SAN PATRICIOS - THE IRISHMEN WHO DIED FOR MEXICO
Saint Patrick's Battalion, "The San Patricios," a notable arm of the Mexican Army during the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848.
Dubious about why they were fighting a Catholic country and fed up with mistreatment by their Anglo-Protestant officers, hundreds of Irish, German and other immigrants deserted Taylor's army and joined forces with Mexico.
Led by Capt. John Riley of Co. Galway, they called themselves the St. Patrick's Battalion (in Spanish, the San Patricios) and fought against their former comrades in all the major campaigns of the war.
The history of the San Patricios is a woeful tale of angry, bewildered, naive, or calculating young men, from varied backgrounds, who deserted for a myriad of reasons and paid a fearful price.
The San Patricios, in the words of one Mexican general, "deserved the highest praise, because they fought with daring bravery." But eventually, Mexico surrendered, ceding almost half its territory to the United States.
Each San Patricio who deserted from the US side was interned after the war in Mexico and subsequently given an individual court-martial trial. Many of the Irish were set free, but some paid the ultimate price. Roughly half of the San Patricio defectors who were executed by the US for desertion were Irish

The catholic Irish always fought on the side of absolute monarchy, feudalism and servitude....you can romanticize all you want, but they were never on the side of freedom, nor on the side of the rights of individuals to make their own way in the world.....so it makes sense that they would go fight on the side of an aristocratic elite ruled by a military dictatorship

My dad is from Ireland and emigrated with his family about age 17 to America (New York) so technically I am American but. my father would also tell me I am also Irish and well I'm proud of Los San Patricio's even though the USA government considers them traitors, I do not. They were fighting for Mexico against the same anglo imperialism that invaded Ireland many centuries prior and still occupying Ireland. Living in California now most of my life I have made many great Mexican Amigos and I am a member of an Irish-Mexican friendship association where we honor these heroes every year and celebrate each others cultures including Saint Patrick's day and Cinco de Mayo.

Southerners were actually rather accepting of Irish immigrants. The Stonewall of the West, Patrick Cleburne, fought for the CSA in the American Civil War not over slavery or State rights but simply because the Southern people were so kind and welcoming. It shows in how mostly the South has Celtic heritage while the rest of the country has largely Germanic.

Officer Patrick Dalton of the San Patricios tore the white flag down, prompting Gen. Pedro Anaya to order his men to fight on, with their bare hands if necessary.[7] American Private Ballentine reported that when the Mexicans attempted to raise the white flag two more times, members of the San Patricios shot and killed them" Its a crazy story.

Believe Mexicans in Mexico know. They are celebrated every year in Mexico there is plenty of videos here on KZfaq that show it, and demonstrate it. Alot of my fellow American Mexicans, and Irish both who I've talked to know little to nothing about The San Patricios, but it's not really their fault because here in the U.S. they are not taught about. Shit growing up as a kid in school all I was taught in relation to the Mexican/American war was The Alamo, Santa Ana, Jim Bowie, Sam Houston, and that's pretty much it. The Alamo is almost a separate piece of History than the Mexican/American war in a way. Anyways I've seen some fellow Americans insinuate that Mexicans don't care, or don't appreciate the San Patricios, but that couldn't be further from the truth. I'm not saying you are doing that I don't even know if you are American. So don't get me wrong I'm not judging you in any way. I just want to put this out there so that any Irishman, or Woman don't get the idea that we Mexicans, and Mexican/Americans don't care about the San Patricios. ERIN GO BRAGH

It sounds like your father was a great man for teaching you so early in life about The SP Battalion, he must have done a great job raising you overall, because you seem like a really nice/friendly person. Was your father a Professor here in the U.S. or in Mexico? When I taught my Son about the San Patricios about 10 years ago when he was around 7-8 years old he felt the very same strong sense of comradery, and respect for The S.P. Battalion, and for all our Irish Brothers & Sisters in general as I felt when my father taught me about the battalion when I was young. Much RESPECT, and yes may your father always R.I.P.

sergio castillo Hi Sergio: My father was a professor of history here in Mexico. I remember that he told me that there were political pressures (and I believe that there are still) to not divulge too much the history of The Saint Patrick's Battalion here in Mexico. Greetings from Mexico City.

Hello Brother how are you doing since we last talked? Yeah one of the things I think about is these men could have just deserted the U.S. Army, and disappeared, but no they decided to stay, and fight for Mexico. So to me that speaks volumes of the great spirit of righteousness in the hearts of our San Patricio brothers. Truly GREAT men they were. I am so glad they are celebrated every year not only in Mexico, but also in Ireland. The Irish are a good people. BTW nice pic Bro. Is that a peace pipe tomahawk in your pic? I like pipe/hawks. As a collector of cutlery I have a few hawks similar to the black military/tactical one I have in my pic, but finally I ordered a pipe/hawk the other day. Can't wait till it shows up. Hawks are one of the most underrated tools/cutlery ever, because they are so multi/functional, lightweight, and easy to lug around. Hawks are like a hatchet, knife, climbing pick, billy club, you can hammer things with the side of it etc etc. Yet many seem to prefer a Bowie knife over a hawk when camping, hiking, survival, or whatever. Each to their own I guess. Anyways enough of me babbling on. Have a good 1, and stand tall as always Native Brother.

no wonder, to this day there are plenty of people from Monterrey, Mexico and surrounding towns that look totally Irish, I just came across a ginger family and plenty others with uncanny irish features, and I always wondered why they looked like that, being of Mexican nationality,no disrespect, but I have a friend that looks just like a leprechaun lol, I call him lil' goblin, haha no but for real, he's white, blonde green eyes, and he could easily pass for an actual irish, now I know why, they're definitely of irish descent.

I am a red, white and blue hearted American Patriot no doubt and love my country but as a man who’s descent of Irish Immigrants and Settlers and as a fellow Roman Catholic, I have nothing but the upmost respect and love for my Catholic Latino Brethren down south. If anyone of my brother’s down south reads this, know this…As long as you’re good hearted person, you’re more than welcomed at this Irish Gringo’s house and dinner. I’d love to share a beer with my brothers and dance with my sisters. Same goes for any Irish reading this in Ireland. All are welcomed, it’s just especially special when you do it with your Catholic Brethren. Out of all the opponents in war my nation’s ever faced in history, despite killing Davey Crockett and invading Texas, Mexico has my highest respect 🇺🇸 🤝🏻 🇲🇽 ✝️🙏🏻🇻🇦🇮🇪

As an Irish American, I'm ashamed that many of my fellow Irish Americans know little to nothing of this awesome history of solidarity between the Mexican and Irish people. We threw out our history and heritage to become Amerikkkans. But I known he history of my people. Both the Irish and the Mexican people were victims of imperialism and colonialism. I will be teaching my Irish and Puerto Rican children about our _real_ history as colonized people, and teach them that the US is simply the offspring of the British Empire, both of whom are the ideological descendents of Babylon the Great. And Babylon is falling, at last.

The Irish and Mexicans are not so different, they are both good at fighting and drinking, apart from sharing their religion, the flags are similar, both nations lost territory because of their neighbor with red and white stripes that usually have a lot of why they took from the others as much as states united they usually invade and rob other countries
