The Argentinean Submarine Santa Fe found itself in the crosshairs of relentless adversaries. From the deck of HMS Antrim, a Wessex helicopter descended upon its unsuspecting prey. The Wessex unleashed a thunderous assault, hurling depth charges into the depths below.
Other British vessels nearby quickly dispatched more helicopters to support the pursuit. Among them were several Westland Wasps, the first British helicopters to see naval use. Decommissioned a few years before and brought back into battle to serve the British Navy once more, the Wasps were desperate to prove they still had some fight in them.
Like a swarm, the Wasps unleashed a volley of AS.12 anti-ship missiles upon the enemy submarine. The missiles found their mark, exploding with devastating force and sending shockwaves through Santa Fe's hull.
The damage to the submarine was too great and the crew abandoned the ship. They knew the war would not end well if the Westland Scouts and Wasps were still in the air.

I never thought I’d be one of those people with personal comments on these vids, but my dad worked at Westlands as chief draughtsman during the “Jinx” (Lynx) development at Yeovil and that semi-rigid rotor-head was the secret sauce to much of the agility. He was proud of the Lynx, and I was proud of him. Distinctive sound, too, I can still tell it apart without seeing it!

Having worked as Ground Crew for this beast and as a Door Gunner during the Gulf War, I was always in awe of this machine and it capability, not only that it was designed to be fly by wire, though pilots were not ready for that. Traveling in the Lynx at 15 feet above the deck with the door open and gun out is a sensation I will never forget and it is how I got my handle - lol.

Both Portugal and Brasil recently upgraded their Lynx fleets with new engines, almost doubling the previous ones power output. This also brought some changes to their cockpits, which are now equipped with digital IDUs. The Portuguese Navy Helicopter Squadron just completed 30 years with the Lynx (Mk 95 and 95A variants), with a rather impressive zero-accident mark.

During the 80s and 90s these Helicopters would fly over my house constantly Day and night for years, we lived a few miles away from what was then RAF and AAC Aldergrove flying station during the "Troubles". I always watched in Awe. One of my favourite helicopters, the Chinook was also amazing to see, you could hear them coming from miles away. Nowadays there is no activity as the Military have more or less pulled out of Northern Ireland.

I was down near the border in Fermanagh and the contrast between the RAF Puma’s and Wessex with their measured landings and the Army Air Corps head cases coming in with a pair of Lynx’s at low level, one pops up to give cover while the other stands on is tail at the landing spot for a quick in and out was extreme. As a kid it was like having a personal quick air show. One of the most dramatic was a Chinook firing flares and doing a kinda corkscrew dive while flying near Rosslea. It’s only later I realised it was probably a reaction to the IR sensors screaming, at the time it was just wow!

I worked as a Royal Navy Aircraft Engineer on these for most of my career from the mid-80s to the early 2000s. Easy to work on, reliable, and great to fly in (for a military helicopter). I was at the EXPO in Singapore in '97 when the Aussies announced they were going to buy the Shitty old Yank Seasprite instead of the Lynx (typical of the bloody Aussies as they would buy dogshit off the Yanks if they could!). Don't think that deal went well did it?! They spent tens of millions on an absolute disaster of an aircraft and ended up scrapping them. Meanwhile, the Lynx lasted another 20 years in RN service before being replaced with the Wildcat.

Dark Skies, should do the story of California National Guard Rescues Campers Trapped by Fire Sept 5 2020. Originally, I heard they were ordered to return because of limited visibility from darkness and the heavy smoke. The lead pilot put on night vision goggles and told the second pilot to return, second pilot replied I go were you go sir. The story has changed since then and the crews received the distinguished flying cross. UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter and a CH-47F Chinook helicopter.

Lynx was born after a study on rotor blades, to create an efficient design for the rotor's outer tip that moves in supersonic.
@nickmaclachlan5178
@nickmaclachlan5178 6 ай бұрын
The aircraft didn't originally have the BERP blades fitted until the mid/late nineties even though they were used on it's world record breaking run in '86. And the rotor tips reached a maximum speed of 0.97 mach during that run, so they were never quite supersonic.

Dark Skies got it wrong (again!) in referring to the Lynx AH Mk7 being the last of the line of the original Lynx for the Army Air Corps. The last was the AH Mk9 with its wheeled undercarriage (shown later in the video as it happens). I've been fortunate enough to fly in a Lynx, just the once and it was in a Mk9. Brilliant helicopter with innovative groundbreaking technology for the time in the 1970s when the aircraft was designed. Such a shame that its big sister, the Westland 30, was a commercial failure and became victim of politics (the "Westland Affair"). I used to watch Westland 30s fly over my parents house in the 1980s, operating for British Airways Helicopters, then British International Helicopters, out to gas rigs off the Norfolk coast.

I'd like to remind the author of the video as well as the commentators that the Lynx was the result of a Franco-British cooperation program. The design and researches were conducted by Franco-British engineering teams. It was produced in British AND French dedicated factories, and it was in service in both the British (Army & Navy) AND French (Navy) armed forces. And it was/is exactly the same for two other choppers: the Gazelle and the Puma. Thank you in advance for not forgetting to be historically accurate in the future...
@grahamwhite1656
@grahamwhite1656 10 ай бұрын
The Lynx was offered by the UK as part of a 'package deal' of co-production. Westland contributed the Lynx for which it retained design authority, and the French contributed the Puma and Gazelle on a similar basis. The Lynx was designed in the UK in response to a requirement to replace the Scout (Army) and Wasp (Navy). Very little French design was in the basic aircraft, being limited to specific modifications for the French Services.

We have decommissioned better equipment and technology than we presently have in the the Uk. Nothing has changed over many years, Frank Whittle was refused funding for the jet engine etc etc. same old story. But we got the London dome and the Eye. So all is well..

OMG it is the chopper WHICH did that thing. Adding sensationalist adjectives simply makes the story demonstrably untrue because every second word is opinion.

I spent 45 years as a licensed aircraft mechanic working on Helicopters. I never worked on a “chopper”. None of my colleagues ever worked on a “chopper”. We all worked on HELICOPTERS!
