This was actually helpful. I automatically started thinking "ok so now I need a flash." However, it was amazing to see how changing the angle and matching the brightness of the background made a huge difference. Thanks!

Yup. THIS was the one mystery I didn’t understand on why some of my photos were amazing and others were muddy and too much shadows in the eye sockets. Changing the direction transformed my photos. I think back on what was behind me on the great photos and I remember the open sky concept; a hill with neutral grass reflecting light back on them; a wide open lake… The lake one dumbfounded me the most because in my mind I thought “lake in background=amazing photos but they were terrible!!! But turning my couple away from the lake filled in all the shadows on their faces and they really popped!

I got my first camera when I was in jr. high, over 30 years ago and I'm still an amateur. Every time I think I've got photography concepts figured out, my camera makes an idiot out of me. People ask me to take photos, they think I'm an expert because I've always got my camera, and sometimes I get a few good shots, but ultimately I feel like a fool because I miss focus or exposure so often. I've taken workshops, online tutorials, watched youtube videos, joined facebook groups, I even took a photography class in college but I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm just not good at photography. I watched this video, as I do with lots of videos and got excited to try it out. Hopefully I'll be back for more content, you do a great job on presentation.

Hello Katelyn i hope your well, i watched your video, one simple question: wouldn’t an on camera flash solve this problem easily ? It wouldn’t matter which way she stood or which way she faced, what do you say on this, your advise would be highly appreciated, thanks in advance.

This is the type of light I choose to shoot in all the time. You actually can’t have great backlighting without secondary light. If you really struggle with this the starter course is an amazing resource.
