The SMS is definitely a system I want to add to my collection. I didn't play it nearly as much as I did the NES growing up, but there were some really fun games for the system that I enjoyed playing when I would go to a friend's house cause I actually didn't own one. There definitely is quite a few flaws with the system, but it is a really good system nonetheless! I personally thought that the SMS port of Shinobi was really slow, but it was also one of the best looking versions of the game.

Picked the sms up from a classmate in the early 90s and collected all the sega my cards and 3d games. Never got really into it but have fun with golden axe warrior and wonder boy iii dragons trap. NES is always my fav from that era but I actually enjoy the 7800 more than the SMS. Nothing beats dual joystick controls playing robotron on the 7800. Great video, glad you’re experiencing all the classics for yourself.

I had a Master System growing up, but I didn't realize until about a decade ago when I was older that the European version of the console had FM music and sound while the U.S. got stuck with the inferior PSG audio instead. It was around that same time that I also discovered that Brazil made games for the Master System (in collaboration with Sega and the company TecToy) up until 1998.

During the late 1980's when I was still in elementary school (annoying the living crap out of my Kindergarten teacher to the point where she ordered one of the other kids to hit me. Yes, seriously. LOL) I had a Sega Master System. I like to stress that I was a little kid during the 80's who lived in the U.S.A with a Master System. I put emphasis on the fact that this was in the U.S because in the U.S, about 97% of everyone else in my area had the NES. The only kids who did NOT have an NES in my area were me, this kid named Brian (he had a Sega Master System like me) and this one kid named Nick who was stuck with the Atari 7800 (I felt so sorry for him, especially since most of his games were old 2600 games that were handed to him by his cheap parents. LOL. I think he only had 3 or 4 actual 7800 games). Also, While all the other kids were trading NES games back and forth, both me and Brian were letting each other borrow each other's Sega Master System games. I let him borrow games like Shinobi and some others while he let me borrow games like Golvellius: Valley of Doom, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Choplifter, California Games, and Afterburner. Also, At home, since the Sega Master System version of Double Dragon allowed co-op multiplayer (something the NES version didn't have, the NES version was pretty much "Single Dragon" and not true Double Dragon) I would constantly play Double Dragon with my little sister (while we normally played as a team against the enemies, she would sometimes betray me and start attacking me in the game, turning the game into a PVP match where we would fight to the death. LOL. I would respond by beating up her character with a baseball bat or boulder or whatever was on the screen. LOL). Two side notes: 1) The normal jump kick in the Sega Master System version is the key to slaying all the enemies. 2) Strangely enough, my sister ACCIDENTALLY discovered the infinite continue trick for the final level while goofing around. Finally, Toy's 'R Us was the ONLY store in the area that sold Sega Master System games (they even ran commercials for the Sega Master System). All the other stores carried Nintendo ONLY. My aunt worked for some old store called Ames (a Walmart / Target style store) and she told me that Nintendo didn't want the store to carry Sega Master System and Atari 7800 games or else they wouldn't send their games to Ames, which is the reason why Ames ONLY sold NES games and the NES console and NOT the Sega Master System console and games (same goes for Atari). I imagine most of the other stores got the same threat from Nintendo at the time. Oh... And while the Master System had very few third party games, my favorite was the Activision version of RAMPAGE (so much better than the crappy NES version). and my two top favorite games for the console were Phantasy Star (a classic RPG) and Spellcaster (an action RPG... which was a censored PG rated version of a NC-17 rated anime / manga called Peacock King / Spirit Warrior).

I remember the Gravis Gamepad for PC had a joystick you could screw into the d-pad, also it had 2 switches, the first switch was to change from 4 button pad, to 2 button pad with 2 turbofire, and 2nd switch was so you could turn it upside down if you were left handed.

Sega did made a revision later, with a model 2 for the controller where the cable came up top. I guess the reason it was on its side first (and the pause button on the console) was mostly because of japanese culture, over there they would play right next to the console. Famicon has an extremely short cable because of that reason, but Nintendo was smart enough to make a longer controller cable when creating the NES. Nice video! Feels really legit, takes me back to 2006 youtube days.

The Master System controller is an odd design because it has a little joystick and wire on the side. The Atari joystick had the wire at the top, so I don't know why Sega put it on the side. But the model 2 controller was changed with the wire on top and no joystick.

Out of 317 games for the Master System, 158 games only came out in PAL regions, that's roughly HALF the library wasn't available in other regions such as North America/Japan. No wonder other countries think it hardly has any (good) games. Last game to come out for it in NA/Japan was in 1991, Europe last game made for it was 1996.

These consoles all did the same thing Nintendo did. Making 2D platform games. That is why all these other systems failed. Nintendo wanted their games to be exclusive on their platform, and that is not a weird thing to ask, since you want your platform to have it's own identity. Later, Sega got that massage with Sonic and titles like that, but it took a while. All these consoles had nothing better to bring us then 4 billion platform games running from left to right, jumping over and on obstacles. Basically the same shit over and over again. And that made the industrie kind of narrow. Because as a developer, when you made a 2d platform game, were did you want to put it? On the Nintendo of course! Because that's were most costumers were. What we people needed back then, were consoles that were more based around point and click, adventure and strategy games. Something completely different then all these 13 in 12 platform videogames. But companies wanted to make money, and Nintendo sold big time. So they jumped in that river as well. Taking 0 risks, and maximum profit. But that time was about to pass. Since the reason the Sony PlayStation became a success is because the 2D platform age was finally over. And games like Final Fantasy, Ridge Racer Tekken, Resident Evil, Command and Conquer, Metal Gear Solid and games like that shocked the world of videogames. Even though people today look back with nostalgia towards it, the masses back then were really done playing 2D platform games. There was not much choice, but here came the Playstation. The PC was in an uprising as well with Wolfenstein and Doom, Duke Nukem, etc etc. And so, consoles wanted these titles running on their hardware as well. Those were the real system sellers. And thus the time of 2D platform ruling was finally over.

Sony had a huge marketing push in Europe too, installing PlayStations in Nightclubs, having techno/rave music, trying to sell it to more late teens/young 20's, rather than the children that Sega/Nintendo were still mainly targeting. Basically everyone in the UK was hyped about PlayStation, N64 wouldn't come out for a few more years, and the Saturn well, Sega's last two consoles were both add-ons that required you to already own a Mega-Drive (Mega CD and 32X) 32X being a huge failure. The fact that it cost £100 more at launch than PlayStation certainly didn't help (£399 vs £299) Also of the games that were on both platforms, the PlayStation version usually looked better, so why would you buy a console for £100 more when the games looked worse on that version than on a console that cost £100 less. Rayman, Tomb Raider, Wipeout, most people think of those 90's games as PlayStation games, although they were all also on Saturn (and PC) .

So it’s Christmas 1987 and my brother and I want a Sega Master System but guess what, it’s sold out. We ended up getting the NES. So now it’s like 1989 and I’m a senior in high school and my best friend that is going into the Marines rubs in my face how his Master System has better graphics than my NES….Guess what, he was right but I was a dick head and wouldn’t admit he was right back then. I had no clue of Nintendo having a monopoly and strangle hold on third parties until the Genesis came out. Great video buddy I’m done rambling….

Know what surprised me, when I found out the SNES has a LOWER resolution than the NES. I mean obviously SNES games look better, but that's mostly because of the lack of flickering due to too many sprites on screen and more colours.
