As several below have commented, Judith Durham's voice is displayed here classically....such incredible range. She is truly one of the greatest all-time female singers. Don't think there is anyone today who can hold a candle to her.

Judith totally took command of the "boys". She keeps them on track and in sync. The sheer column of her choice overtakes them and bursts with energy and life. Fantastic voice, happy to have found them and that they continued to produce songs and performed together until Judith's death. What a legacy she left behind for all of us to discover anew.

As a musician I can hear that while her voice is magic, without the harmonies and carefully understated guitar riffs it simply wouldn't have worked so well. Generally I despise strummers like those buskers you see (and unfortunately hear) everywhere, but in this band they blended it as part of the overall sound and it works. Jimi Hendrix needed his guitar to sing for him because he couldn't. They have someone who can. The Seekers are so good because they've got it exactly right.
@johnschuh8616 Жыл бұрын
Agree. Note she never prospered as much outside this setting. A soloist is as much an actor as a singer, and after she left it took her awhile to develop a stage presence that matched the quality of her voice. She was, after all, still quite young.
@osvaldoschilling9129 Жыл бұрын
I am not a musician but I have listened to a lot of operatic singing. There is no doubt that even great singers need instrumental accompanyment to voice. Rare pieces can be sung without it. With Judith Durham the same happens. As said in other comments, in the seekers case outstanding results are obtained, thanks to Keith's work on the harmonies and their remarkable guitar playing. Many people also highlight Athols bass playing.It seems clear that the natural direction of Judith's career in the 1970s should have been the musicals in the east end on London and elsewhere but she never tried that. I wonder there was a permanent threat of her lung condition to worsen if she did musicals but there are no comments about this in her biography. She opted for small venues accompanied by her husband or their jazz band collaborators. This was a road that would not lead to celebrity but Judith was clearly happy with that since she never sought for a celebrity lifestyle.

Their harmony and great musicianship represented a perfect vessel for accomplished and aspiring songwriters to write songs for. The song "Massachusetts" was written especially for them by the Bee Gees, but the members of the group never knew this at the time. This particular song would have immediately introduced and endeared the Seekers to the American audience in a most fundamental and significant way. Judith would have had thousands of red blooded American males interested in her and she surely would have had to change her phone number.

A friend turned me on to The Seekers a few months ago and am I so grateful for that. This performance has become my favorite particularly when not only hearing Judith but watching her body motions. Every inch of her exudes music moving in rhythm with each note. Even though I was around when they were in their prime, I missed knowing of them and that is one of my biggest regrets with now only being able to hear and see them on recordings like this. Thank's you so much Denny.

Whoever posted this concert (almost in it's entirety!), a deep 'thank you.' HD's stunning, as is the sound. This was the 1st record I owned when I was little (my dad worked at a radio station, and brought them home). Not gonna bemoan how the music, life was better (it was), but, it brings back wonderful, memories, for me - and, apparently many others. THIS is what 'sharing' on the internet's about. Not 'tweeting' every bit of nonsense. But sharing with others. Cheers!

If you transported the Seekers to today, Judith would be utilised as a keyboard player, forming a modern Seekers' repertoire. However their style was suited to the 60s. Folk singing was waining in the late 60s. All very talented musicians.

When I found this on KZfaq a short while ago it was the first time I ever heard it. I was only 10 at the time of this performance but I had already been listening to music for a couple of years (thanks to an older brother). I remember Georgie Girl on the radio, and most of their other hits I heard over the years. I cannot believe that I missed this gem. Did it not get air play in Canada?
