I wipe a candle across the threads of my wood worm screw, or when using a Ruth Niles wine stopper screw. It really helps when removing a piece of wood from those screws.

I always seem to forget about a screw Chuck I’m in the process now of turning a 12 inch wing bowl that would’ve been better as a screw chuck instead of a face plate but it is what it is. I’ll just have to keep turning as always another excellent video that you’ve done

I use glue blocks with hot glue very often. They all have a tenon and just fit into my chuck.

Sam, you demonstrated how to use both types of chucking. And it was all good information. Especially the size and types of screws to use when setting up a face plate. However I don't think you really addressed why you would use a face plate instead of a screw chuck, or vice versa. Is it because of the size of the work piece? Or maybe it's weight? Or perhaps it's the type of material? Still, thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Glen, I went back and scanned the video a bit. I think you're right. I did not make it clear WHY I would use one over the other. However, I did find some areas that I did at least mention why I would use one over the other. At 8:50 into the video I showed my largest faceplate that I would use on a really big burl. Do I need to mention that I would not start this with a screw chuck. At 1:00 in I mentioned that I will start a project with a screw chuck if I can. It is safe, quick, and I can take the project on/off the lathe. At 10:00 in to the video I talked about attaching a faceplate to a glue block. (This would assume I am not using or recommending a screw chuck. I continue at 11:15 in and showed gluing a waste block to a hollow form blank. In the future I will be more clear on what I am saying. I do quite a bit of segmenting work, and use faceplates instead of scroll chucks. Depending on the project, I may have 3 or 4 faceplates in use as a I build the various sections of the piece. I don't use wood screws ... instead, I use 1-1/4" #12 sheet metal screws.

Hi Sam, Thanks for making this! Any pros and cons between the woodworm screw and the dedicated screw chucks? As you said, the woodworms seem to come with the chucks, for someone who has several of those I'm trying to see where the dedicated screw chucks would be an advantage. Is it just so you aren't tying up a chuck? Thanks! Dan

Dan I think all you could need is a worm screw and not a dedicated screw chuck. Usually I just use the same chuck that I have the worm screw in so it really does not tie up a chuck. The worm screw can be a little too big in diameter for some project. But you can just make your own screw chuck. Sam
