Put a c stand knuckle on the end of the arm and put a baby pin in the knuckle, positioning the pin vertically, then the head can sit on "top" of the pin, instead of pointing out to the side... voila! With a c stand knuckle and baby pin in your kit, you can use any brand flash head on any boom type arm, and never worry about the very annoying sag.

the reason you are having trouble with that light stand is that you're using it wrong. light goes on a pigtail in the clamp on the other end of the boom, not using gripping friction of the light mount itself on boom arm. video tutorial on C-stands was useful to me. otherwise, nice tips on your lighting arrangement.

is this warm light or daylight? i get really confused which is more flattering for a model. i was always under the impression fluorescent lighting was really unflattering however that seems to be the most common type of softbox/umbrella lighting.

Actually, this is called clamshell lighting because you have light above and below like an open clamshell towards the model < Butterfly lighting has only the one light above with no fill..
@agoniavr
@agoniavr 9 жыл бұрын
That's what he said, he just filled it at the end to produce a better portrait(as he stated) but speaking of buttefrly lighting he called so the one just before he introduced the fill :)
@AaronAubreyPhoto
@AaronAubreyPhoto 9 жыл бұрын
AndreCorner he said the second part of butterfly lighting is 'eliminating the shadow underneath the chin' but in doing so he also fills the shadow under her nose which is what is required for it to be 'butterfly light' he also said that you'll normally use the fill, which is in turn, clamshell lighting.

Aaron Aubrey Oh ok I missed that part then. That being said I think it's more important to learn the concept than the common name of it but nice pointing that out :)
@lifeindenvero5p
@lifeindenvero5p 8 жыл бұрын
+Aaron Aubrey Actually, it's called paramount lighting if you want to be technical. The name of the lighting style is driven by where the shadow of the nose falls on the face, not the configuration of the lights, though they go hand in hand. Adding a reflector for fill doesn't change where the shadow falls. This is important, because simply setting up lights in a "clamshell" configuration does not produce the desired shadow if the light is at the wrong angle or not high enough etc. Therefore, it's the shadow that you need to be looking at to gauge your light placement. "Clamshell" is not really a lighting style, because it's still paramount lighting. Without that shadow in place you aren't achieving paramount, butterfly, or clamshell lighting technically.

There is a butterfly shadow, and he is using just one active light source, a slightly contrasty one. The reflector is a fill, which is ok. Had he used two active diffuse soft boxes, one above and one below, that would be a clamshell setup, and there might not be the butterfly shadow.

I'm in the market to buy some lights to start my portrait studio work and studies and I have two questions regarding this video. First: when you shoot in studio or do portraits isn't it better to have cold lights opposed to this warm yellowish one? I really LOVE the result of the portrait at the end but it's just something I wonder. I don't know if it's something that's in my mind or if it has some reasoning behind it but when I check photoshoots with a lot of lights and work behind it most of the time it's cold ones. Not saying the one in the video is bad or wrong or anything, I'm simply asking when should you pick the cold ones and when should you pick the warmer ones like this(even though you also have the mood and personal preference factors to take into account). Second: which light would you suggest for someone starting like me to have couple of options? I don't want a 2000$ light like the pros get but I'm willing to spend a bit more than the cheap options because I want something to study with and that lasts producing great results(and when the light is not powerful you can tell it by the amateurish look of the outcome). I want to learn studio portrait techniques and thought about starting with a 3 light setup but I've seen so many great videos with just one light, including this one, that I should just get a good, strong and quality big single light to modify with the reflectors I already have to start improving my studio work. So, what's some good brands and models? I'd love something like in this video where you have the "mounts" to change making it a beauty dish or something else to have a little more control considernig you're working with a single light and reflectors.

***** Thanks for the info! I'll check them out, meanwhile I got my first speedlite(TTL/HSS) to experiment with a portable light stand and 109cm umbrella and I'm happy with it! Still looking for studio lights though and your suggestion seems great :)

AndreAgonia If you really want “cheap” but effective, just buy one or two flash units from the same camera brand and just learn to shoot TTL. Even with TTL, you can still have infinite lighting possibilities.

For some reason the shadow never looks like a butterfly to me..After all these years i have looked at that shadow and created it so many times i just dont see a butterfly. I see a shadow thats shaped like a wide "V" but never see the butterfly lol..Is it a certain image of a butterfly that everyone is referring to or something?

i would say it likes grey in the pictures because the light is on the model and don't give much light behind her, so white becomes grey. I could be wrong.
@agoniavr

That's what I alwasy wonder when seeing great one light studio work on white/light grey backdrops becoming sick blacks or dark greys with amazing depth. ***** explained it well but if you think about it it's just like if you underexposed your picture a lot. Your subject's face would be lit a little but the rest would be black cause it's far :)
