A part of me wanted Spezza to stay because I think he has a lot to offer, both to the troops and also to management. Never say never, may be he and the new GM can come to term. I hope, but I know that new management always likes to bring in their own people. It’s just life.

The whole point of the no-trade clause is because he should be able to negotiate without the threat of being traded if he demands too much. He has absolutely no reason to make any kind of "commitment", the quotation marks being important there because they are not able to make any kind of legal commitment, so it would be nothing more than Dubas' "I don't want to work for any other team than the Leafs". And he has already stated he wants to keep playing for the Leafs so you're just blowing air.

I don't think they should sign him for the $ he will want - Has he been anywhere close to the levels of a Crosby, Toews, Stamkos or Hedman - The answer is a resounding no. In my mind he doesn't have the leverage to make huge demands based on his playoff records and if he demands too much I would much prefer to get assets for the guy instead.

of course and they did. The only thing to determine is - did he do that on purpose because he wanted to leave? or did he overplay his hand as far as how much Shanahan wanted him. Don't think we will ever know the answer for sure. Under the circumstances if you are really interested in staying GM after that response to your agent and counter-offer. Why respond by email - why not call and say I would like to iron out something with you - or speak in person - whether overtly or covertly - he did not want the job anymore IMO.

Couldn't agree more, I would also like to add that Mark Hunter was supposed to be the draft super scout guru, and in the time he was with the leafs aside from Marner (who he had in JR & there were some concerns about how high he would go) absolutely none of Hunters picks worked out at all. So that scouting acumen is perhaps more hype than substance.

Of course Matthews and Nylander will try to drag out their decision as long as possible whether to resign with the Leafs. The new GM better set a hard deadline say mid-June 2023. If he’s certain the two won’t resign, you have two weeks to trade them. That’s no problem if there are plenty of interested teams.
@bajjanitor
@bajjanitor Жыл бұрын
What are you even talking about? They aren't even allowed to extend Matthews' and Nylander's contracts before June 30th. And the no-movement clause during their extendable period is put there at the request of the players because they don't want the threat of being traded to loom over the contract negotiations. So it would be completely against their own interest, if not outright a contract violation, to do some kind of half-binding commitment to extend their contracts. The GM can obviously not set a deadline for the players that they have to commit to an extension before they are even allowed to legally. They have both stated that they wish to keep playing for the Leafs. Having them answer that question again is the most a GM can hope for before their no-trade clause kicks in.

@@Landis_Grant "Both Matthews and Nylander could give the new GM their oral assurance that they wanted to remain a Leaf, however after June 30, 2023, they both changed their mind. Now what?!" Business as usual, request a trade or play for a team you don't want to play for until the contract expires. "They’ll play out the final year of their contract and become untradable UFAs." That is indeed the nature of UFA, because there is no one who owns their rights at that point. What you can do is sign them though, which is extremely doable. "The Leafs would receive nothing when they both depart." That is both true and unavoidable if they aren't traded before July and that's what they'll go on to do.

It is going to be interesting to hear Dubas' side of this some day. What does Shanahan have left on his contract? Two years? How much of this decision was him thinking for a few days of bringing in a veteran GM, maybe even one who's won a cup - to try and make adjustments on the fly here to try and help Shanahan prove his case for his own contract extension in two more years with some playoff success? I was already looking forward to an incredibly interesting Leafs off season, watching with keen interest to see if Marner or Nylander gets traded. And the Matthews extension. Now as I wait for a new GM to be named it might be the most interesting off season I can remember. Even more so than 94' and the Clark-Sundin trade fallout. Or the summer we waited for Cliff Fletcher to join the organization.

To be GM of the Leafs you can't be wishy washy or give signs that the pressure of the market is troubling for you and your personal life.... you have to embrace the pressure and as Shanahan said it's what you sign up for as a member of that organization - They are the Yankees of hockey minus the championships which just places even more pressure on them.... it is not an easy job or market but that comes with market's that have passion - Some love that others don't. Dubas dropped hints it's not for him - Combine that with just one playoff round win in his tenure and blindsiding Shanahan with a counter offer (not by phone but email at that!) for a contract raise and Dubas holding that Monday presser against Brendan's wishes made the decision for Shanahan to reach that new place he got to with Dubas and letting him go a very easy one.

As somebody who works on a lot of contract negotiations, major corporations do this to each other all the time. MLSE acting like this is beyond the pale from Dubas is ridiculous. They hung him out to dry all year and then expected him to kiss their feet and thank them for the opportunity to get overruled and abused by their coterie of hangers-on. Were I in Dubas's shoes, I would have done the exact same thing. You made me look stupid all year -- now I'm going to return the favor. I hope Dubas lands on his feet. He deserves the chance to actually run a team and not have a middle-man overruling his hockey decisions and an entire network of a major stakeholder trashing him on a daily basis.

At the end of the day highly likely it was all about power within the organization. Dubas made alot of mistakes but I always thought there was interference from ownership. Still believe so. You have a franchise with no cup since 67 and very little playoff success but there the wealthiest franchise in the league...been that way for a very long time. Them and the Rangers most wealthiest. These telecom companies only care about the money. Leafs will never win a cup with this ownership group. I don't even believe Shannahan has alot of power. Both him and Dubas seem like good people but I do not believe they run the show. No way.

Winning in the playoffs IS profitable... If they constantly spend to the salary cap (which they do), then it's in ownerships best interest to go deep in the playoffs every season. The Leafs are a failure because of bad management, not bad ownership. Perhaps if ownership had stopped Dubas from handing out massively overpriced contracts to Matthews, Marner, and Tavares, maybe they'd have the cap space to build a winner.

@@DarthChewie There’s a report saying that Shanny was in the negotiating room with Dubas when the Three Amigos (Matthews, Marner, and Nylander) were gifted generous contracts. Brian Burke said the Core 4 were collectively overpaid by at least $5 M. That $5 M could have been used to sign a number 1 defenseman.

I’m sorry but habs fans, Leaf fans and Boston Fans have more passion then Arizona fans… now there are some really passionate Arizona fans I don’t doubt that. I’m sorry but they don’t compare to the 3 greatest hockey organizations Montreal, Boston and Toronto it’s just different.. Because there is so much history and there are generations of passion even me as a kid The Habs we’re everything in my household…. Arizona doesn’t have that to the extent of Montreal, Boston and Toronto.

Please please do not let Dubas anywhere near the Ottawa Senators. Actually I wish TO whould try to lure Pierre "Proudest Day Of My Life" Dorion away from Ottawa. That would be the funniest thing I could hope for. Matthews has no intention of staying in Canada where he will never be recognized as the greatest hockey player the universe has ever known. I can just imagine him thinking "Those barbarians in Canada actually talk about things like winning puck battles on the boards and, if you can believe it, they even talk about throwing body checks." I think he will not sign any deal with TO because he wants to walk for nothing to an American team of his choice and doesn't want it to have to cost them. He will be the saviour. Good luck trading him.

he can't be that crazy. Athletes are defined by championships - especially the great ones. If he goes to a big US market with high expectations and perform the same in the playoffs he will be in a world of hurt. If anything he has it easy in TO. There is not that much scrutiny on him - he somehow escapes the most strict culpability.

shannys a numpty, what’s with firing gm after a single term 😭 you can’t expect them to get everything done coming off a rebuild in just a 1 term. dubas did more than enough to make this team a powerhouse the “core 4” just doesn’t have the heart or strength to win in playoffs they showed that in every scrum round 2

Dubas is gone. Seems to have overplayed his hand. Shanahan was a warrior class player. After losing a playoff round and publicly whining about how tough the job is and deferring to your wife as the decision maker, that would have had to be the end for Dubas in Shanahan's eyes. Not reading the room and having your agent inflate an ask that already accommodated months of negotiated 'must haves' is, in any business, interpreted as bad faith. Sports is big business but at the end of the day it is just hockey. Anything other than Dubas stating "Tough to stomach the loss but instead, I focus on the awesome organization we have built, which anybody lucky enough to be a part of, knows is 1st class. We have a strong core of character guys who like me, want to win. We make moves to add depth and talent and I believe each year we have gotten better. We will continue to do so and if the leadership of MLSE continues to have faith in me, I am committed to doing anything I can to bring home a Cup to Toronto". #1 priority IMHO is goaltending. The young guy Woll looked good when called upon and might have the secret sauce but Samsonov was often caught out of position and gave up too many weak goals. Move Samsonov. Defense was outmatched with both Florida opponents and the Leafs need their Coffey, Leetch, Lidstrom anchors to transition up ice without turnovers. Emphasis on a combination of speed and nastiness. In terms of trade bait up front I think you need to shake things up. Not necessarily wholesale changes but certainly a blockbuster with at least one of Tavares, Marner or Mathews needing to go. A Losing attitude is a virus that needs to be cut out. Edmonton went all in this year and are also out in the 2nd round to Vegas, so perhaps there is a blockbuster McDavid and or Draissaitl for Mathews and or Marner. An explosive move that could shake up both rosters. Another move is Mathews and Samsonov for the #1 pick with Chicago. Do something bold to grab a potential generational talent and clear cap space. Is a coaching change warranted? Perhaps. Keep in mind NHL coaches earn their chops through experience and just blowing the coach out does not change a losing culture. A change could be positive and candidly now more likely but only if a world class guy is ready to step in. Joel Quenneville comes to mind. He took a bullet for what happened in Chicago but is a proven winner. Now it gets interesting because Stan Bowman, who won 3 Cups in Chicago (with Quenneville a former Leaf) could come in as a package deal. Shanahan with his relationships with the NHL HO could smooth things over for re-reinstatement for both. Thoughts? 1

Golden - you are a man's man - that is the way you handle that press conference . As far as Stan Bowman and Joel Q - don't hold your breath - JQ was not a fan. And Bowman was not GM for 3 cups - that team was built by Dale Tallon, Stan Bowman was assist GM, for the first one - right after the first cup they lost Dustin Byfuglein because paperwork was not filed in time - Tallon ended up getting fired and it was always considered that maybe Stan Bowman had orchestrated it for the opportunity. He did retool /tweak to win the other two but it was never thought he and Q got along real well. And he fired Quennville the season before he got fired. I have heard JQ is interested in the job and I think he is the type of guy that can get that team to the next level but I would not see Stan Bowman as GM - but it would not surprise me if Scotty calls Shanahan.
