The Secret to Idaho Classic Cars and Why They Don't Rust Like They Do In Other Places

Having lived in ID (Idaho) nearly all my life, it's nothing to see classic cars and trucks going all the way back to the 20's still driving on the roads around here and as you will see in this video.... the secret to why they last so long has to do with our climate (high plains desert) and the volcanic sand that Yellowstone left behind every time it erupted. Around here we didn't salt the roads, we used this instead, and its natures terry-cloth towel that helps keep those classics dry, so they don't rust away like they do in other places.
Don't get me wrong... we still get rust, but not nearly as bad as other areas and because of that, most of these old classic cars have survived the test of time and are still in use to this day.

The sand is awesome! Hate to hear ya'll going to be getting salt, we don't get alot of snow here but they salt the heck out of the roads when we do, so we have a mix of unrusty and rusty cars here in Kentucky.

I hear ya man..... luckily it's only the cities that are doing "right now". They claimed it was cheaper to truck that in than it was to clean up the sand in the spring..... but since they started doing it, they raised city taxes to pay for the salt. Funny they didn't have to raise taxes when they where using sand.... ug.

One heck of a learning story....but I'm wandering why Idaho is going to start using salt...did all the ash sand run out?...I enjoyed the education from this video..thank you for sharing BareRose

Thanks One 62! I think it has to do with the draw backs of it. For one, there's rock in it so around here Glass Insurance on your car is a must (esp a classic ultra expensive windshield). In fact, the honest windshield repair guys here will Temp Fix your windshield and tell you to wait until April to replace it. When we get our (normal) only rain in the spring it washes the sand off the roads. But in the cities.... they have to sweep it off. So, I think that is the reason they are trucking it in now. They don't have to sweep it off in the spring. Salt just goes away..... along with your cars & trucks... lol.

I'll bet ya I know the guy you are talking about.... lol. He's up by Cody WY (the east side of Yellowstone) and has a HUGE classic junkyard over there. His son moved to my town and if I buy anything from him, he just charges me the diesel so he can visit his dad... lololol. If it's the same guy, he's a GREAT guy. WY is a lot like ID just smaller.

In Missouri we used to use bottom ash from coal fired power plants. The EPA said it was a hazard. Now the ash is buried and salt is used. Dumb.

Sad what they do in all that. Here in the cities they are trucking in Salt from Utah, because they claimed it's cheaper than sweeping the sand in the spring.... if it was cheaper to truck in salt, then why did they all raise City Taxes for the salt? Yeah...... there is a lot of reasons I bought land in County not City..... lol.

I wish they would go back to using what they had like that. Here in the cities they've started to truck salt in from UT as well. County still uses sand though.

I picked up this 68’ Coronet. Same situation. Ash packed in the framerails. I took out the floorpan to replace it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZqahcyc0L60dKc.html The cars next door in Spokane, Wa are really solid too! We are blessed! Great lesson! 😃

Avoid any used Minnesota, Wyoming, North Dakota and or any Midwest vechiles as MOST of them are rusted AF and some people who sell them try too mask them them from the inside out with some bondo filler and paint! I highly recommend you do a thorough and major examination and inspection of your used vehicle and or have a mechanic as well as an auto body repair expert do an an unbiased inspection on your vehicle regardless of where you buy as it could save you from buying a total lemon 🍋 and or rust belt beater! If you're aware of the rust just buy it as it but don't let people RIP you OFF!!!

Very true. Here we get a lot of cars and trucks from the Salt Lake area of UT. They are TOTAL JUNK for obvious reasons. 10 year old pickups that the beds literally fall off due to the rust. As for WY, I'm still getting good stuff out of Cody WY (NW corner of the state) but it's a rare exception, the rest of the state is a crap-shoot for sure. Also, here in ID the bigger cities started to truck in Salt from UT back in the 90's because it's cheaper to clean up in the spring. Sand has to be swept up when the snow melts. Counties still use sand because it's cheaper though, and it's usually out in the county that you find these old cars and trucks that don't get driven in the winter anymore.

@@BareRoseGarage Minnesota is the absolute worst at least in the Midwest if it was driven in the winter months and not meticulously washed everywhere including the frame and underbelly of the carriage it's going too be rusted out AF as Minnesota loves too dump TONS of salt 🧂 all over their roads mix that in with the snow and slush and watch ⌚ your vechiles rust away from the inside out!!!
