For our D&D 5e build this week, we're attempting to do the impossible: build a character who is mostly a Barbarian, but who fills the Support role. And no, I don't mean Tank!

Couple minor points of errata (thanks to those who have pointed them out): - Inspiring Leader gives Level + Cha Mod in Temp HP, not Level + Prof Bonus - Mark of Healing Halfling (and other Dragonmark Races) add spells to your spell list but don't give them to you automatically - I *did* use Celestial Warlock once before, in the Martyr build :).

How about a Halfling/Gnome Barbarian that has the Unarmed Fighter Fighting Style for a 1d8 damage to each punch? Or a Swarm Ranger / Spores Druid Multiclass build?

At warlock 5 you recommended 3 to 4 3rd level spells when the most you could choose at that point would be 2. Edit: obviously I meant 2nd level spells

@@kbeazy_3050 No, at Warlock 5 you get 3rd level spells. You get 2nd lvl spells at Warlock 3. Their spell level scales the same way as a full caster like a Wizard for instance. Hope that helps

After further thinking and refinement, the 1st Lvl Spellwrought Tat would work better. Gets around the INT requirements for the Wizard Ritual Caster feat. And it works better thematically..."a barbarian getting a tattoo from the village elder" sounds dope AF

Quick note! Dragonmark races don't give you their spells automatically, they just add them to your spell list. You would need to use your warlock "spells known" to learn them. Love your builds!

I do truly love hearing about peoples 'concept' builds. Not focusing on game mechanics per se but to really delve into the life and personality of the character and within that trying to make them the best being they can be. Coming up with a current game mechanics multi-class build to create essentially a different 'class' (shaman) is very intriguing and hard to do. You do that sort of thing so well. The easiest thing to do would be work with the DM to create a new class and just reskin current abilities and spells of same level, with a lot of tweaking going on during the campain to fix any problems that would arise. But to use currently accepted and used mechanics is a true skill, well done.

My most powerful character was actually a support barbarian lol. He was a bugbear ancestral guardian multiclassed with artillerist for the protector cannon. Basically ensured that any attack based enemy did pathetic damage with the combination of disadvantage, half damage, a damage reduction reaction and temporary hitpoints on all my allies. And he attacked from 15 feet away with slasher so that enemies had a very hard time reaching him. Very fun character would recommend.

Interesting build, but I think 10 levels of Ancestral Guardian Barbarian with 7 levels of Redemption Paladin and 3 levels of Valor Bard would be much better at a support role, (because support isn't just healing, and there may be other party members in your group that are better at that.) Ancestral Guardian has Ancestral Protectors that allow you to give your allies resistance to the damage being done to them, and if they are 30 feet away from you can reduce that damage by 2d6 at level 6, and 3d6 at level 10 through Spirit Shield. Valor bard will allow you to give your allies bardic inspiration which would be improved to combat inspiration at level 3 when you take College of Valor, which would give them more of a chance to make their attack rolls and saving throws. Plus at level 2 the bard would give the song of rest which gives your allies a little extra healing when taking a long rest. On top getting lay on hands and Divine Smite at level 2, a Paladin at level 6 gives you Aura of Protection that gives your allies an additional bonus to saving throws, at level 7 Oath of Redemption, you get Aura of the Guardian In my mind, the best way of doing support with a barbarian is to have abilities that do damage prevention, reduction, or redirection that allows you to stay in the middle of combat and yet still help your allies.

Missed opportunity: alchemist artificer arguably has the best support options that don’t involve casting spells during combat. All spell slots can be converted into elixirs, which can be administered by your homunculus using its action (commanded by your bonus action). Sanctuary cast on the homunculus outside of combat keeps it fairly safe, infusions allow additional support options, you have ritual casting. Lv 9 alchemist makes your elixirs confer temp hp, freeing you up to use a different barb subclass (wild magic?).

I really like your take on this build idea. I was tinkering with a Barbarian support idea quite awhile ago that centered around reducing the amount of damage the party takes; going with Goliath Barbarian in the Ancestral Path. Instead of going with Warlock, I picked Artillerist Artificer with the intent of dropping the 1d8+INT temp hp turret. My plan was for them to start as a big burly woodcutter in the mountains that had some passing skill with making wood carvings; who eventually learned how to animate them with magic. And then it dawned on me that I just made Santa Claus.

One thing that you didn't mention at level 10 (5th warlock) that is nice for your support role is the new ritual spells you can acquire for your book, particularly Leomund's Tiny Hut (for roughing it in the wilderness), Water Walk, and Water Breathing. They don't even require concentration, so you can cast water walking on the party (it targets multiple people), then go rage and fight something on top of the water.

Thank you so much for doing a warlock barbarian multiclass as I had previously requested. Something that really boosts this character's versatility in combat is the fact that there is not really such a thing as "risking your rage by not attacking." The wording of the feature says that you lose your rage if you *end* your turn without having taken damage or attacked a hostile creature since the *end of your last turn.* This means that at the *start* of any one of your turns you know for a fact if you can afford to hold off on your attacks, i.e. if you took damage or made a reaction attack since the end of your last turn. You never really have to gamble with your rage. Also, I love this build! Have played an aasimar barbalock myself, and the ability to support the party on top of being an amazing tank and damage dealer feels really good!

My wife is currently playing a Shifter ancestral guardian barbarian in my Eberron campaign (psychically themed as opposed to spiritually), sword and board, and last night, between the damage reduction reaction and resistance from her features, she ended up negating over 100 damage across the fight, and that's a conservative estimate, and she's 9th level. It was either that, or the boss focus on the highest AC member of the party (her character), whose AC is 4 higher than the closest ally. That archetype is AWESOME.

Hey Colby. interesting build though this feels more like a healer barb than a support barb. i was looking for more buffing/debuffing stuff. if it was me, i'd consider the new hobgoblin as a race with its powerful help. then i'd consider wolf totem barb to provide advantage to my allies. for multiclassing options, i'd definitely consider those that provide non-spell options that buff the party such as peace/twilight cleric or something to boost the hobgoblin help further by picking up mastermind to turn that help into a bonus action.

I'd love to see a build focused around an aberrant mind sorcerer with a focus on controlling the battlefield and psychic damage spells - quickened spell has the potential to abuse spells which require saving throws using mind sliver, and twinned spell is so good with so many of the psionic spells. Bonus points if it's a kenku, the telepathy can work around the weakness of mimicry and high charisma can help with deception to abuse the feature.

This made me look back on the celestial pact warlock and made me realize how good they can be. With gift of the ever living ones pact of the chain. As long as your familiar is within 100ft of you, you receive max dice value every time you gain hit points, not just from spell. So just with short rest hit dice and healing light from the subclass you can be at high hit points pretty easily. If anyone had wither and bloom from strixhaven, you can get that max 8 hp plus casters spell mod.

I would love to see some sort of Barbarian/Druid shape-shifting focus kind of build, like Path of the.... Beast? (The one time I can't remember a subclass 😫) With some druid-y thing, or maybe a ranger?? Artificer/Barbarian is especially fun because a lot of the fun spells in the early/mid levels don't require concentration, or even for the ones that do, they more than make up for not using a rage immediately in combat.

Crazy how you can find so much variety in the same class picks!

Now this is a REALLY cool build I can already imagine how fun it is to play! A few things I'd like to suggest: 1. Take 1 level in palading much earlier. You don't really have a use for your reaction and giving on average 7.5-11.5 (based on prof bonus) to your tank or the person enemies are focusing every round while also giving temp hit points REALLY adds up quick With everything you easily almost double the hp of one of your allies and give a sizeable amount to the rest 2. Pact of the chain is a very real consideration Yes you do get find familiar but an invisible flying familiar is much better at avoiding death than just an owl with flyby But that's not all. Without even taking the invocation, since you have extra attack, you can use one of your attacks to make, say, a sprite ping an enemy from afar A DC 10 con check to get poisoned sounds bad except you force this save /every round for very minimal downside. Statistics is in your favor 3. It is very possible that there will be turns where your allies don't take damage In those scenarios, investment of the chain master makes sure you always have a use for your bonus action I love pact of the chain and I think it's very underutilized

We’ll done I say! One thing, if you don’t like the turn 5’ of water to ice feature, you can change storm auras each level up. You’d lose the minor temp hp, but could get a swim speed. Esp once you’re giving temp hp otherwise I thought this was very well done! Challenge succeeded!

I haven't seen much yet, but I love it. This was 1 of my first character requests. Awesome video. A good alternative would probably the circle of dreams druid (a similar healing feature, out to 120ft intead of 60, has higher limit for burst healing on their feature and lines up better with mark of healing halfling).

Like the build! Here's my approach: Way of Mercy and Ancestral Guardian. The aim is to use your attack and bonus action martial arts/flurry of blows to ensure you get a hit on a creature without having to resort to reckless attack (although reckless attack with flurry of blows is pretty nice). This gives the creature disadvantage on your allies while you can potentially take the dodge action too. And you can heal allies 3 times per short rest by touching/punching/slapping them which is very thematic for a support barbarian...
@reespewa
@reespewa 2 жыл бұрын
Further thing to mention: With Way of mercy you can fit a use of healing hands into a turn where you are activating ancestral guardians with your attack action by using flurry of blows, so rage and guardians always stays active.

As always I love your reasonings, the warlock really got me and was a very good pick. I would've personally done: 11 Ancestral Guardian Barbarian (disadvantage and flavour divination spells), 6 Dreams Druid (more flavour and bonus action healing) and 3 Twilight Cleric (per turn temp hp and Aid spell).

Dang that's tech! I never thought of Celestial Warlock AND Healer's Kit. I love it! But I could see Path of Wild Magic barb for the 6th level ability. It recharges spell slots once per long rest. And that is spell levels for an amount of people per proficiency bonus. So out of combat heal someone with your spell slot, Bolstering Magic to heal a second time, Healer's kit. Then short rest regain your spell slot and healer's kit usage. That is just you. You can give two other players a 1 through 3 spell slot back.

I am really fond of that build and honestly willing to use it as soon as I will be able to play with someone! Now, on that note, for a change - would you be so kind to create a 100% offensive Cleric? A war priest of some kind? ZERO healing, buffs and so on - pure damage? The domains that come to mind are Tempest and Light - I think the first has more chances to shine in that role, to be honest. (Not the War Cleric though, that subclass is… eh. At least imo.)

For purely offense you have to go Light cleric. Sure tempest can occasionally do more burst damage, but half their domain spells are utility / battlefield control not offense and most of them upcast really poorly, whereas only one of Light cleric's spells is not offense. Alternatively, if you go Tempest you have to build around Spirit Guardians - use a race that gets a Wizard/Sorcerer cantrip and then use Shocking Grasp with Thunderbolt Strike to get double SG damage each round.

I've been thinking about a thematically shaman character, that would be a cross between the Shaman from For Honor (fights with a one-handed axe), and a kind of dirty ritual caster/seer/diviner (Augury/Scrying/etc), not so much as a healer/support. I did take a look at the usual casters, one cleric subclass could fit it (don't remember which one), and I eventually first settled on a Hexblade Warlock. I basically went for curses/debuffs, divination spells, and specifically didn't want to be using Eldritch Blast because that crap is OP and didn't fit the theme I wanted. The second thing I settled on, well, is a custom class, that's basically a copy-paste of WoW's Shaman, with interesting and fitting class features (getting possessed by spirits), two subclasses (elemental, and spirits), and a spell list of his own. Other than class features, it functions as a cleric. But it's a brew, so it will depend on the DM. But I didn't consider the Barbarian for personal taste reasons, and that is an interesting idea that would potentially fit. I'll look at it and see what I can do. ------------------- Update : found something somewhat satisfactory to what I was looking for. A trouple of options : - Path of the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian (10 levels) + Hexblade Warlock (10 levels) - Path of the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian (10 levels) + Oath of the Watchers(10 levels) - Path of the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian (10 levels) + Hexblade Warlock (5 levels) + Oath of the Watchers(5 levels) Other aspects of it that wouldn't vary regardless of these choices, are : - Marf of Finding human or half-orc - Ritual Caster (Wizard) at 4th level, Warcaster at 12th level, ASI at every other opportunity - Haunted One or Hermit background, I pick Haunted One for theme but both fit - I didn't intend it as a frontliner, so I'd go STR>CHA>DEX>CON for stats in that order, because the barbarian rage does all the necessary tanking, but ideally the CON modifier shouldn't me negative, because of concentration checks and otherwise general frailness issues I went for a theme, didn't care to do any optimizing, so it might be off-topic. As long as I don't forget that I'm not supposed to be a frontliner, all is good. Damage will be not non-existent but not exceptional either, combat utility will be decent but not exceptional, out of combat utility will be probably the best aspect of the build.

Interesting. I like it. I had a whole story about a courier who dies trying to save her family. Having no skills other than running errands she is useless. This is after the local shaman tells her that her next life is more interesting than her current to ask about it. So I created a courier background using the official rules then I found 2 possible Shaman classes. One is by Wolf and the other I forget but it has a Furblog (sorry if I misspelled it). Anyway if dm says no I played around with the Ancestral Barbarian and Divine sourcerer but I liked the Grave Cleric (2 levels) + Twlight Druid much better. At first she was human. In reality people can die and come back after being resuscitated. But I had too many humans and I like to play variety so I changed her to Reborn. I rather like the idea that she is communicating with her dead ancestors. After all in her backstory she meets one of her great great grandfather's and together they help guide the recently dead to the afterlife. She is awaken ...or returns to life after hearing a strange distressed voice. In following the voice she plunges into darkness away from the bright light and the pain of her wounds are now felt. She opens her eyes to a stranger holding a totem pressed in her hands. The stranger, another character I'm going to play found her on a pile of dead bodies and noticed a slight rise to her chest. She gifts it to the character saying it was given to her by her shaman who said " you'll know what to do with it when the time comes ". Chaali the Reborn believes the character raised her from death but that's not the case. The stranger just granted her some healing thay she didn't know she was capable of until then. I'll have to write how they get separated because I don't want to play 2 characters at once. They become sworn sisters there and begin their journey of learning who they really are and what their ment to do.

i think the halfling you were looking for in this build as a character concept was the Lotusden halfling from Explorer's Guide to Wildemount. they get a +1 to Wisdom rather than Charisma or Constitution (using the old +2/+1 method of ASIs at level 1) as well as a +2 to Dexterity. they have the Child of the Wood ability which gives them Druidcraft, Entangle at 3rd level and Spike Growth at 5th level regardless of their class, which fits the theme quite well. Taking Ritual Caster as a feat, as you pointed out, gets round the problem of raging in combat and being prevented from concentrating on a spell while raging. it just seems slightly forced to have a character who can only be a damage dealing character in combat and only cast spells out of combat. great try to prove the Dungeon Dudes wrong though! and i love both your channels!

I think that 3 level on divine soul sorcerer could be a good option instead of the 2 paly + 1 barb at the end. Casting aid with a 3 level Warlock slot before a short rest + inspiring leader would give a whole lot of extra Hitpoints to the party without using any resources. Enhance Ability is also a good out of combat utility spell available to sorcerers (with the possibility to be twinned). As always, amazing job! it's really incredible how you get to be inventive, funny and original week after week.

I actually came up with a very similar build, but instead forgets barbarian levels after 5 (for extra attack), and is way more selfish on the healing. Pact of the chain in order to get maximized self healing via the invocation (forget its name) This build was inspired from your sporebeast, which made me look nonspellslot usage of magical abilities that could be used with barbarian rage. :)

6 levels of Ancestral Barb and 6 levels of Twilight Cleric with new Hobgoblin race. Make sure to grab Aid and Warding Bond since they work while raging. Seriously these two subclasses synergize insanely well with ways to utilize your action, bonus action and reaction each round to be an effective frontline support even while raging due to stacking warding bond, aid, channel divinity and spirit shield.

Scarred Lands 5e has the War Shaman path for Barbarians. They‘re basically Eldritch Knights but get Druid spells instead. They can‘t cast spells while raging but can keep concentration on spells. Most importantly, however, is that they can expend spell slots to share their rage with other characters. Because sharing is caring.

When I saw the Dungeon Dudes' video, I decided to try to make a support barbarian, but eventually shifted into creating a "Warrior Shaman" homebrew subclass that is a 1/3 caster class similar to an eldritch knight but with access to druid spells. But their main feature is the ability to magically transfer barbarian features to people they are touching: "At 3rd level, you learn to magically transfer your Barbarian abilities to your allies. Before taking an action on your turn (including a bonus action), you can transfer some or all of your barbarian abilities to an ally you are touching for a round (no action required). Once you do so, you lose the ability to use those features or grant them to another ally until the start of your next turn. If you transfer your ability to rage and the person chooses to rage, they expend one of your uses of rage. For your ally to use the barbarian features you transfer to them, you must be in constant contact with them. As soon as you are no longer touching them, they lose the abilities you grant them until you use this feature again, even if you touch them again before the start of your next turn."
