The Serpent that Devours the Horizon (or "Serpent Eating the Ground" as it's also been called) has consistently had a presence on the GaMetal Song Ballots over the years, placing in the top 10 most years.
I had been considering a few different songs to close the year out with, but upon listening to my first draft of this, I couldn't get over how perfect it felt as a closing song.
That and you know, time constraints. 😅
Thank you all for an amazing 2023, we're going to kick it up a notch or two (or ten) in 2024, so get ready because I have a lot of great stuff headed your way! 💙

I just realized, since 2018, when the Gametal ending hasn't been a Kirby final boss theme, it's always been an RPG final boss theme. The Darkest Lord God Shattering Star The Azure Arbitrator now The Serpent that Devours the Horizon I will forever stand by this: RPG final boss themes hit harder than they should. This is fact.

We fans are still around! Even after Bravely Second nearly killed the series in Japan and fractured the fanbase overseas, and BD2 met with a critical “is pretty alright” by most people, we still are around and kickin’! Still hoping for a remake of his That Person’s Name Is/He Of The Name cover.

@@Dimumouto Second in Japan was very different to what we got overseas. There’s many things I could mention, like the lack of good endings to the sidequests unless you did that specific outcome a second time, the non-existent balance broken by the first new job and the horrible writing with Magnolia from the cut plotline (complaints I agree with), so on. There’s many videos on this if you ever go looking, great one off the top of my head is RedNovaTyrant’s. BD2 is a really good game with a great ending even if unfinished so I do hope you give it another shot one day. I agree it’s not better than Default, but I did enjoy it better than Second and Octopath, still have yet to try Octo 2 yet as I’m waiting until after I beat Triangle Strategy but from what I’ve heard it’s probably on par with.

This was _more_ than deserving of being the final cover of the year, the original was already arguably one of the best videogame tracks of all time and you somehow just made it even better!! Everything - from lead guitar, to the drums, to the piano, to the background shreddage, to the choir, even to the visuals on this video - is just absolutely _top-notch!_ I am not kidding when I say that this is genuinely one of the most high-quality tracks you've ever out out, you absolutely KILLED it on this one dude!!!

Oh my God. Wow. This has been an amazing year for GaMetal, and in my mind, this song topped it off. A cover of Serpent Eating the Ground, and by God, it's glorious. At first, I was a little surprised that this song was played so straight with zero solos at first, but I feel as though it worked in the end. Not to mention, the rest of the song was glorious and adapted perfectly, in particular those Zelda and Bowser hand puppets made the whole thing. Also, that solo at the end? Perfection! Ngl, while I don't know if I like it as much as Serpent Eating the Ground, Battle of Providence is so underrated imo (like the rest of the OST). It might not as good as BD1, but I still really like BS OST (doesn't help that Supercell is my favorite band and that Ryo is the composer of it). But man, Eyes that Gaze into the Nexus is awesome. My fav of the three themes.

Not to distract too much from your excitement for Bravely Default, as the game does have a lot of other great tracks but be sure to dial your expectations for the game and series in general. I can't speak for Bravely Second or Bravely Default 2 beyond the demo (the latter of which seemed to forget the things that the first game did right), but Bravely Default is divisive and it is unfortunately a spoiler to say why... Good music when in battle at least and a lot of class/job mixing if that's your thing at least. Wishing you the best in the new year still.

@@thelastgogeta Personally lean on it being one of the greatest RPGs of all time, with a core flaw of not changing up 4 bosses 4 times unlike the rest, without spoiling on it. Second I rank with Octopath as a massive disappointment as both games are the same guys, and I genuinely didn’t like both games that much, but there’s still great qualities to both. Default 2 is very consistent, for better and worse. It never hits as high of highs as with Default and Second, there’s a lot more filler sidequests instead of impactful ones, and the counter system devolves very quickly once you hit chapter 4 so that everything just gets a BP any time you act. Yet, in spite of those lows, it never hits the core flaws of the originals either, never getting to suffer through those lacking parts of Chapter 2 of Default, never having to go through the massive amount of backtracking as in Chapter 3 of Default… hell, despite not being anything too spectacularly and with some major points just being rushed and unfinished, the story is leagues above Second and Octopath both in my eyes. A good transition to proper 3D, but one that leaves more problems to solve that weren’t there before.

Give it a try! I will say the first game has some... questionable story decisions halfway though, but it's still great! Also, Bravely Default and Second are connected, but Bravely Default 2 is it's own thing. 2 is still a great game if you wanna start there.

@@darienb1127 I’ll still defend chapters 5-8 sidequest wise with what they do, as stuff changes a lot there, and it’s what made me love what was going on once I realized. Just… can’t defend the actual repetitiveness of the actual plot relevant beats. They should’ve given those 4 new moves each time, or at least A new move…

Holy hell this is an absolute banger! This is such a cool way to end 2023 with something I’ve seen constantly asked for in the comments over the years, and it’s an amazing conclusion to the year. I was thinking the finale was gonna be something like Volo and Giratina, something from Tears of the Kingdom, the AI Professor’s theme, or maybe even something from Elden Ring or God of War: Ragnarok as a surprise pick, but I can’t say I’m disappointed. I thought you did this song already. So color me surprised when I recognized the song immediately for the amazing piece of musical art that it is. Every part of this song is amazing, but I personally love everything past the 3 minute mark. Slayed the serpent with this one, can't wait for pizza tower next year.

One of the LAST songs I expected to get covered. As a big fan of Linked Horizon, it's quite a thought when I realize that GaMetal now covered one of their songs, and it just translates to the GaMetal style so well. Bravo.

When I finished Bravely Default back in 2015, I knew the final boss was cemented as my favorite final boss track ever, edging out the still venerable Dancing Mad (FF6). You have made this track justice! It is phenomenal, exciting, perfectly timed and oozing style. The only way this could be better IMO is if you and Revo (the composer) joined forces.

Glad in the final moments of 2023 we see a glimpse of Jonny's energy displacement clone technique for one finale-ass finale song. Something tells me 2024 is going to be chaotic, but i have no doubt you'll be able to carry us through with another bout of amazing remixes as always. ...Ignore the fact im 13 hours late and just pretend this was made in 2023

So for those of you who never played Bravely Default, the section at 4:33 is one of the themes that can play when you use a character's special move, which were dependent on your class. I set that specific character as my team's healer, leading to me having one of the best comeback themes in any fight I was losing. In the actual final boss, it's the most hype moment because the game hits you with all four character themes followed by the game's main theme just after you gain the advantage in what should be an unwinnable fight.

Awesome one ! I guess that now that you have made this one, I can suggest the other two final boss themes of the serie : - Battle of Providence (Bravely Second), which imo, while not being as good is still great (like the whole OST that I really liked despite changing compositor, but I'll admit that I'm biaised since Ryo is the guy being my favorite band) - Eyes That Gaze into the Nexus - The Ones Who Gather Stars in the Night (Bravely Default 2), maybe my fav of the three final boss themes of the serie
