The Hard Up Hiker

The Hard Up Hiker

Күн бұрын

In a break in our usual programming, and to have some fun at the expense of this expensive Trangia Fuel Bottle Trend, I detail my Holy Grail search for the perfect bioethanol/meths alcohol fuel bottle (that doesn't cost £20!). Recycled or reused even better....for the planet and your wallet!
So here in the gameshow format is 'Would I Leak For You' or 'Fuelseye' or 'Whose Bottle Is It Anyway...who will be Fuely's Special Prize and win the contest?
I have gone completely mad, yes....
The 100 Mile trip will return next week or later this week, I couldn't face finishing the edit of Day 3 this week, that's the difficult arduous one, as you will see....so here's something more fun.

Three words: Fiji Water bottle. Smallest height to volume ratio. The 500ml takes up barely any more space than the 300ml Trangia fuel bottle.

Great observations. I spent years using recycled bottles for meths but after many leaks and spills grudgingly forked out for some Trangia fuel bottles . After 20 years they are still going strong. They deliver a measured amount of fuel, don't get lost because of the bright red colour and resist damage despite my misuse. On reflection probably worth the £1.20 a year although to be fair the travel listerene bottle has worked for me on short day trips.

I have been using one of the small travels bottles with standard screw-on cap for the last 4 years with no issues. For larger amounts of fuel, I have a lemon juice bottle (not the lemon shaped variety) with the shaker insert removed.

Great video! Loved the humour and very informative. Also a alcohol stove user myself and use bioethanol. I only use meths if i'm desperate and haven't got any bioethanol. I use a methylated spirit container for my bioethanol. 500ml and it has the safety cap. I usally keep my fuel bottle in a large sandwich type bag in case it does leak one day.

I use herbicide concentrate containers for the stove meths for longer trips. I like the form factor of those containers (about 90mm Wx 30Dx140T for the 250ml) for packing. Yates make 200ml, 250ml and 500ml at least here in Australia. They have a childproof screwtop and are embossed "NOT TO BE TAKEN". Best of all, they have a clear 5,10,15 and 20ml graduated measuring tube that clips onto the bottle. I haven't had one leak while being carried or after being dropped. I also use them for long-term storage. For overnighters, I carry alcohol fuel in a 120ml isopropyl alcohol hand sanitiser bottle. They come in a huge range of shapes and sizes and the screw-on lids are usually interchangeable with other containers, so you choose between a flip cap or a full childproof screwtop. In the past i've tried glue containers with a long neck. They invariably leaked or burst. I even tried those foil pouch type waterbottles which are like an upsized version of those that some juices and yogurts come in. They reacted with methylated spirit, bubbled and leaked.
@harduphiker
@harduphiker 2 ай бұрын
Interesting you tried the glue containers and they failed, others have recommended those. I wouldn't trust a pouch. Herbicide concentrate containers - will keep an eye out for those, if they have them here. I guess with meths it doesn't matter, it's a bit toxic anyway. I personally would worry about the old herbicide leeching into the bioethanol and then becoming fumes.... Since I've made this video I've successfully used hand gel bottles (yup, agreed, work great), mouthwash and the Bananaboat bottles and none of those leaked... I think squirty bottles are easiest to dispense the fuel, unless you have a measuring cap. Normal caps like mouthwash it tends to spill a little when you pour. Whereas the pump bottles as shown here were a big no in practice, they went eveywhere.

I have made up a couple of Romanian/Swedish mess kit hybrids for friends and have included these as fuel bottles. The only downside is the screw cap should you be concerned about spillage. Isopropyl alcohol bottles are great, some old cold medicine bottles, small mouthwash bottles. Hard to find good heavy duty bottles & l don’t like safety caps. I’ve had some old fuel bottles get brittle & crack. I keep my fuel bottles in a outside pocket of my pack away from everything in case they leak. The best fuel in Canada is Methyl Hydrate & very poisonous ☠️ so I don’t want it all over my cook kit if something happens.

Yep, fair enough. I assume you mean sigg fuel bottles not water bottles. As they are intended for fuel I expect them to be coated or possibly anodised inside. I'm just speaking from personal experience, I have had raw aluminium "pinholed" from alcohol. However, I did a bit of reading on the subject, and there seems to be a lot of variables, such as temperature (we get a lot in Australia) and water content of the alcohol. Anyway I do like aluminium for petroleum based fuel. Also, my problem may have occurred by storing alcohol in raw aluminium rather than temporarily using for hiking &c. I found this video while looking for ideas for saving money, repurposing discarded items. Just wanted to pass on my experience. As your question has reminded me about this topic, I've just emptied a tomato sauce bottle, one of those with a pointy twist top. I'm going to try that, it should eliminate the need for a funnel, and it's bright red too.

I was thinking of using a small aluminium bottle, so would be intrigued to find out more about this alcohol corroding aluminium thing. It does occur to me that quite a few alcohol burners are aluminium. All the DIY/MYOG ones are either made from aluminium drinks cans, or food cans (sometimes steel but often aluminium). Admittedly these homemade stoves are not intended to be long lasting, but one of Goshawk’s siphon stoves is aluminium. The aluminium could be treated/coated…I wouldn’t know.
