Here, I analyse the School of Athens. Raphael's masterpiece. The context is everything, and the fact that the School of Athens formed part of the Pope's private library, and in fact was one of four frescos in the room gives us much more to unpick about its meaning and inspirations.

I watched this video to help with an AP Euro essay and damn I love this stuff. I think it is so interesting how beautiful artwork can be but still, represent education, architecture, and other intellectual arts.

Sorry for my ignorance. But is there a name for this particular branch of Renaissance, where there are many subjects, all of them minding their own business, scattered around the painting, something that Raphael was doing? Is it just called High Renaissance, or there is a different terminology. I am trying to create similar compositions in my photography, but set up. Thanks

More of a compositional style than "branch of Renaissance." Try Renaissance group paintings?

A must. I needed a review on this painting. Also there were some unknown issues: regarding the Cardinal Della Riviere and his identification with Julius Caesar; the symbols of Roman architecture over the Greek... Well, my analyses are not devoted to these typical key masterpieces but to less reviewed ones.

I've noticed on the bow above the figures of the painting (not sure exactly what it's called) there are repeated patterns of yellow swastika which I think was a symbol of fortune in ancient Greece.

3:52 the picture is from Knossos, belonging to minoan civilization of the island of Crete.It is greek but not the same architecture as Athens used to have in when Plato was alive.Also it is a different civilisation in a different time, with different people.

What about Hypatia staring directly to Raphael/the viewer ??? (White cloaked woman in the bottom left, next to Parmenides)
@tsak4066
@tsak4066 3 жыл бұрын
I was actually curious about this as well. Also about the figure on the right side of the painting looking directly to the viewer. The right figure I'm talking about is raphael himself and the one you are talking about originally was hypatia but changed because of the pope. So if you haven't find the answer and you are still curious here is the link that you can find information about each character of the painting: www.hellenicaworld.com/Greece/Science/en/SchoolAthens.html

Raphael painted himself in the right hand side. He also painted his bitter rival Michelangelo in the foreground, alone and brooding. Both of these men deserve to be in this painting.

Plato is drawn as none other than Raphael's idol. Leonardo Davinci, a close up into his face and you see it clearly as his famous facial drawings we have of him. He points upwards also as a known signature in many of Da Vinci paintings. See: John the Baptist. Michelangelo also is portrayed as Hiraclitus and is in a melancholy pose. Which was viewed as being deep thinker in high Renaissance. Raphael rounds out the Renaissance Holy Trinity. Right where he deserves to be. As equals.

It took hundreds of years for most of these men to be recognized as geniuses and immortalized in a Raphael painting. A modern painting with more contemporary figures would be controversial.

I found Raphael in the painting. And what a painting this is my word. I’m wanting to get a poster of it in my room so bad. The artist has, I’m guessing, placed himself on the right side when looking at the painting but it’s the left in person… on the bottom between two older mean conversing about the earth and heavens or planets nonetheless. Black Hair. And theirs only three people looking forward. The rest are preoccupied drawn idealising and gazing upon the two philosophers.

I have a hard time calling this Art. It seems to me the "artist" is just an illustrator of someone's (the patron's) propaganda. I see it as not much different to that old Soviet "triumph of the workers" imagery, and with as little artistic content. Yes, I know, some great art has been commissioned, but..
