Күн бұрын

I have long wanted to sit down with John Waters for a conversation about writing. Over the span of his career he has quite simply written tens of millions of words. In recent years I have come to hold the belief that one of the side-effects of the technological age is a destruction of the modern reader’s attention span. And that this is no small problem for the human race. Today, I was delighted to get his thoughts on this topic and many other subjects during the course of our near two hour conversation. John’s commitment to the written word throughout his life has been stellar and his explorations of different forms of writing during the course of his career is almost unique in Irish literary life.
The artwork for this piece on the West's Awake was produced by the fabulous Jakki Moore please contact Jakki at jakkimooreart@yahoo.com regarding her work or prints of any artwork seen on The West’s Awake.

I often think of the 1960 film "the time machine" when the traveller goes far into the future he's shocked at the condition of human kind. We don't need the time machine any more, we've arrived in that future

Superb talk. I wonder to what extent pop music and the three minute song was the beginning of the end for the attention span? Listening to a symphony seems totally beyond the majority of people in the world now.

I find it far more difficult to retain what I read on a screen than what I read in a book. I become possessive about books. Words on a screen vanish before they get time to sink in. I remember getting new school books as a child and enjoying the smell of newness as I flicked through the pages . All too neglected in the use of technology.

Great! Some things need to be 'read' from a paper page. The screen and/or audio is a very poor substitute under normal conditions. Generally, words are abused and talk is cheap on the internet (present company excepted).

There’s another side to the debate on reading long pieces, attention span etc. I get John Waters’ newsletter. I rarely read it all. I skim it. Mainly because he takes 3000 words to say what could be said in 1000. He obviously never learnt the art of economy of language. Less is more.

"Your imaginative capacity is flattened out"..... as I consume these interviews on youtube. lol I want to add that loneliness and boredom are drivers in consuming audio books, podcasts and along with the ability to jump around on the screen when one is 'reading' they meet an emotional need that is different from what is provided in real reading. Reading from the page is a completely different experience. We have hoovered up old paperbacks of the classics at our house, yellowed and brittle and requiring work to absorb. We are creating automatons (wink to John) with this destruction of personal growth through reading. We are creating easily propagandised populations.

Oh the women definetely know and always did know when we forgo their name after not seeng them for a spell, and have forgotten...the reason I know this, my first year of college, I was standing in the plaza, outside the school, speaking to a young woman I d went through High School with...A fellow walked by us, a boyfriend of someone else this girl and I went to High School with. The girl I'm talking tto says hellow to him. He replied "Baby Doll, what's up." the moment he was out of hear shot, she turned to me, laughed and" aand says: "He called me 'babydoll," because he forgets my name." And, of course, I'd go on to that to many women in the 20 years since.... That's two things i've been personally compelled tto share, out of the THREE we share.

John is obsessed with masks and vaccination . I support a lot of John's views but I think he is overboard about masks and vaccination . I think the Government had a reasonable approach towards Covid . I would criticise them for not acting faster and more decisively at the beginning in early March 2020 to protect nursing homes and to control travel .
@paintingtosser3814
@paintingtosser3814 Жыл бұрын
Maybe they should have been as decisive as China and sealed the doors of peoples' homes, so they could not get out and contaminate other people. Then they could have used the army and the security services, to go door to door and inoculate everyone, especially the deniers, who were spreading the virus like nobody's business. Food could have been delivered and people allowed out in their back gardens on rotation, so as to protect everyone. Lockdown hard for a better future. A sort of tough love
