This video is from 'The World of The Seekers' TV special (1968). I've upmixed the mono sound to stereo using digital separation techniques and corrected the speed of the video so that the audio plays at the right pitch. The song was re-recorded by The Seekers and released as 'Study War No More' on the b-side of 'Days Of My Life'.

I’m glad she didn’t become an opera singer because her voice would have been lost to all of us.

Interestingly, Kiri te Kanawa started her career as _not_ an opera singer, until someone told her she could be. I have a CD somewhere of her from her nightclub days, and I actually prefer it. (I'm not a great fan of the soprano sound.)

@@G6JPG I am a life long fan of clssical music but no expert. It seems to me that operatic singing takes away a lot of the potential creativity of the singer since he is actually expected to produce the ( pure ?) notes in that given style of singing. Is a tenor or soprano allowed to wrap the notes with harmonics of his own choice? I dont think so. But this is exactly what Judith does and makes her voice so outstanding for folk and jazz . Judith singing in the operatic style would be a waste.

It was. For years she followed her love of jazz which most people hate. That's why she was hardly heard of till she rejoined the Seekers.

I have been listening to Judith for almost four years and this remarkable performance revealed something: Judith never shouts. In this rendition she sings loudly, as necessary for the tone of the message in the song, but she sings loudly producing ( as usual) perfectly tuned sounds , wrapped in harmonics that we only know they are possible because Judith is capable of producing them.

Praise and thanks that this footage still exists. It is wonderful that I get to see Judith from her teens to her sixties. My heart is broken that she has passed us by. I will never forget her. I have seen her in concert several times, met her and talked to her, and loved every minute of being with her.

Just recently been watching a lot of Judith & the Seekers old videos, it's really incredible to find that they just never seem to fail when singing these perfect songs that are just tailor made for Judith's special voice. Prior to listening to this song I found another great tune on hear " When the stars begin to fall "

This arrangement of "Study War No War" is unique to World of the Seekers. The other version they recorded as the B Side to "Days of My Life" has a piano into and a different overall feel. Both versions are about as close as the Seekers get to a more jazzy American style.

You say "I've upmixed the mono sound to stereo using digital separation techniques and corrected the speed of the video so that the audio plays at the right pitch."; I'm not sure why upmixing to stereo should change the pitch ?!? Or do you mean the video (and thus its audio) was recorded on equipment running at the wrong speed - or that the performance itself that was videoed (including audio) _was_ in your opinion at the wrong pitch?
@rich963
@rich963 Жыл бұрын
The video was recorded on film @24fps, PAL video plays at 25fps, so around 4% faster than it should be - I just corrected that on the video so that it matched the CD audio. I then upmixed it 👍
@G6JPG
@G6JPG Жыл бұрын
@@rich963 Ah, so you're saying the DVD was made 1:1 framewise from the film rather than correcting it, so actually played 25/24 too fast (and presumably with a corresponding pitch shift), but the CD was made from separately-recorded tapes that were used at the right speed - so the DVD was about half a semitone higher than the CD (I reckon a semitone is 8 1/3 %). I know TV material (for drama and e. g. news) that was shot on film that was intended to be used on air actually used cameras running at 25 fps, but I guess such cameras were uncommon, and whoever shot the film only had a 24fps one.
