I'm obsessed with the history of Great Britain. It's really awesome. All of my ancestors are from Scotland and Ireland! Badass, hard working, strong, good people. My grandparents from Ireland were hard. Especially my grandmother. She was really tough. We knew she loved us but she never really said so. She was a good old braud.

Back in 1971 I was serving in the US Navy on the USS Dahlgren DLG-12 and did a North Atlantic cruise. One of our port calls was Edinburgh Scotland during their Edinburgh Festival. I watched a play that was put on in one of those caves under the city. It was an anti-war play called "The Death of Abraham Lincoln" and was fascinating

One of the things not mentioned here, is the fact that in the Liverpool tunnels, a lot of them lead up into private houses through hidden entrances. There was another documentary about it recently.

I love the fact that we have so much history below our feet, but I wish it wasn’t left to amateur historians to renovate the tunnels so the public can visit and learn about our underground history, the government should give restoration teams grants so the work can be arrived out more effectively than relying on volunteers, they should be able to hire in workers to do the more technical work and so speed up the process. Thanks for sharing this excellent and informative film, very entertaining 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Allan Davies:Believe me,it's not easy to get councils to let us dig, there r Soo many rules & regs. And then ,if you're lucky it's 3days max.Though recently a council here has allowed two digs near the castle,to discover an old water mill & artifacts. The public r always v interested in what's been done & usually v polite & enjoy getting involved. You do get funny questions though at times, like "Have you found any dinosaurs yet?"And Tim draws a deep breath & says "That's paleontology. This is archaeology!"I would love to find a dino.Especially a plesiosaur. My favs.

Great documentary. Just goes to show what genius was displayed by the Victorians. Sensible, well thought out, long lasting solutions to almost every possible civil engineering problem imaginable and which were of benefit to the whole of the population rather than just the rich few. Makes me proud to be an Englishman.

I toured the underground vaults in Edinburgh this summer, and it was some eery stuff. I toured it with my friend. During the tour, I heard lots of pops and thumps, and it progressed into what sounded like people moaning and the room shaking. My friend claimed to not hear this, and so I asked for us to leave the tour early because I was a scaredy cat. I want to go back to finish it... :P

Tobbacoo came from Virginia landed in the port of Bideford , I believe Benson use to run up the hedgerows with his tobbacco hence Benson and hedges cigarettes !. Sir Walter Raleigh was said to have landed tobbacoo into the uk at Bideford first

When I visited London with my ex. we certainly saw The Clink Museum and I think it was round there that there was a dark and dingy narrow pub which we went in but I can't remember it's name. 03.48 The Driftwood Spar is a truly lovely place and dates I believe from the 16th Century. However it has only been a pub since the 1930s so the tunnel would not have intentionally been placed 'behind the bar'. Previously it was a warehouse. A lot of the timbers in it come from old ships and predate the 16th century.

@@thomasbingham2797 this was in the 1990s. Apparently it moved and closed down so is no longer on that site. But I visited the student study rooms and was taken on a tour of some of the tunnels they had access to (which wasn't all of them, even students weren't allowed in some areas) - shown around by a student. I used to attend socials there, as did my elder sister, and she dated a guy there for a while - it was him who took us around to show us the parts of the tunnels that the students used. I distinctly remember the underground study room full of desks and dividers.

Not much underground, but good, - a really good movie about smuggling. A very old move about an English gang off the coast of Cornwall. Real atmospheric. Isolated and brutal gang lures unsuspecting ships of the rough seas to the coastline using false fires at night; only to murder the lot on board and make with the contents. Great twist.

I been working sense 15 I dont see why children working and getting paid is frowned on I agree child slavery is horrible but its not slavery if you pay them some of em need the money to survive now a days they have to beg and search threw trash I bet they rather work and be able to.gain wealth little as it might be it could still save lifes that's why kids now a days take the easy way hard work is for the machines now humans are fat and weak thank god were as mentally smart as we are or we would lose the top of the food chain

In an industrialized country there is no reason for children to be working full time. Now if you want a summer job at 16 for some extra money that is cool

Neocons and Neolibs would love your idea of going back to child labor in the working class. Forget education and ever having a decent life, let them all toil for peanuts for the upper class until they die. What could be better?

Honestly. Do all Aussies just sit around thinking of ways to constantly bitch about the US? Are you that desperate for our attention or are you just envious? You should try to be more like the Kiwis. They're delightful, but you hate them, too, don't you?

Gotta agree that this doco is a lot less dramatic then the usa ones. Oh and don't sit around bitching about the usa you obviously don't know to many Aussie.

Caves, tunnels, half started channel tunnels, early 19th century tunnels under the castle, WWII hospital and bunker, under the castle. Numerous caves that were used by smugglers, soldiers, locals avoiding the blitz. I can go on. Born and bred Dovorian.
