Question for the Brits: What are council estates? Are they provided free to those needing financial assistance?
@andyjudge80385 жыл бұрын
@@B_Bodziak A council estate is housing that is run by and owned the local government council, if you need housing you are put on a waiting list for a property, if you are in employment you just pay the rent with no deposit if not working then you get housing benefit that pays the rent, the rent is much cheaper than a private rent and the waiting list can be weeks to months to over a year depending on the area. Lots of nice people live on these estates but they also have a higher number of low life dick heads that ruin it for other people living there

One year for Xmas my son requested a TV for his room, he was 14 yrs old at the time and we teased him about how we never had such privileged things when we were growing up and there was nothing wrong with watching TV as a family so he probably wasn’t going to get his own exclusive TV. We had no issue with him having a TV, we were basically trying to throw him off track so it would be more of a surprise. That year, as a parent I received the shocker of all shockers, my son was a brat! LoL He was surprised by the gift but as he looked at the box he had the nerve to tell us that we hadn’t listened to him and the TV wasn’t big enough! This upset me at first but I decided not to get angry but teach him a lesson instead. I called our local homeless shelter, explained my story and asked if my kids could help serve dinner that evening and I also wanted to provide a donation as well. I told my kids to get in the car without telling them our destination. My daughter did nothing wrong and this wasn’t meant to be a punishment anyway, I just felt it was time my kids knew how well they lived compared to some. They were not happy at first but they served dinner to a couple hundred ppl that night and afterwards I asked them to fix a plate of food for themselves and I wanted them to spend 15 mins at each table and strike a conversation so they would know other ppl’s stories. My son was very quiet on the drive home and when we pulled into our driveway he burst into tears. I was hoping that he was crying bc the experience touch him but it went even beyond that. He met with 2 of his schoolmates that were living in the shelter and the sad part is that they begged my son not to tell the other kids at school, it was heartbreaking. My son told me he was sorry about the TV and it was perfect for him room. Then he asked a favor of me, he wanted to know if he could do his homework at the shelter a couple nights a week and could I drive him there. He wanted those 2 boys to trust that he had their backs (his words) and how could I possibly say no to that. They’d get their homework done, eat gummy worms and sometimes play board game and they became lifelong friends through the experience. I loved this episode of the Secret Millionaire bc the father was trying to teach his son a similar lesson. 👍🏼😊

One paycheck away from being homeless and I can't be half modest as this man.. Once in a while you come across people who gives you hope to be a better person.. Today is such day..

Wow those two guys were awesome, and they got so emotional helping people. They are so kind. It's so kool the son wanted to keep working at the hostel, he was mature and kind and not arrogant and spoilt like alot of rich kids, his dad was bubbly and also not arrogant, he and his son was so kind to help all those people, and organisations.

They are all just amazing people, the millionaires and the poor people in the community.

It's SUCH a great thing when these millionaires give back. They make such a huge difference to these depressed areas, and setting a new course in the lives of weary, almost hopeless, people. The man and his son are not only making others' lives better, but their own as well. Hopefully, this inspires others to do what they can for people who are less fortunate than they. Even a little bit helps a lot. Also, it is good that they go and live with the people they hope to help.

I watched this maybe a hear ago and really was touched by Ben's slow transition from slightly traumatized by the new environment and then moving from paralyzed to proactive . I must admit having grown up in a working class and somewhat dysfunctional family environment I would still find it not easy to have to work with troubled youth who have had it much worse than I have; and I would have to adapt to it myself. But Ben was coming from an entirely different universe. He grew so much in that short period. My hat off to him and for his great father for raising such a good kid. I promised myself this time, 'no tears'; but seeing these forgotten young men, and struggling people, getting the help from those kind people in the community, it got to me again.

You also have hands, eyes, ears, a nose taste and speech. Many blessing to you and yes there's so much more to life than money. We are learning to grow food, make soap, you name it. Then, eventually. Give back when we can. We also plan to adopt and change the life of one, maybe two children. We don't have a ton of money either, but wr have knowledge that can not be taken away.
