Did the sports games on Saturn stink? Did they fail to live up to the hype or expectations from fans who had come to know The Genesis / Mega Drive to be the premiere home for great sports games? Well, even if things did get off to a rocky start... its worth taking a look at the later releases. I think this is an area that saw some great improvements and left us wondering of what could have been.

Not all sports games were bad on saturn. Worldwide soccer and world series baseball 98 are great games. I think the problem is the fact it didn't have the heavy hitters like genesis did made it seem sub standard compared to the gold standard they set for themselves during the 16 bit era

Yeah another fun fact Sega Saturn houses YAMAHA sound processors this video game system is among the few that is the CD unit that sounds truly almost as good as a cartridge I've heard many CD unit video game systems none of them sounds as good as Panasonic 3DO, Sega Saturn or Sega CD. The 3D Graphics of the sports games look pretty damn cool yeah there was some good sports games for the system for sure

I thought Resident evil was actually real talk scary on the Saturn. As for sports I had the soccer game and it was surprisingly really really good. My roommate and I would play for hours. My 20's were a great time. Command and Conquer also brings back good memories. Thanks for the content.

The Sega Sports 98 lineup on Saturn is spectacular, arguably Sega’s strongest lineup ever. World Series Baseball 98 is still the greatest baseball videogame ever made, thanks to its pitcher/batter system. Worldwide Soccer 98 plays brilliantly and the JP edition adds analog controls and online play. NBA Action 98 is the original 2K basketball, what more needs to be said? Sega bought Visual Concepts because of this game, which gets us to NFL/NBA 2K. Add in Steep Slope Sliders and Winter Heat and you have a terrific lineup of sports games. Oh and Madden 98 is great fun. So you’ve got all the major sports covered on Saturn.

I love Winter Heat and SWWS '98 especially. But they don't feature in this video...

Keep up the good work. Saturn is probably my favorite console. Between the Saturn and the Dreamcast. Always loved Sega.

It's definitely one of the most underrated. Thankfully Saturn emulation has improved a lot and am reliving so many of these classics again on the Steam Deck.

Wait...Radical Entertainment did NHL All-Star Hockey 98? No wonder why it looks so much like NHL Powerplay 96 (which is an underrated Saturn gem.) I would also add Worldwide Soccer 98 on the list of good 98 Saturn sports games.

I swear in 1995 I was at Walmart and an employee says no don't get the Saturn we're all boycotting that outside thinking what? But other than that I do remember controversy at the time people were upset because Saturn was released earlier than expected.

I sad it took so long for the saturn to port quality sport titles. The surprise launch messed everything up and Sega never bothered developing any sports games in the beginning.

I felt Saturn sports games didn’t have the reputation as it did on the Genesis mainly because of the disastrous launch of the Saturn which pissed of developers and retails. Also for the fact that apparently it was hard for developers to work with the Saturn Hardware. Interestingly there was a decent amount of sports games in Japan.

I'm not a sports video games nut, but I did play many titles since the 8-bit days from basketball, volleyball, F1, WWF, soccer and more, it's always nice to see them getting the attention they deserve, sports were always a big part of video games and need this highlight so everyone can remember their part.

The Best Madden me & my whole crew played was the one that launched with PS2. Either 2001 or 2002 i forget. But i had just bought a huge SOny Trinitron CRTV at same time. And this was when sh got real w/ madden. Good times 10/10

I was waiting for the FIFA 98 game to appear but it wasn't in the video. FIFA 98 on the Saturn was the first horizontal FIFA game i ever played as the previous entries were vertical games. FIFA 98 was a revolution for the franchise changing the standardised view that has continued to this very day. I know this video is targeted at a North American audience but to overlook the biggest Football franchise of them all is surprising, well maybe not as North America isn't the heartland of Football, Europe is. FIFA was always the biggest selling Football game of that era, though ISS Pro Evolution 2 was my prefered Football game of choice, and on the Playstation it is the pinnacle of 32-Bit Football games, eclipsing FIFA with ease. Cool video though, cheers.

I apologize for that. I think I am a little blind to The FIFA franchise. I just never got into those games. I will have to explore this for sure.

@@supermegagrafx64 No need to apologise lol. Football games aren't nearly as popular in North America as they are in every other region. American Football games barely register on the map over here in Europe, which is dominated by FIFA and PES. During the 16 & 32-Bit eras FIFA constantly outsold ISS as FIFA had the licenses for names and player likenesses, though ISS always had the better gameplay and bigger moveset. This all changed in the PS2 era though as ISS changed it's name to PES and dominated the sales with far superior gameplay, and a FIFPRO license for player names, and the introduction of an expanded Master League...this is where hardcore PES players could play a 2 Division League system with promotion and relegation along with the Cups and European competitions. PES set the standard of what a Football game could be during this era and is highly regarded and fondly remembered among players of this generation. Cheers.

Yah they did end up good, but then this was the Sega Sports team, and they were rock solid on every system! 96 was a tough year for all the developers, 97 was better for sure.

Back in the '90s I wouldn't waste my time or invest in a video game of golf 🎮🏌📺 but now these days strangely enough I'm starting to like to play golf since 10 years ago on different video game systems I find it very relaxing, isn't that crazy!

@@supermegagrafx64 yeah I have 3DO fresh in a box I got it for $200 bucks a few months back it's a 1994 model . I got a handful of games and the 3D Graphics are really amazing it's like way better than PlayStation 1 seriously I'm not making it up it has way better colors and smoother 3D graphics and the screen doesn't look all broken up pixelated Graphics or screen tearing 3DO almost looks like Nintendo 64 if not better.

Sports games on the Saturn were average. They were there but there wasn't any must have titles or games that had the gaming community bragging about. Sega Genesis and Dreamcast had better sports games then Saturn but Saturn had better RPG titles then those two though.

Sega dropped the BALL on footBALL in the 32 bit gen. All their sports games were junk. 98 was the first year where sports games really got into realism.

I'm really honestly more impressed with the 3D on graphics on Sega Saturn, then I am for PlayStation 1 even though I know both systems are real close because both are CD-ROM units.
