I occasionally go to Greek church because my son married a Greek girl. We, being ghostly white Irish people get stared at all the time.
@papiapoumilaei3 жыл бұрын
yeah but it's because you're pretty and they think "all these foreign women are going to seduce our men" LMAO.

Ghostly white. The Irish population is made of phantoms, banshees, wraiths, and spirits (the last word may or may not refer to ghosts).

I once went to a Greek community festival with my best friend, who just married into a Greek family. I did not expect the gasp or to feel unwelcome, but in retrospect, I understand the foreigner distrust (history)
@dimitrispvoice1333 жыл бұрын
Dude, that's actually quite innacurate. Many foreign people go to greek orthodox churches, they are allowed and respected for that - and they actually love it! I know that from experience as a greek. But of course and most greeks would be surprised when they see foreigners in greek churches, it's mostly curiosity about the religion of both sides rather than racism.

Yeah the antiochian ones, at least in the us tend to be a bit more diverse than the Greek ones
@TVrawks3012 жыл бұрын
No doubt it varies where you live - where I live in the US, I went to visit a Greek Orthodox church and all people did was stare at me and no one talked to me. I left as soon as the service ended, I was so uncomfortable! I went to a Russian Orthodox church at a different time and they were nicer.

Same here. From the US born n raised in Baltimore, MD n grew up in Greektown n man growing up n going to the local Greek Orthodox Church they where so judgemental. That's y my mom me n my sister never really kept going only on special/serious occasions like a death in the family. Growing up I DEFINITELY was an outsider cus I didn't goto Greek school, didn't speak the language fluently, we didn't have money lk that n I use to hangout with everyone but Greek kids so growing up I really was kinda not that proud of my heritage because of what was my experience. Plus once it was gone to goto middle school the few Greek friends I had n most of the other Greek kids that where in my elementary school ended up going to county middle schools because their parents DID NOT want their kids going to the zone middle school which I do not blame them because that school was ROUGH! So much poverty in my middle school that they didn't even have A/C nor Heat n they Diddy have regular classrooms. The school was so poor that they used those chalkboards with wheels to divide n separate classrooms where u can hear 4 other teachers n classes going on n the kids there where WILD!!! 95-98% minority students n mta buses where our transportation from home to school n back. The regular local busses where our way to school. Shitty teachers n students n school in general. Baltimore was 1 of the worst cities in the country when it came to schools at the time I was going. The fact that I've I graduated n was going to high school we moved in with my cousin to a county school in this small ass town where that was a cultural shock n change. Going from 98% black n Spanish students to 99% white preppy/wannabe country kids. The 1st day I knew I was out of place culturally. Because at the time baggy pants n shirts where in style where I grew up n went to school n then 2 come to a school where 4 the 1st time in my life I seen dudes wearing pink polos with the damn collar up was mind blowing. So the 1st 2 years I was not even known n this school is a middle school upstairs n high school downstairs in a small ass town with 1 or 2 stop lights where EVERYBODY knew everybody's business n all n the only black ppl that lived there basically lived on 1 block. It was crazy. Once I signed up for basketball my junior year ppl started to know who I was but still thought I had just got 2 the school that year. Lmao. It's because I didn't live there once we found a place 2 live on our own I still went to the school even tho I lived 30-45mins away. I didn't wanna goto another school. It was crazy but I definitely went off topic completely but as I got older after middle school n what not I really was proud to be Greek even though I never had a good experience or felt apart of the "community".

Hilarious but so true! I live in Sparti Greece and have a church right across my house. Every Sunday watching (from my balcony) the people come out of the church, instead of seeing them in bliss and happiness all I hear is gossip of how so and so was dressed and who is with who and all the bad things they can come up with for everyone. Greeks NEVER find sth nice to say about another person. It's in their DNA to gossip. Kudos to you for turning our shyt into comedy.

It's like they have nothing going in their lives. When my parents divorced, my mom went to her friends daughters wedding and she said the people at the next table kept looking over at her lol.
