I always wondered that with sequential dogbox gearboxes, the engagement is so quick, feels like the drop in revs is quicker than snapping the throttle shut, get engines being in say 3rd gear at 7500rpm then in 4th at 6000rpm in less than 1/10 of a second, the inertial forces are just mind boggling

Same here I was always fascinated with the engineering behind all Engines the fact that they go for thousands of miles is incredible.

@@andrewandrew3713 I dont agree, boxer rev faster and high because the inertia from the piston on the left is taken over by the piston on the right, and vice versa. Inline 6's and boxer 6's both cancel out secundairy forces hence why they are both balanced. The thing an inline 6 has going for it is the simple design compared to a boxer, but a boxer engine has the low center of gravity not only suited for rally, but for any type of racing. It has handling benefits

@@PogoDigitalism I see, every piston and conrad move at the same rate as the crankshaft, just everyone on its own phase. Inlet and compression - 1 revolution. Ignition and outlet - another one revolution. Every piston performing 4 strokes (phased from each other) as the crankshaft's revolving, So, yes, these RPMs are per every piston.

I can name as many shitty i6 with spun bearings galore, block issues and 1000 bad design choices that f-d reliability as I can name good v6 or vice-versa. The quality and reliability of an engine is irrelevant of it's cylinder layout. Its dependent on that particular engine, the material used, cost savings or lack-off etc.

The plastic crap parts are all over the place in german vehicles like VW (and this includes Skoda, Seat too). I believe in german cars so far, so i drive a Lexus IS 200 with over 200k miles (or km) with no issus, just regular maintance, what a normal human can do.

V6 and H6 aren't balanced, they perform as an I3. They have Primary Imbalance.

@@user-lz3sv5sw9u First, that's a B6, not an H6. Look at pistons positions. Second, I6 has perfect 1° and 2° balance, but V6 and B6 don't. Third, as they don't share same pin, they have individual pins, so, they create a rocking couple (minimal, but real), that's why they aren't balanced. And of course, they use a counterbalance shaft. Not sure about the motors in the 350Z but the VQ37VHR in the 370Z has a 1-2-3-4-5-6 firing order

@@HavokTheorem So it's about perfect balancing around the crankshaft center that matters not the form factor of the engine.

@@tashtant this matters, but also design choices independent of cylinder layout have an effect. Conrod + piston material and design, flywheel mass, size of intake and exhaust all have an effect on how aggressively an engine can rev. Making an engine super revvy will surely compromise the low rpm performance and stability though. A well balanced configuration will need less moving mass in general though.

“H” stands for *horizontal* aka flat, in case you didn’t know

There's a lot of technology going into cars' exhaust systems. The LFA sounds so beautiful because of its carefully engineered exhaust. A straightpiped WRX sounds nothing like its stock counterpart.
