolutely innocent creatures because of these deeds. In this song the sheep is the victim and the lamb is the other suffering creature as well. At the end of the song after hearing the sad reminding about his unkept promise from the lamb's mouth, the shepherd starts crying but it is too late for him to erase his sin.

hhmmm this is like the romanian balad "Miorita"...only there there are 3 shepherds instead of 3 merchants, the 2 of them try to kill the most kind of the shepherd. the sheep is trying to warn the good shepherd about the murder that is going to happen.
@anonymus43525 жыл бұрын
More precisly is similar to " the shepherd who lost his sheeps".

lol... thanks, didn't pay attention. p.s. we romanians also have a ballad (i think this is a kind of a ballad, i hope i am not wrong) where a shepherd talk to his lamb, is sad too enough with deep meanings, is called Miorita. (you can find a lot of versions, some are not so good, but some good versions and interpretations you still can find on youtube) ...type Miorita/Old pastoral epic Ballad. all the best. if you will need translation i'll find for you one =)

Yeah they are tied together. No matter what nationalists say. You are right. They are different but are connected. Jews migrated through the Balkans from the Middle East and northward. Balkan music is has its own quality but much of it is similar to eastern tradition and also greatly influenced by the Ottoman days.

This is not for meat. This is for mother. Do you remember baino (sir) when Tundzha (a river in Bulgaria) came and broke all the bridges. My mother Rogusha (name) save the whole flock. And you baino (sir) promised, to make horns of gold, hooves of silver, and so on. Why my mother sold. Todor (sir name) was very sad, he sat down with a kaval (musical instrument) to play. Tears drowned the kaval.
