Auntie Shrew is such a wonderful character. When she's first introduced she's painted as a nosy old gossip, but she actually acts as a sort of mother to everyone in the field and just wants to protect them. And I love how she acts here. She could have easily just left Mrs. Brisby, or rescued her and left the plow, but instead sha goes the full length and stops the plow before rescuing Brisby. And to top it all off, she didn't rub her nose in it. She could have nagged Brisby about what a horrible idea it was and how it didnt change anything. But she didnt--she scolded Brisby for crying and that was it. She dropped the issue and even said WE'LL think of something, refusing to allow Brisby to take everything on her shoulders. She's an incredibly well written character in a fairly minor role.

Agreed. She is a busy body type, but I'm glad they fortified that with an actual backbone and genuine will to act if needed. Good characters should be written in those terms, not all bad and not all great but with real character. Justin is another good example he's a really good hero type but he's a little immature which gives him a good arc because he must be a true leader now that Nicodemus is gone

Very well put. Glad to see her character recognized. This animated shrew is written with more depth and dimension than many characters in live-action movies. She's the MVP of the field, with an abrasive exterior, a spine of steel, and a heart of gold.

That's a very interesting point. This movie depicts Farmer Fitzgibbons not as a bad man or villain but as someone who's just doing his job, without really considering the harm it does to the wildlife that lives on his field.

It's really interesting how they would switch between mouse-like movements and the more anthropomorphized bipedal ones for the characters animation, like when Mrs Brisby went up the rock to investigate the sounds of the tractor. Most movies seem to just pick one style and stick pretty rigidly to it, but in this movie we see both styles of character animation in play for the animal characters, and it's quite well done.

@@twoeightythreezOne thing I also liked about this movie is that they knew when to play the Jerry goldsmith score and when to have it shut the hell up. For example, in the scene where Mrs. Brisby met Jeremy the crow, they had it silent. There’s an uncertainty of whether there’s a scary scene coming up or a funny moment, and have goofy background music playing would completely ruin that.

When I was a kid, I thought Auntie Shrew was rude when she responded with Jonathan was not there, and scolded her for crying. Would someone run a tractor through a field with so much wildlife? Also, is it even certain that a plow wouldn't get damaged running over a cinderblock?
@YankeeCountess
@YankeeCountess 2 жыл бұрын
For farmers whose livelihood depends on plowing their fields for corn, soybeans, and other crops, yes they would (and even those of us who don't live near farming communities, we forget how much we depend on the produce farms offer). However, as you saw, a majority of wildlife would run/fly away as soon as the noise of the machine started. As for the cinderblock damaging the plow, I suppose it would depend on how deep it was buried in the ground, as well as how old the plow blades are. Of course, at the end of the day, this is all being done for dramatic effect to make the story/movie that much more thrilling because of the "impending doom"

Like yes, she tried to take on the tractor for the love of her child that she couldn’t leave behind BUT when the moment finally happen for her to take action, she froze cause is her instincts as a mouse kicking in. Even Auntie Shrew have to remind her later on that she need courage to face her fears so she can save Timothy when Brisby was originally against talking to the Great Owl since she is a mouse and specifically say owls eat mice. And from there on, she start facing these challenges to finally be brave and overcome her fear in the end to where she no longer is afraid of the unknown when she escape the farmer’s house, speaking out against the villain to the other rats so they can be saved, facing a sinking mud hole and then using the magical necklace that she has no understanding of but causes her harm, to save her family all on her own.

@@bms3928 I got nothing against Ralph Macchio (Karate Kid & Cobra-Kai actor and voice of Timmy) and Debbie Mae West (Metal Gear Solid actress and voice actress of Elizabeth Brisby succeeding late Elizabeth Hartman). The problem is someone just wanted to make a quick cash grab off the name. And while the original children's novel made sequels, it was nothing like the animated sequel had portrayed. It's like no one bothered to read the books at all.

Much more sadder than this. What's more sad to me is the the voice actor of Teresa is gone. Just like Prue that angered Piper in which I'm devastated by Holly's best friend's death. The actress died. So as Prue due to a grey demon guy that this wasn't supposed to happen like as end up like.

(Spoiler alert). Anyone knows mice can't do that in reality pull the hoses & stuff off a tractor while its running. & a disc plow can't dig down that deep, At least not a foot, not on the first pass anyways. I do like the movie anyways.

No, NIMH are the only human villains in the movie. They knowingly subjected animals to torture for scientific research, and then they tried to exterminate the NIMH rat colony as a coverup. The farmer's just a normal, hardworking man who has a job to do and provide for his own family. He doesn't know about the animal world underneath him, and besides the rats of NIMH were causing problems for him.
