Also from antiquity till now there are Greeks and Italians that vary in skin tone, some light-skinned some darker-skinned. Racialism has nothing to do with the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean, it's a relatively new concept introduced by germanic peoples and used as a tool for establishing their dominance over the non-germanic peoples of europe and the rest of the world. For anyone who can see, there is still racism in Europe directed from germanic north europe towards mediterraneans and slavs.

Northern Italians and Southern Italians have different lineages. Also, Southern Italians and Greeks are closely related genetically. In any case, if you are Southern Italian and want to see yourself as “whíte”… go ahead. For myself, I see our heritage, culture and identity as separate and uniquely our own. Some call it Mediterranean, some just say Italian, I see us as Latini (not just Latin but the original Latins).
