I'm Christian and I applaud you for a respectful and engaging modern interpretation. I urge other Christians and other people altogether to learn about the debt jubilee and how it ties into Christ's ministry and ancient near eastern political and economic practices. This is not just a sermon on being a good and humble person, but also a call to free indentured servants and restore lands seized to pay debts. I would love to hear your interpretation of Isaiah 58 in this respect. I think a lot about this ancient economy wisdom in the context of current debt crisis in technological advanced societies who have the means to eliminate many scarcities.

Great work man. The World Youth Day is taking place in my country, and despite being a Christian, I fail to see God in that "display" of faith. This passage explains clearly why. It's a vain display of faith for other to see.

I love your version of this wonderful teaching - it did make me chuckle a few times. I heard my parents say these things in their own way, not all biblical speak, and I said them to my children, and their children. They sound simple, yet even now I have to remind myself of them every single day - it's a matter of just keep practising. Thank you my friend, I may call you Matt from now on. :)

Thank you dear for this, you remind me of my first contact with Christianity from outer world. Iraq-Kurdistan in 1991, there isn't any one who could be able to speak to any expatriate especially those who are in a mission. I made that contact after the up rise of Kurd nationality against Samad Hussen the tyrany. This part was so dear to my heart that I always remember that I learn from it to act as human, I really learn humanity from Christ. I love him from the bottom of my heart.

Translation to modern language is a good thing, but it does not guarantee to make easy and clear to interpret. For example: in Israel in Jesus times, slaping someone was always with your right hand on your right cheek, with the outside chand. The left hand was not used in public because it was considered unclean. Slaping someone was not a beating, but an expression of contempt. This was often used as a reprimand for someone over whom one had power (e.g. master of a slave, a Roman for an Israelite). When someone turns left cheek, you cannot slap him with the outside of your right hand, but only strike with the inside or attack. This is not a slap but an attack. And this means recognizing a worthy opponent in the other person, entering into a fight, and this confirms value of one who is attacked. Turning the cheek is communication: “I am no worse than you. Wanna hit me? Then do it as an equal and don't pretend you're better." Jesus says that one should not respond with aggression, because it will not help. Be calm about showing that you have value. The best result is the aggressor's reflection. However, if he attacks, he is in contradiction to how he has previously degraded the attacked, because he confronts him on equal terms. At this point, the aggressor does not show the subordinate his place, but initiates a fight with someone he recognizes as an equal. So when reading ancient texts, one must know the context to avoid misunderstandings. That was just one of many examples. If someone is interested in more explanations like this, then I recommend KZfaq channel „InspiringPhilosophy”.

Great video. I love the interpretation but some texts are to be read plain as they are, such as: Matthew 5:22 ("...You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire.") and other verses read by you. Hell of fire is a place not just fire. So it takes understanding to really interprete the word of God and understanding come from the Holy Spirit. It is not craving for a simplified version of the Bible, for I tell you, all you will hear will only please your ears and lead you astray. True understanding requires the finger of the God the Holy Spirit. Therefore if you don't understand the Word of God, instead of looking for simplified version in videos ask the Lord Jesus to give you His spirit and He will give you in abundance.

OK, I get the desire to make the old language more understandable, but to make Jesus sound like a "bro form the hood" ? He spoke in metaphors for a reason- it's poetry that is meant to sink in over time, work on your subconscious, change you from within. This street slang angle is so completely distracting ! People translate Shakespeare into modern language too, but they are careful to not lose the poetry and the spirit of the old words. The form is part of the magic here, you can't just turn it into whatever you think is cool. Sorry, but no thanks, I'll stick with the original.
