Learn the story of the WWII student resistance group, called the White Rose, fighting against Hitler in Nazi Germany.
--
In 1943, Allied aircraft rained tens of thousands of leaflets on Nazi Germany below. The leaflets urged readers to renounce Hitler, to fight furiously for the future- and to never give up hope. Their call to action rippled through homes and businesses- and their message even reached concentration camps. They were signed: the White Rose. Iseult Gillespie details the story of the resistance group.

It takes incredible strength to say “this is wrong” when nearly everyone is telling you otherwise. By listening to that pit in your stomach, that initial seed of doubt, you can bring even the most manipulative of lies crumbing down by knocking out their fundamentally weak foundations. Scepticism let’s you forge your own path to the truth, because the truth is never afraid of questions, it embraces them.

Lord ozunu dumber than assuming it came form a god that came from nothing? In fact why assume nothing is the default, given everywhere we look we can find “something”, even in the most perfect vacuum there is energy in the form of random fluctuations across all of the quantum fields. There is no place you can point to and say “that is nothing”. So maybe “something” is more likely or stable than nothing, in fact, theres no evidence that a “nothing” has ever existed. It might even be impossible for “nothing” to exist.

I was very fortunate to meet the last surviving member of the White Rose. She was the girlfriend of Hans Scholl and best friends with Sophie Scholl. When Hans and Sophie were arrested this person went to their apartment, (she had a key) upon learning they were arrested and did her to hide whatever evidence she could find. After that, she got on a train to Ulm, Germany to notify the parents of the Scholls because the authorities were not doing that. If you care to hear more about this feel free to message.

I am not really a religious person nor patriotic, but I do admire such a selfless act of heroism. These heroes give their everything to open a path for the betterment of humanity, but they never really see their dream comes true. It is a pity that we humans often find courage only after we see these heroes sacrificed. We can only pay them by remembering their sacrifice and make our own contribution to the betterment of humanity. May they rest in peace.

@@bekirhadziomerovic5679 image of Swastika is acceptable as long as it is presented in a way that defies nazism rather than support it. Take a closer look at 1:17 - 1:28. The flag is raised then lowers, then he drops it from his hand. Also at 3:50 you can the swastika has an X over it.

They are actually pretty well known and admired as a moral example to look up to in Germany today, with books, movies, and memorials about them, and streets and schools named in their honor. I agree it's a shame their story isn't more celebrated elsewhere around the world, though.

We have a very short paragraph about them in school but I remember that the teacher highlight that it was their Christian faith that encourage them to not believe in all of this propaganda. So I always like to use them as a positive example of why faith is a good thing and that the teaching of tolerance, benevolence and abnegation are a good thing to tell from a young age. Beautiful animation as always! Thank you so much for all of your hard work, you are my favorite channel on KZfaq.

Student protest to the undemocratic activities of govts is a tale as old as time and I thank to all those brave heroes who stood up and fight for people of country and future generations instead of getting in line to kiss the assess of repressive leaders, which would have been so easy to their benefits in life, education and wealth! Nowadays some democratic countries leaders lable poor student unions fighting for justice of others as "communist, non patriotic, traitors, national threat etc etc" just cause they know students have power to overthrow the repressive regimes! And many gullible people fall for those tactics and listen to their masters. Long live democracy and long live dissent against oppression.

I'm sick of people praising the animation and neglecting the gravity of the actual content. The white Rose was a rather small organization, but not because most germans were unconditional supporters of the regime, but rather because the system they were fighting was so incredibly powerful, controlling and omnipresent. Which is why their bravery and sacrifice can and should be admired for all time

"Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter if through us thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?" Sophie's words hit me from the first time I read them. Their sacrifice and bravery should not be forgotten and wasted; we need to watch for the warning signs of history repeating itself again. It is empowering to remember that even when the government and public are determined to close their eyes to the injustice they cause, there were and always will be individuals who will stand up for what is good and right.

And in this perilous political climate, when the Hearts and Minds of our youth are in peril from lack of proper education, a proper historical perspective (our forefathers who fought against Fascism and Nazism have almost all died off so they can't teach the youth from personal experience), vacuous mass media "entertainment" and being brainwashed because they don't know any better, it is VERY HEARTENING to see that people like you, at TED-ed, care and take the time to provide such historical perspective. I hail you and praise you and THANK YOU form the bottom of my heart, KUDOS to you!
