SPOILER ALERT About the ending: in the movie, it is shown that the fishman has *healing* powers. He heals people's wounds and even cures baldness. But there isn't a single instance where he makes humans grow fish parts or change species. He's just shown to have healing powers. Meanwhile, the protagonist was found by a *river* as a baby. And she had what people thought to be wounds around her throat which probably were stitched shut and eventually scarred. Then at the end of the movie, what do you see? You see that the fishman used his *healing* powers on her. And it turns out that she had gills all along, and could breathe underwater like him. Human doctors just fucked up her gills. She was mute because she was a water creature - like the fishman. This is based on what is said and shown throughout the film. It's possible that she's simply a water creature that looks more human than him.

I think you TOTALLY missed the fact that the female lead was found “near the river” as a baby. Her last name is Spanish. I thought that she was of the same KIND as the monster. She had a different relationship with water, as shown in her morning habits. Her scars were ALWAYS gills.

Also, when she's on the bus, when she moves her fingers.....the raindrops follow. She has powers and can control water. And Zelda explained that the nuns found her by the river, already with the cuts. They just assumed she was attacked. There was no hard evidence for that. Yet another clue that she's one. Ooh, and I just remembered that the scientist who studied the asset, said the asset had two different ways of breathing. He said the gills were for underwater, but that there was also a trachea and lungs, so there was a possibility for breathing oxygen. Maybe Elisa had the same thing but since she was raised on land, the gills were not needed and she used the trachea. But the possibility was always there.

Jillian Rachael the raindrop thing was a transition more than anything, the fishman has healing not water manipulation.
@Orion_TheyThem
@Orion_TheyThem 6 жыл бұрын
carlos conde your argument makes no sense. Transition or not, it doesn't negate the fact that the water droplets followed her fingers. Plus she knew Exactly when the rains would come. Also, we don't know what all this creature can or cannot do, as we see that he is god-like. He was worshipped as a Deity by a tribe in Brazil. I doubt they'd worship him just because he can heal. He'd be a much more useful Deity if he could control water/weather to bring good crop seasons, etc. But assuming he can just heal.......it doesn't make sense to limit the ability/abilities of another god(dess)-like creature. Who knows what Elisa is capable of? We don't, because she was raised as a human. Controlling water/weather may be her power and healing may be his. Again, I'll throw out the most damning evidence: that the undercover Soviet Doctor said that the creature had the capacity to breathe oxygen (he had a set of lungs and a trachea). But that he also had gills and was how he could breathe underwater.

Elisa is a creature just like the Asset and here are the clues to why: 1. Zelda said she was found as a baby next to a river 2. She has had those “scars” her whole life. She just never realized they were gills. 3. She’s mute just like the Asset is. 4. Every morning, she took a bath. She loved being in water. Not only that, but it sexually aroused her, that’s why she masturbated on the daily in the water. 5. She was initially attracted to the Asset. Most people would fear something like him. It’s possible she just took a human form because she was raised as a human. Kinda like the concept of how Loki was an Ice Giant but he looked like an Asgardian since he was raised by them.

My thoughts exactly. The creature can heal and give a balding old man some hair. But giving a 100% human some gills and a complet set of organs for abstracting oxygen out of water? No. My guts tell me she is more like a hybride, "missing link". Maybe a child of another "seaman" and a human. Maybe he is some evolutionary remnant, last of his kind. Maybe her gene pool was evolving too. Maybe she is the first of her kind, evolving into him. It would explain a) why she is mute, just like him b) why she has those perfectly symmetrical "scars" left & right. Coincidentally where one would have gills. He brought her back from death, yes. But he merely triggered her gills. Not "installed" them. And they live on happily ever after.

Says who sirens are depicted in mythology as three different variations as far as I am aware none of which support that claim that they cant talk. If anything sirens can or at least the fish variation can based on the myth titled the oddessey of which in one portion of it sirens are singing trying to lure a boat and its crew to their deaths. It doesnt say what kind of singing only that the song is considered pleasant and enticing to men.

you could argue that the movie is about how sometimes humanity is more monstrous than the monsters in these movies, the monster treated humans with respect if they treated him with respect, but would defend itself when attacked, like most people. the person who thought he was the hero though turned out to be the real monster.

I feel that Elisa was a mermaid of some sort so this is not really an interspecies love story. She was found near water as a baby and she had those 'gills' all along. She also had the ability to manipulate water as seen when she was on the bus and moving the droplets of rain water on the window with her finger tips. She also couldn't speak just like the little mermaid. So when fishman healed her, he also healed her gills so she could breath again.

I feel like Strickland's character gets under analyzed. He is a man driven by ambition yes, but more so out of fear. There's a brief scene with his superior officer when recapturing the specimen isn't going well and he basically asks "surely if a man gives his life in service to his country and has always come through before, surely one failure is forgivable." His superior officer tells him it isn't forgivable and that his only value is in being perpetually successful. It's actually a really sad scene and gives insight into Strickland's character. He bought into the idea that he and people like him are at the top of the food chain and he will be rewarded for reinforcing that social structure, but will be punished unmercifully if he fails or deviates from that narrative in any way. All of his shitty behavior towards other characters boils down to this need to control everything and everyone around him because he's terrified of not being successful - the only thing that gives him worth. The other white male character was the Russian doctor who helps to free the creature. Both white male characters die in the end, but the one that learns to disobey orders dies a more noble death while the other dies at the hands of the creature he thought was his inferior.
@ZeroHero3d
@ZeroHero3d 5 жыл бұрын
Pfffft. Nah, that's way to nuanced and understanding of his character. Let's just reduce him to nothing more than a white male so his entire person is invalidated and his actions are dictated by his skin colour and genitals. Throw in some digs at the MAGA crowd and call it a day. 🙄

he doesnt "believe," he is right, just look at how homeless men get less to no help compared to homeless women, and using the sjw narrative is also wrong because feminists are known for closing male shelters, even the merman is shown to have useful powers because otherwise he would be a dead weight to carry around men are objectified as much as women but the problem is not that, the problem is to pretend its not the case because all men are ok with them proving their worth

He seemed to have daddy issues. He spoke to the general as if he was talking to an absurdly overtly strict, old school dad. He was always trying to gain the approval of his superior. After the river demigod was freed from the facility and taken to Elisa's place Strickland kind of regressed into a childish mindset (the way he whined and protested was very unprofessional) when addressing the general as he was scolding him and "putting him back line". And he kept eating candy out of anxiety. Which was probably a habit that was looked down on by his real father, and probably by his mum. Strickland was like the epitome of toxic masculinity. Raised in an era of child neglect by authoritarian parents. He probably came from an uneducated working class patriotic background because he had a chip on his shoulder for not being well read or sophisticated. He knew a bit of the biology applicable to the river demigod but he didn't have credentials or further scientific knowledge or interest. The way he froze when his son kissed his cheek before going to school makes it seem like he was trying not to be as terrible as his own dad, at least regarding his children. His dad probably beat out of him any semblance of emotional sensitivity or any physical affectionate contact between father and son such as hugs and kisses on the forehead or the cheek because it could have been linked to homosexuality at the time (until very recently there was a considerable amount of families that followed that mindset in the anglosaxon - germanic world, nowadays it's somewhat of a minority). Also, on the first watch I thought he also had mommy issues because the way his wife told him to go wash his hands before having sex was authoritarian in a 1950s gendered way. Since the home was women's territory. It creeped me out because she adopted an old school motherly authority in her voice. I thought they were gonna get kinky because of how she put his hand on her breast while "sweetly" ordering him to wash his hands. That he was gonna be submissive in bed. Turns out his sudden "kink" was to cover his wife's mouth with his rotten hand while thinking of Elisa and emotionally cheat on his wife before actually trying to sexually assault Elisa. Strickland was so gross. Also, not washing his hands unless he was about to or had just finished having sex unless his masculinity would be questioned by himself, was quite the random disgusting rule. And one the things they chose to stablish his character, along with the racism; ableism; insensitive comments; lack of courtesy towards anyone that is not a white, conventionally attractive, able bodied, white woman; the blood on his stun baton, and general misogyny. Truly, the average white man of his era.

She cant speak, he cant speak too :D 4. And later on that scene where shes on the bus messing with window. The rain drops move along with her fingertips. Normal ppl cant do that :))) 5. She seems sooo comfortable being in water (the opening bathroom scene) like she belongs there. 6. Ehhh, im sure theres more evidence to this :)))))) Sooooo yah, the chick is already a mermaid, by bring her to the water, he actived something in her.

2 points: 1. It's not that her scars are changed into gills - they were gills all along - she's a mermaid raised as a human and didn't know otherwise. Early in the movie it was mentioned that she (as a baby) was found by a river. She baths every morning and is shown to have an affinity for water. 2. The merman is not the monster - never was - Strickland is the monster and he dies at the end like in all the monsters in all the other monster movies. In this story the outsiders are the protagonists. As soon as you understand who the protagonist romantic couple is - it's basically a typical monster movie. ;-)

The idea of a "monster" as always been to relay a combination of our fear of the unknown, our intolerance towards even very minor differences and our refusal to accept that evil comes from inside us, human beings, not from a non-human creature. Which is why medias portraying a so-called "monster" that ultimately proves to not be so different from us after all is so genius and enlightening.

I think it is possible that the mute woman was once a creature like the "monster." Taken at a very young age her gills eventually turned into scars and her body adapted to the out-of-water environment. Her history is a complete mystery and so that adds some credence to my speculation. When she finds the monster she finds a kindred spirit -- she is able to communicate naturally with it because she and the monster are really of the same species.

On Giles, I came away with the impression that the ad exec he met twice was a man he had a relationship with at some point. A gay man who wanted to remain closeted and didn't want Giles around out of fear of being discovered. Nothing overt, but subtleties in both of their performances let me to think this.

I prefer to believe that the scars were always gills. Otherwise the movie would be dumber than it already is. There's no justification for scars like that. Whereas if she was a sea person that had been discovered as a baby, that would explain her affinity for water, her attraction to the Sea Monkey King, and her muteness.

I haven't seen the movie but wouldn't that one scientist guy or the gay guy count as Good White guys? I agree it feels abit too stacked against just regular white guys, especially the way the reviewer said it. It might have been better to have a more classically good hero guy as well standing against the evil one. I'm not much of a writer so I don't know if what I am saying makes much sense or could even work so. Yeah it could be more fair but I still think its a good movie overall and altogether not saying anything too bad. Its flipping the usual monster movie tropes and I kind of like that sometimes.

I doubt that would happen in our lifetime. The white guy main character who saves the world is still the main trope that everyone has to absorb. But if it does happen, then maybe you can experience the point of view of a minority. It can't be so terrible if you think they should have to deal with that in order for the white main character, hero complex to live on right?

Wow! All I can say is wow!! I fell in love with the movie The shape of water, right from the trailer. One of my all-time favorite from Del Toro. It was just such a touching, eccentric, beautiful unexpected, love story. An animazing, beautifully written and directed movie with yes! A political message behind it. To fit or to not fit in this society. Can't wait for his next film. Kudos Mr. Del Toro, you are one of my favorite directors! You choose the perfect cast of actors, and I for one believe deserve many many more Awards, on your exceptional films! A haunting fairytale that was a combination that reminded me of the movies Shrek, Beauty & the Beast, Creature from the Black Lagoon, with a little Twilight.
