This guy (the singer)is mad. I can see it in his eyes. And this was and is so rich in punkrock: every mad person is able to declare his or herself as a singer or leader of a punkrockband.

Damn! I actually pulled over to the side of the road to watch & hear this legendary, amazing band/song. I had my windows down & was obeying the instruction at the start of this video...”PLAY AT HIGH VOLUME!” Someone walked up to my car & asked “what the fuck are you listening to?!” So I screamed really loudly. That was the correct answer, after all. I love The Screamers so much! Their music gives me Vertigo. The guy in the red shirt is a great target just standing there. Gives me the creeps. Maybe he was in shock and awe?!

don't know about morrissey, but Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys got his act from Tomata. Tomata was basically the first hardcore punk frontman

@@jah4204 I know. Jello was a giant screamers fan. there is footage on youtube of him attending a screamers concert and jumping on stage to help tomata with mic problems, but the band doesn't really understand what he is doing and chase him off stage. edit: though it should also be added that 1. Biafra and du Plenty come from a similiar backround of acting/performance art, Tomata specificcally having a history in drag performance and Jello afaik having some backround in acting 2. it's not like Tomata is the sole innovator of incorporating performance art and elements of stage-acting into musical performance. Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, countless other less influential punk frontman, Alan Vega of Suicide, even Freddy Mercury to an extend etc. all have done very similar things well before tomata and it would be reasonable to assume that he saw at least some of them live and got inspired by that, especially considering that he was in new york during the early phase of that punk scene. I don't know if there are any sources for that out there, but I wouldn't be surprised if The Screamers were mainly influenced by Suicide, especially the more traditionally punk sounding early stuff like Ghost Rider.

Yeah, I’ve only ever read/heard Biafra speak of Tomata & The Screamers in near-reverential terms. I’m sure would’ve fallen all over himself to put out a Screamers record on Alternative Tentacles if he’d had a chance.

Eh not quite.... the West Coast had a distinct sound but there's lots of early stuff that was extremely influential on hardcore and now sounds quite similar to what we call hardcore. Bad brains always said the first hardcore song was Screamin Fist by the viletones who were a classic Toronto punk band. There's Out of Vogue - The Middle class, Raggare/Stranglers by the Rude Kids(early swedish punk that is definitely hardcore) their album safe society from early 1979 is a good one for first hardcore LP, the first Belgian punk record is by a band called Chainsaw and they sound like LA Hardcore. X Pulsions song Castration is definitely early hardcore from 77, there was the swedish 7" called Krossa by the end, LA from 77 crime and punishment by the Desmonds, The NO EXIT live Lp from Vancouver BC is a classic early hardcore LP, Hubble Bubble had some hardcore songs like Pogo Pogo, the buzzcocks had you tear me up which was a huge influence on discharge. Japan had the band SS who were classic, hardcore didn't just appear on 1980 tons of bands were already working on those sounds. The screamers definitely contributed though. Oh the urinals also had some hardcore stuff... this is just off the top of my head.. Oh also I couldn't forget the Hitler SS/Tampax Split with Slave being a classic early hardcore punk song.

Who sez punk needed guitar, the idea behind punk was to break away from the norm no matter what it took just to get your music out there. Guitar? I'll bet you listen to Zep.

@@billyodamit8062 right? The Screamers and Suicide are in my opinion two of the most punk bands precisely because they lack the traditional rock instumentation. tho with the screamers the synthesizers sound very close to guitars sometimes. Mindless Self Indulgence would be an example of a more modern band that does similar things.
