In this Gibson TV Original Series, host Mark Agnesi travels from city to city to discover the important music landmarks that help shape that city's music scene. In this episode, Mark travels to West Hollywood, CA, to visit the iconic LA venue The Troubadour.
Since opening its doors in 1957, The Troubadour has seen diverse performances from singer-songwriters, up and coming rock bands, standup comedians, and industry icons alike, as well as being the venue for debut LA performances from greats like Elton John, Billy Joel, Hall and Oates, and Metallica. The Troubadour made Billboard Magazine’s “Top 5 Clubs to Play” list and is ranked #2 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s “Best Clubs in America” list.
In this brand new episode, Mark sits down with standup comedian and podcaster Dean Delray to talk about playing The Troubadour, the venue's history and some of the famous and often infamous stories of this West Hollywood music landmark.

L.A. scene...Rainbow, Toubadour, Gazzarri's, Cathay De Grande, Raji's, Coconut Teazer, Cathouse, etc... venues/clubs with great bands performing on stage... nothing can replace Live shows..the Sound, Sweat, Emotion and Social interaction...And that goes for any club or venue in any city that has live music...some of those clubs are gone..but those performances are never forgotten. Dallas Texas is the roughest! I watched a local band that I remember was playing Rush Limelight that opened for Robin Trower get spit on over and over. It was really gross. That was one show I was glad I was away from the crowd and not real close to the stage.

The ‘Elton John at The Troubador’ story is the best: he was nervous and playing his ballad-y type music and not going over very well. This got him angry and he kicked over his piano stool and started playing rock and roll classics and pounding the keys…and the crowd went bananas! He completely turned it around and went from being a somber singer/songwriter to a great live performer with great songs, too. And it started here.

Yeah, I guess. But it's only to generate revenue, so much revenue. At least they have a better business idea than the govt which has a business plan, the plan to destroy the middle class and make us dependent on the universal basic income due to the economy being destroyed.

The upper bar was where Doug Weston Lived when he was alive... It was his Apartment overlooking Santa Monica Boulevard before they converted it....If you were a good band.. He would open his door and check you out...If your band was shit the door would stay closed.. I Once got to step in the Door and talk to him...He had wild antique furniture like you would see in a medieval castle..A suit of armor ...all stuffed in a tiny spot....Doug Weston did a great Service having such a great place to play music for everyone...with a vibe like no other..and I hope the Troubador lives forever

I played the Troubadour several times back in 1994-1995...I would charter 2-3 buses from Orange County and put kegs of beer on each bus. The buses were pretty popular for the time :)...probably ore popular than the band; but we did pack the place. I took the bus home one time after a show...nuf said here.

Damn, hitting it out of the park with this sort of content! Seing historical places like The Troubadour that were so important musically, and culturally in general, is absolutely great. And what a scope of performers, from Elton John to Metallica, Lenny Bruce played here, as did Tom Waits and many many more who went on to create timeless works of art. Can't wait for more 'o these!

As a huge music fan I have always wanted to go to a show at the Troubadour. Had my chance to take my eight year old daughter there during our vacation on March 14, 2020 to see Amanda Shires. I was so looking forward to it until the show was canceled and the Covid shut down began. Funny thing, I did get to go to the Comedy Store on March 12 and saw a bevy of comedians including Dean Delray. He was funny as hell with some very topical Covid comedy. That was another dream come true. I think it was their last night before the Covid shut down as well. I wish both those institutions along with all the great music and comedy venues across our country good luck. They need our support now more than ever. I can’t wait for live music and comedy again.

Played the Troubadour at least twice that I can remember. Once with Carpenters when Karen was still playing drums, and I can't remember who opened for us on the second date. Speaking of first time performers, I remember seeing a young black comedian who was so nervous back stage he almost got sick. Then he went out and killed it. Richard Pryor. Kris Kristofferson did his first show there also. So many great shows - Ry Cooder, Maria Mauldaur, Gordon Lightfoot, Jennifer Warren - on and on. A great show every weekend for over 50 years. Amazing

Back when I used to go to the Troubadour every music headliner had a comedian as an opener, and every headlining comic had a musician opener. The headliners I saw were Richard Pryor, Blood Sweat and Tears, Tim Buckley, and Cheech and Chong.
