Good video, thank you. I want to be a zoologist and I've been collecting roadkill. My family for a long while thought this was really weird, but I just saw it as a natural extension of my fascination for animals. Should also say though that reporting roadkill also helps because then scientists can look at where, how many, and what are being killed and see if they need to intervene.
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 3 жыл бұрын
I would have thought that schemes to provide other means for the local wildlife to cross safely like that are probably good for road safety for humans also. Not only are some animals big enough to go through a windshield with fatal consequences but there are more than a few crashes caused by drivers overreacting in an attempt to avoid animals if they spot them too. I once made the mistake of instinctively trying to avoid a critter only to get a hard lesson in why instinct is a bad driver, no accounting for the fact the road surface is slushy partly melted snow on top of a layer of ice just hit the brake and steer aggressively that will definitely work. Suffice to say it didn't and I narrowly avoided ending up in the 1.5m deep ditch cut by the brook next to the road probably only managed that as I actually took a course on skid recovery once that included practical training on a skid pan so I knew what to do right away. Considering that after recovering I stopped to see the tracks left by my front tires go within centimeters of the bank probably would have ended up with some unplanned time off at the very least otherwise as running into a ditch at 50mph is a sure-fire way to end up in the hospital whether the ward or the morgue is less certain.

I mean, it's understandable that your family is weirded out by your collection of roadkills😂
@alyssahansen1400
@alyssahansen1400 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelstephenvargas8821 Well to be honest I don't particularly understand their reasoning. They don't think taxidermy is weird, they aren't bothered by meat at the store and will even buy it to eat, they don't think it's weird to see a deceased specimen at a museum, they think hunting and fishing and trapping are good things, don't think dead butterfly collections are concerning, and when one of our pets dies we keep it in the house for a day so we may pet it and say our last goodbyes. All of those are interactions with dead animals that they don't think twice about, but if I bring roadkill home and bury it until the soft tissues are decayed so I can keep the bones they think I'm going to be a serial killer lol.

Makes me sad how common road kill is to the point scientists can study it. I know sometimes weird shit happens and it can’t be avoided, but I wonder how many of these incidences were deliberate? Because I’ve seen people driving on OPEN ROAD, no traffic or hazard and they’ll plow right over a critter, make zero effort to pause or go around it. The only time people like this seem to care about stopping is when the animal is large enough to cause considerable damage to their car if struck, which I think is disgustingly selfish.

At first I was to comment about how off putting it was to see you be glad of the fact that animals are being killed unnecessarily, because their deaths can be used for science/data collection; then before you ended the video (1:53) you addressed the issue, and I do kinda get where you're coming from; and I'm glad that you addressed it before ending the video! Keep up the good work! (Still, I wish there was road-kill prevention of sorts so that living beings don't die unnecessarily)

Bats don't always avoid cars. One night, several years ago, we were returning home after camping. I heard a slight thud and thought a leaf had hit the windshield. As I looked, it turned out to be a bat, and it had gotten stuck in the windshield wiper. There wasn't any good place to pull over to stop, but as we drove, it managed to extricate itself and flew off. Weird but true.

No way! Great video. I've always wondered and worried about the ecological impacts of cars on local wildlife populations. But I'm sure this effect has been studied. Besides incentivizing more people to live in cities I wonder what more could be done to protect wildlife, or is it even a cost worth investing in preventing? Good video planet earth friends.

Rooks often cooperate when eating roadkill. One keeps a lookout for cars, the rest eat. And then they change roles. They even know what side of the road danger may come from, the basically knows about driving rules. I have seen that myself. One eating, another in top of a lamp post shouting out when a car approaced. Then the eating rook would slowly walk away from the road. They ignored me.

I'm surprised armadillos freeze. At a nature preserve hiking trail I frequent, there are often wild armadillos visible from the hiking trail. Only a couple of times have I messed with them. If you make noises in the grass they are surprisingly quick and basically jump like cats
