While I was watching psycho pass I wanted nothing more than Makishima to succeed in his plans because I would not like to live in a society that is Entirely run and controlled by a computer system. The idea to be able to make a choice at free will is comforting even though free will may be a myth after all.

This was a great analysis of the first half of the season. Unfortunately, it looks like whoever wrote this didn't finish the season, because we discover that the Sybil System is neither objective nor a passive supercomputer. This analysis is a fantastic exploration of the world of Minority Report or similar stories, but not Psycho Pass (at least not Season 1). Still, the philosophy was incredibly interesting and worth the watch.
@cruzofabian
@cruzofabian 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, it got me thinking that maybe (and you have to stretch the idea quite a bit) the sybil system is a government, and maaaaybe a government is a computer (running really complex processes, with a really big number of processors called bureucrats) managing society. I have to side with the sybil system saying that the fact that it's just a bunch of people judging other people's psycho passes is irrelevant. Anyways, just a wandering thought.
@elmoglue
@elmoglue 4 жыл бұрын
But the Sibyl System is objective. The only way a person can join the Sibyl System is if they’re criminally asymptomatic which (accdg. to them) usually means they are a person that always observed from an outside perspective and can make judgements without emotion, bias, prejudice, etc. They have their own ideals which, when added to the Sibyl system, will help evolve and expand it’s understanding of the human mind. They’re the most objective they can be.

There's a huge difference between lifting your hand and making a huge decision like to commit a crime. Also as shown even in the series,the computer is far from being perfect. If we remove agency from people, we remove their resoonsibility as well. If we do something wrong,we have no one to blame but ourselves and it doesn't seem to me like a good idea to give up on all responsibility and leave it in hands of computer we don't control. I prefer to make 12 mistakes from which I can grow as a person and learn,rather than having a computer make 1 mistake for me.
@Dolly.956.
@Dolly.956. Жыл бұрын
I agree …I had a similar convo with a friend who told me he doesn’t really believe in free will… if you have free will …your responsible for your actions … but I think we have weak willed people and people scared of responsibility…so people take comfort in the idea that they don’t have control and that it’s not their fault for how they act or present themselves … people want comfort and safety over freedom and opportunities

To this video I'd like to quote one of my favorite anime: "Don't sell me short. It's more than that. I may have the instincts to act aggressively. But it's my own choices to follow them through that define what I am. Without those conscious decisions my body only has impulses that will quickly fade away" To know that my mind commands certain actions is fascinating. But my will determines whether I'll see those actions through. A system that punishes me for having those instincts even when I'm too young to act on them is a fundamentally broken one. A man without agency is not a man at all.

@MaRaX93
@MaRaX93 4 жыл бұрын
Its neither of those things, the premise is entirely unscientific and superficially philosophical. The whole show is about obeying authority, while anyone who is against sybil is shown as a sociopathic edgelord. One major loophole is also the fact that it implies criminally asymptomatic people are born that way, while saying that it has to do with their perception ethics, 2 contradictory statements. Also up until season 3, it didn't really paint a picture of the socio-economic landscape if the setting. Season 3 was a step towards the right direction though
@savage7882
@savage7882 4 жыл бұрын
@@MaRaX93 I wouldnt say its not scientific or realistic. It would be superficially philosophical if it had lost all touch with reality. Japan to some people may even actually look like this already. Ive heard from many people that a lot of japanese dont lock their homes at night because they trust the system and the police that much. Japanese citizens typically work so much that they essentially have no free time to themselves. Most young people are also painfully unaware of world history and events.
@MaRaX93
@MaRaX93 4 жыл бұрын
@@savage7882 But the main point here is that in the anime, a system somehow determines if you're a latent criminal at birth. This implies that everything is genetics, from your aptitudes to perform certain tasks to if you're capable of commiting crimes. That is utter unscientific bullshit, close to eugenics
@savage7882
@savage7882 4 жыл бұрын
@@MaRaX93 I agree with you on that. Not that I trust the Freudian model of psyche as science, but there is some arbitrary truth to it. One big part of your personality is influenced by your experiences and your parents when you grow up so the idea of criminals being developed at birth is insane

The issue with an all-knowing computer is that no system with a human hand is ever truly objective. There will always be some subjectiveness from the creator latent in the machine. For example, if a Nazi writes the programme for this thing, there would be a good probability that the machine may have some slight programming in which it treats anyone 'non-aryan' like crap. If you think this sounds far fetched, it was found that the algorithm in charge of scanning university applications for Oxford university had a preference for Christian/European names and thus discarded those without a recognisable name even if they were excellent potential students.
@lamarmcneil5655

That's why the algorithm of the Sybil system (spoiler alert) is completely based on the psychology of individuals without emotions who simply have a desire to control society. Therefore, the society is essentially ruled with a completely objective, emotionless iron-fist.

It should be noted that oxford application issue wasn’t intentional. Computers can have biases just as humans do. The centralized decision making is the issue as any mistake ruins the whole application.

@israfielvalhorn6460
@israfielvalhorn6460 6 жыл бұрын
Simple, the main problem was the first season. It set up the standard so high (like, masterpiece philosophical high), that the second season had to be a disappointment. There was action, yes, a few characters, but with half the number of episodes, it did not compensate and certainly was not as smart. While the first season was perfectly played out, the second felt like it HAD to exist because the fans asked for it. It was artificial, the thought was robotic and not actually smart... The second season is enjoyable, but it's cheap compared to the first season.

Exactly, standing on its own season 2 would have been good. Now, it's just ruining one hell of a brilliant story. Of course you don't have to watch it but still, it exists and that's a bad thing that they wasted time and money but not the same passion as in season 1. It's too bad really.

Brilliant job. More more more please. I must say, not every dystopia should be called Orwellian. For instance, in the section mentioning Orwell that then segued to its impact on art and music wasn't a salient point addressed in 1984. However, I do think Huxley has much to say about the world of Psycho-Pass. For comparison: the mention of art and music reminded me of a point in BNW's story when Watson, an Alpha frustrated looking to create art in a society that allowed no suffering, anxiety or emotion apart from joy expressed his frustrations to Mustapha Mond. Mond not only acknowledged this loss but then went on to argue considered it a reasonable trade-off. How is that not a brilliant parallel to Psycho-Pass? But seriously... can Jared do a segment just on explaining every reference made in Season 1?

I see freewill as necessary. People need to move through their lives as they choose as long as it doesn't harm others. But, unlike the main villain I believe that no one has the right to take another life. If one stands at that point; they should understand that they will have the same be done to them. a sort of code of conduct.

Not to be a dick, but you guys kinda almost completely ignored the positives the series show the system does. Not just crime rates, but health, housing, education, and just general happiness levels. Our main proraganist is against the system whenever it takes actions that does more harm than what she thinks is possible. Brutal efficiency, replaced with humane calculation. That is why she tries to spare criminals whenever possible, tries to advocate for kinder treatment of victims... not just "because big brother, therefore it be bad"... its genuinely seeing that the system should be improved to be kinder, rather than just thinking the system itself is the inherent problem.
@sircastic959

The System even recognizes that itself later on, somewhat atleast, when it offers Akane to join.
@jalioswilinghart
@jalioswilinghart 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly! We even see her idea of cleansing the system itself of more harmful internal elements in the ending of the 2nd season. I get some really dont like it, but its the most striking point of direct influence none the less.

@@jalioswilinghart The system is literally a hive-mind of psychopaths. How can that be improved?
@jalioswilinghart
@jalioswilinghart 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheSm1thers Not psychopaths. And it very easily can be improved. Our main proraganist convinces the system to get rid of several of its more brutal elements within said hivemind, in order to have the system become more humane. That's just one conversation. How can it not be improved? Already in the beginning of the show, we see that the public are garenteed a very high standard of living, not to mention such a low crime rate, that people cant even fathom the idea of crime being something to fear. So... even if it was "literally a hivemind of psychopaths", sure as hell seems like decent result regardless.

Well gee, maybe what we perceive as our consciousness is actually not it. Maybe our consciousness is that "black box" and we're just overcomplicating things
@QuinnArgo
@QuinnArgo 6 жыл бұрын
Eugene InLaw what we refer to as the black box describes the part of your mind you claim to not be actively aware of. It is not "the unconscious" though, that is an idea proposed by Sigmund Freud, not scientifically accurate and possibly wrong, but useful in psychology as it is a good model. The black box controls breathing, measuring, interpretation of the objects you see. Everything you can't claim to have control over. Like, you can hold your breath but there is something holding you back after your lungs are empty or how you have to blink after your eyes dry.
